'Desperate' police appeal for help after 4-year-old killed in Albuquerque road rage incident

October 21, 2015

Albuquerque police issued a "desperate" appeal for witnesses Wednesday after a cold-blooded shooter drove up alongside a car in early rush hour traffic and opened fire, killing a 4-year-old girl as her horrified parents watched in an apparent case of road rage.

“We are in desperate need of info to help us resolve the conflicting information we’re getting right now," Police Chief Gordon Eden said. "We’re begging for the community’s help.”

The killer was going west on Interstate 40 within city limits and pulled up alongside the car the unidentified child was riding in and opened fire around 3 p.m., shooting the child in the head. The child's heartbroken father told police it was a case of road rage.

[...]

"We have absolutely no suspect information at this time," Drobik added, echoing Eden's plaintive appeal. "We need the community's help. You had to have seen something. Please call us."

The child's parents, who were both in the car, were apparently unable to identify the assailant, and police initially received conflicting details about the gunman's vehicle, including its color and even whether it had two or four doors. A red pickup truck which appeared to have a bullet hole in the rear window was seen pulled over on the interstate, which was shut down, but police would not confirm it was involved.

A woman who said she was on the road at the time of the incident told KOB-TV she saw a red truck driving erratically on I-40, and believes she saw the early stages of the tragic incident.

"We were actually behind the two vehicles that were in the middle of the road rage incident: red truck, red sedan," Jonelle Tafoya told the station. "The red truck was not allowing the red car to pass [and] kept swerving from lane to lane to keep the vehicle behind them."

Tafoya said she exited the highway out of fear something bad would happen

[...]

"I got the notification that something had occurred on my phone that a child had been shot in the head at Unser and I-40, and all I could think was, 'Oh my God. That was it exactly. That was probably the road rage incident we had seen.'"

The girl's father pulled over after the incident, and a Bernalillo County Sheriff's deputy arrived on the scene to find the child inside, Drobik said. The girl was rushed to University of New Mexico Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

[...]

The shooting comes after a road-rage shooting last month in Albuquerque in which police say a man fired at another driver in self-defense. The Sept. 9 shooting that wounded 34-year-old Jacoby Johnson was being reviewed by the District Attorney's Office. A month earlier, a driver used a camera to record another motorist brandishing a gun at him on I-25 in Albuquerque, resulting in felony charges for the suspect.

Something feels off with this one. Off as in there is more to it than people are telling.

I felt that when I heard it on the news this morning and I can't shake the feeling every time I see an article on it.

Hmmmm, interesting. I didn't get that vibe, but it'll be interesting to see what unfolds. I feel so terrible for the parents. To lose your child in such a senseless way, all due to some freak getting pissed that you want to pass. Humanity is devolving at an alarming rate. I hope they catch the SOB(s) asap!

No matter what the parents were involved in, the child didn't deserve this. And, I think the child may well have been the only innocent in this.

I am wondering why only the little girl was shot, I would have thrown myself on top of my baby.
Shooting at moving car from moving car while driving and swerving, doubt he aimed at the child, just pointed toward the car and shot.

After reading the full article, I'd like to know how police received so detailed a description of the shooter yet claim there were conflicting descriptions of the car, including its color.

I, too, felt there was something "off" at first reading...

If it was not road rage maybe it was over drugs, the article didnt say if they found out who the truck belonged to that was pulled over with no one inside.

Police detained a man on Wednesday in connection with the road-rage killing of a 4-year-old girl who was shot in the backseat of her father's truck after he picked up her and her brother from school, signaling a possible break in a case that has horrified the public.

Albuquerque police would not say if they believe the person of interest taken into custody is the shooter, but they said he matched the description of the gunman. His name was not immediately released.

Authorities quickly began pressing for tips, offering roughly $25,000 for information that leads to the arrest of the shooter, who was driving a newer-model maroon or dark red Toyota Corolla or Camry with a spoiler on the trunk and dark tinted windows. The car also had a University of New Mexico license plate.

Details about a suspect, described as in his mid-20s or early 30s, emerged after police investigated more than a dozen leads, Eden said.

Albuquerque officers "have not stopped or slept," the police chief said. "Every officer in law enforcement in New Mexico is currently looking for the vehicle I described."

Albuquerque police say the person of interest taken into custody near the shooting site matches the description of a man with short dark hair, a thin face and goatee.

Police are seeking a warrant to search an Albuquerque home and a car as part of their investigation, Officer Tanner Tixier said.

The person of interest was detained not long after police issued a public appeal for help to identify and find a suspect in the shooting.

It's not clear what led the incident to escalate, but the father told officers the shooting was the result of road rage.

The parents put up a go fund me and at this time they are around 55,000 .

I think this is why the dad is not wanting to say to much...
I read through some of the comments and a few of them are blaming the dad as the aggressor.. He kept blocking the guy and wouldn't allow for him to pass..

