Two parents are behind bars after the death of their 4-month-old infant, officials say.

According to Sheriff Lee Foster, Brady Lynden Wearn, 18, and Mary Catherine Bedenbaugh, 17, both of Prosperity were arrested for homicide by child abuse and unlawful conduct toward a child.

Deputies say EMS and Rescue responded on May 2 for a 4-month-old not breathing and unresponsive.
The infant was taken to Newberry Hospital and was pronounced dead.

Officials say toxicology reports during the investigation showed the infant had measurable levels of cocaine in the body. Further toxicology tests yielded amounts of cocaine in the feeding bottles. As a result of the investigation, officials say both parents submitted to a drug screen, which tested positive for cocaine, fentanyl and marijuana.

Newberry County Coroner Laura Kneece ruled the manner of the infant’s death a homicide.

Officials say the infant died due to, “sudden unexpected infant death associated with recent cocaine ingestion.”

was the baby born addicted? were they medicating him so he would sleep while they were high? so many questions but grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr drugs and kids don't mix... when will people ever learn grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr... how many more dead and or abuse kids will it take? grrrrrrrrrrrrr poor beautiful baby :(

I became a mom at 15 years old, I remember, the moment I saw my daughter (for the first time), something just clicked, this ridiculously exaggerated, incredible love for her, I was hooked and I would never allow for anything or anyone to hurt her, let alone right before my eyes…

I’m so sorry Baby Jasper, you deserved better.

So sad :( they should definitely be arrested and charged but I'm not sure if I necessarily agree with the homicide assessment.

Diagnosis was basically SIDS "associated with recent cocaine ingestion." So the babe didn't die of acute cocaine toxicity. If the amounts were trace, they honestly have no way of knowing whether or not it contributed to the child's death. Without a thorough analysis of the sleep environment and toxicity levels, how can we know?

Obviously these parents are deadbeats and should be punished for child endangerment and neglect. But SIDS is such a crapshoot with a bunch of different risk factors. Formula feeding and smoking are risk factors. Courts should be wary of setting a precedent that could see devastated parents charged any time a child dies of SIDS.

Well I am 44 and never had kids, but glad at 15 you were knowledgeable enough not to give your baby cocaine. Hopefully all your children or your child is doing great.
