Colombian President Gustavo Petro said Friday that authorities found alive four children who survived a small plane crash 40 days ago and had been the subject of an intense search in the Amazon jungle that held Colombians on edge.

The children were alone when searchers found them and are now receiving medical attention, Petro told reporters upon his return to Bogota from Cuba, where he signed a cease-fire agreement with representatives of the National Liberation Army rebel group.

The president said the youngsters are an “example of survival” and predicted their saga “will remain in history.”

The crash happened in the early hours of May 1, when the Cessna single-engine propeller plane with six passengers and a pilot declared an emergency due to an engine failure.

The small aircraft fell off radar a short time later and a frantic search for survivors began.

The three adults were killed, and their bodies were found in the area.

Mom of miracle Amazon kids survived crash for 4 days but told them to leave her to save themselves

The mother of four young kids who navigated the Amazon jungle for weeks after a plane crash survived the air accident, too — but was badly wounded and selflessly urged them to leave her to save themselves.

“My daughter has told me that their mother was alive for four days,” the children’s father, Manuel Ranoque, said to reporters, according to the Guardian on Sunday.

But the mom, Magdalena Mucutuy, knew her days were numbered and that the kids’ chances of survival were better if they left the wreckage to look for food, water and help.

“Before she died, she said to them, ‘Maybe you should go. You guys are going to see the kind of man your dad is, and he’s going to show you the same kind of great love that I have shown you,’ ” Ranoque said.

The youngsters — ages 13, 9, 4 and 11 months — eventually left, sparking what ended up being an epic, 40-day, miraculous journey of survival that included them living off a bag of cassava flour from the wreckage and seeds and fruit they found in the area after the May 1 crash in Colombia that killed their mother and two other adults.

Colombian children who survived five weeks in jungle released from hospital

Four Colombian Indigenous children who survived a plane crash in the country’s Amazon region and lived for more than five weeks in the jungle have been released from hospital after a 34-day stay, the government said on Friday.

The children, aged 1 through 13, survived the May 1 crash that killed their mother and two other adults and were found last month.

The indigenous children’s knowledge of the jungle, as well as the eldest sister’s courage, have been credited by officials with saving their lives.

“They have recovered size and weight, really they are very well,” Astrid Caceres, the director of the country’s child welfare institute, told journalists.

“The second phase of caring and protecting them begins.”