I think he probably was a total ass and stupid as hell for getting into a road rage altercation with kids in the car...BUT I don't blame him for the death of his child ..that title goes to the pos who pulled out a gun and murdered the lil girl ..he is solely responsible for her death..

The one that pulled out the gun is responsible for her death, but if the dad created the situation, I only feel for the little girl and the wife. I do blame him for irresponsibly placing his daughter and wife's life at risk

The guy confessed... so glad they have him! Apparently an anonymous caller tipped them off.

Police: Man confesses to I-40 road rage shooting

A man has confessed to shooting and killing a 4-year-old girl during a road rage incident earlier this week, according to police.

A person of interest was detained around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday [...]

Tony Torrez, 32, confessed to the killing and has been arrested [...]

Torrez has been charged with an open count of murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, assault with the intent to commit a violent felony, shooting at or from a motor vehicle, child abuse, child abuse resulting in death and tampering with evidence.

Torrez's bond has been set at $650,000 cash only.

[...]

“Some type of incident happened. It’s unclear what that incident was other than the fact that it was road rage resulting in murder,” APD Chief Gorden Eden said.

[...]

Police say the person of interest matched the description authorities had released earlier.

He was found in a green and blue vehicle, not the vehicle believed to have been involved in the road rage incident.

[...]

Investigators said the girl was riding [...] on I-40 around 3 p.m. Lilly's father had just picked her and her 7-year-old brother up from school.

For some reason, someone pulled up and started shooting. One of the bullets hit the little girl in the head.

Both children were sitting in the back seat.

“From what we understand, the cars were both moving. One car pulled up next to the other car and started firing rounds into that vehicle,” Officer Simon Drobik said.

The family pulled to the side of the road until help could arrive. An off-duty Bernalillo County deputy and a few nurses spotted the family in distress and stopped to render aid.

[...]

Medics rushed the girl to University of New Mexico Hospital, but she didn’t make it.

Police investigators said this case has touched them to their core [...]

Police do not believe the family knew the shooter. They’re calling it a road rage case.

[...] police say they got Torrez's name from an anonymous caller. It's unclear what will happen with the reward offers.
The child killed has been identified by her family as Illiana Rose Rael Garcia. She goes by Lilly.

I was editing too long to notice you two (@Forensicwx and @CLouise) had beaten me to the update. Oops. Oh well, I've got some extra links/pics in my post for those interested.

I had to laugh at this Pete because in my original draft I'd said that I get the vibe he's an illegal and likely one with a prolific record of offenses, then mentioned that you'd probably like to chime in on the topic, but unfortunately I edited it all out for brevity.

Of course they did.

Nothing like putting your wallet before everything else. I'm sorry but if someone shot my child I wouldn't give even half a fuck about my pocketbook, I'd be telling everything and anything to the police theat could help the investigation.

Make no mistake, there is exactly 1 innocent victim in this and that's Lily and the shooter needs a bullet himselfd maybe the shooter was just a giant asshole but it's equally as probable that the father of the victim was being an asshole on the road too and that two idiot with more testosterone than brain set the tragic chain of events into motion.

I'm gonna refrain from passing much judgement until more details emerge, but I do agree that opening a fundraising page the same day your child is killed is pretty weird (unless maybe it was set up by extended family or a friend). I think I would be going thru such paralyzing grief and utter insanity that financial concerns wouldn't even cross my mind. Though they do say everyone grieves differently. Maybe one or both of them are in severe shock or denial, or perhaps they have that "handle what we must now, grieve later" attitude. I don't personally get it, but I guess it's technically possible.

If it was set up by a friend or something then I will retract my venom, absolutely.

And I do know that people process grief differently but your daughter, your 4 year old daughter was just murdered and you're basically begging for money. No. Just no. The thought of setting that up shouldn't enter into your brian, I don't care if people process gried differently, it's just wrong.

Again, doesn't apply if they didn't set it up.

@Krystal and @amac,

I don't know who set the fund up, but I do know how expensive it is to bury someone.
I also know the second someone dies the cost starts racking up. Other than cremation (which isnt free either) and keeping the ashes, there is no cheap way to go.
If this was my little girl, I would want her to at least have a proper burial, there will be no 16th birthday party. There will be no wedding in her future.
More than likely, someone asked the family to choose a funeral home and the parents called to discuss details.
Funeral homes talk money on the first phone call. Its a business and they want to know right away if you're buying a $3,000.00 dollar casket (which is low end) or a $500.00 dollar urn. $$$ will they be preparing the body for viewing or cremation.
Just to pick up the body and put it in their freezer cost several hundred dollars.

But most will work with you.

When my grandmother passed, they let us plan the funeral to her specifications and have it, then worry about the money.

I know it's expensive but most funeral homes will work with you on payments and in a case like this that has gotten national if not international attentio there is a chance that everything could end up donated. Funeral homes are a business and it looks really good in the eyes of the public to help a family like this one, the owners know that.
