EMORY, Texas — Firefighters and deputies discovered three people dead, including two children, while checking reports of a burning house and the sound of gunfire in a remote, rural area in East Texas on Saturday.

Another adult was hospitalized after the incident reported about 4 a.m. Saturday, Rains County Chief Deputy Kurt Fischer said. Two people were taken into custody relative the the incident, Fischer said.

He and other law enforcement officials declined to release any other information pending a news conference later Saturday. Deputies used a fire truck Saturday afternoon to stop all traffic a mile from the crime scene on the lone, one-lane road into the area.

The scene is located about five miles southeast of Emory. The county seat of Rains County is 60 miles east of Dallas.

Four people, including three high school students and one juvenile, were
arrested hours later in this rural town and will be charged with three
counts of capital murder each, Rains County Sheriff David Traylor said.

Tightlipped authorities provided little details, refusing to release any
names or what motivated the shootings and fire. Two boys, ages 8 and 13, and
a 39-year-old woman were found dead inside the home.

The father was in critical but stable condition at a nearby hospital,
Traylor said.

Teen Romance Suspected in 3 Texas Deaths

A family's opposition to a teenage daughter's romance is suspected of leading to a fiery attack that left the girl's mother and brothers dead and her father critically wounded, investigators said Sunday.

Four suspects, including the 16-year-old daughter, remained in custody on capitol murder charges Sunday, a day after the pre-dawn attack on the rural East Texas home of Terry and Penny Caffey.

Terry Caffey, who was shot in the head, was able to crawl about 300 yards to a neighbor's house to seek help, while flames consumed his home with his wife and two young sons inside, the Rains County Sheriff's Department said. Penny Caffey, 37; Tyler Caffey, 8; and Mathew Caffey 13, had been shot and stabbed multiple times, according to the statement.

Thanks for the update MorningStar.

I hope she gets tried as an adult and stays in prison forever. Bah....

I updated this with a link on the front page. Both Charlies took a plea deal, for testifying against the girls both will serve life without parole. I'm OK with that.

Wow, dark, sad shit. An entire family almost gone over stupid high school theatrics...

Wait until this penis of Erin's decides he wants another cheerleader of the week...family life will look far more appealing.. no mama's shoulder to cry on, no little brother's who would someday defend her honor. No, instead, a penis that will leave her no doubt and a father that will never forgive her....of course, I'm assuming she's guilty of these brutal murders and it sure as fuck looks that way.

Rest in peace Matthew, Tyler & Penny.

Co-defendant Bobbi Gale Johnson, named in the affidavit as an accomplice who did not use a weapon, was sentenced to 40 years in prison and may be eligible for parole in 20 years.

In November, Wilkinson and Waid avoided the death penalty by pleading guilty for their involvement in the killings. McDowell said both will most likely receive life sentences with parole.

A teenage girl charged with capital murder for her role in the deaths of her mother and two young brothers agreed to a plea deal that could make her eligible for parole when she's 59, her attorney said.

Erin Caffey, 17, accepted the agreement Friday, said defense attorney William McDowell. She had been scheduled to be tried as an adult next month in Hopkins County.

"I think it was a just sentence," McDowell said. "Everyone is pleased with it."

Authorities said Caffey, her boyfriend and two other co-defendants plotted to kill Caffey's parents because they didn't approve of her boyfriend. Caffey was 16 at the time of the crime.

Police reports said she and Bobbi Gale Johnson waited in a car down the road from Caffey's home in Alba while boyfriend Charlie James Wilkinson, 19, and Charles Allen Waid, 20, went on a shooting and stabbing rampage before setting fire to the house.

Penny Caffey, 37, and her sons Mathew, 13, and Tyler, 8, died in the attack in March. Terry Caffey, 41, was shot five times but escaped from the burning house, saying he recognized Wilkinson shooting him and his wife in their bed, sheriff's officials said.

Caffey has since recovered from his gunshot wounds.

All four defendants were initially charged with three counts of capital murder. Prosecutors had said they didn't plan to seek the death penalty against Erin Caffey.

Wilkinson and Waid also avoided the death penalty in November by pleading guilty for their involvement in the killings. McDowell said both would likely receive life sentences with parole.

Johnson, named as an accomplice who did not use a weapon, was sentenced to 40 years in prison and may be eligible for parole in 20 years, the Tyler Morning Telegraph reported Saturday.

Alba is about 60 miles northeast of Dallas.

Co-defendants in Rains County Murders Sentenced

EMORY—The final hearing in the Caffey murders concluded Tuesday in the Rains County courtroom when co-defendants Charles Allen Waid, 20, and Charlie James Wilkinson, 19, were each sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The two, along with Erin Caffey, 17, and Bobbie Johnson all pleaded guilty to the murders of Ms. Caffey’s mother and two brothers.

Ms. Caffey, 17, received two life sentences and an additional 25 years Friday for her role in the murders. She may be eligible for parole at age 59. Ms. Johnson was sentenced to 40 years in prison and may be eligible for parole in 20 years.

Penny Caffey, 37, a church pianist, and sons Mathew, 13, and Tyler, 8, were shot and stabbed to death before their home was burned down.

Ms. Caffey's father, Terry Caffey, 41, was shot five times but got out of the burning house and reached his neighbors. Still conscious, he told them he recognized Wilkinson shooting him and his wife in their bed, sheriff's officials said. He has since recovered from his gunshot wounds.

Officials believe the murders occurred because, the night before the incident, Wilkinson was forbidden to date the then-16-year-old Caffey.

New TV series to center on murder of East Texas family
RAINS COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - It was a horrific triple murder that tore an East Texas town apart and is still making national headlines.
In March of 2008, the Caffey family of Emory was attacked early in the morning in their own home. Their daughter is at the center of the murder plot.
A new TV show will chronicle the case and pour through details of the investigation. It will air on ABC Tuesday night.
Residents and former neighbors of the Caffeys say they will never forget the tragedy.
"People don't talk about it much," said Debby Landers of Emory.
But, it is certain no one around Emory will ever forget the murders of Penny Caffey, and her two sons.
"I just loved them to death," said a family friend. "It was just like losing one of my kids when I found out about it."
Terry and Penny Caffey were shot in their bedroom. The couple's 13- and 8-year-old sons were shot and stabbed to death.
Terry managed to crawl to a neighbor's home for help, but the rest of the family died. Their home was set on fire, making the investigation even more difficult.
"The victims have been burned and they have been sent to Smith [County] for autopsies," said an investigator.

But, it did not take long for the dark twisted plot to unravel. The Caffey's teenage daughter, Erin, and her boyfriend at the time, Charlie Wilkinson, both pled guilty, as did Charles Waid and Bobbi Johnson.
"His daughter...she's ruined her life, and he's lost his family members," said Landers.
But, Terry remained by his daughter's side through the whole ordeal. Terry has since published a book, detailing the events of that terrifying night. Former neighbor, Thomas Proctor, says nobody saw it coming.
"He was playing with the children the night before it happened," said Proctor. "They had a real good family and I think a lot of it in his book was the shock of what happened."

Though it is not spoken of much anymore, many residents like Debby Landers still can't fathom what would turn the teenagers into cold-blooded killers.
"Why the little boys?" she said. "They did nothing to him."
A beautiful family was lost, one also known for their musical talents.
"They served the Lord," said next door neighbor, Mr. Gaston.
[...]
Terry Caffey speaks out about the murders in a new show debuting Tuesday, September 14th, on ABC. Final Witness will air at 9 p.m.
