The Bakersfield Police Department said on Thursday, October 10, 2024, officers were called to a home in the 300 block of Vernal Place for a report of a two-year-old girl in medical distress.
When officers arrived, officers helped emergency medical personnel with life-saving efforts.

Police said the child was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead. The investigation found that the child suffered traumatic injuries consistent with abuse, according to police.
Detectives arrested 29-year-old Gregory Joseph MacDonald for aggravated child abuse causing death, and 40-year-old Chandy Ann McCarthy for felony child endangerment.

A second child in the home was taken into protective custody.

Gregory MacDonald,
The mother of a 2-year-old girl who died after suffering injuries authorities say were consistent with abuse pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges including murder.
Chandy McCarthy, 40, pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, assault of a child under 8 resulting in death and child cruelty.

Co-defendant Gregory MacDonald, the girl’s stepfather, is scheduled for arraignment Friday on identical charges.
It’s alleged MacDonald inflicted the injuries, and McCarthy knew about the abuse and did nothing to stop it. The girl had extensive bruising on her face, back, stomach and other areas.

The bruises were in various stages of healing, according to a court filing.

MacDonald told detectives he “snapped,” the filing says, adding the injuries were inflicted as he tried to help the child when she experienced medical emergencies.
In March of last year, authorities in Nevada — where the couple previously lived — investigated after bruising was found on the girl and her twin sister, according to the filing. MacDonald again blamed the injuries on medical emergencies, the filing says.
