An 18-year-old man has been arrested in Brooklyn after surveillance video showed him attacking an Orthodox Jewish man with a tree branch on Monday afternoon.
The footage shows the 26-year-old victim, dressed in a black suit and hat, crossing Empire Boulevard at Albany Avenue in the Crown Heights neighborhood when he is confronted by the suspect, identified as Shervy Taylor.
The victim reaches the front door of Stan’s French Cleaners, but before he has a chance to enter the suspect bludgeons him with such force that the stick breaks into three pieces,
Taylor attempted to flee, but three men, including the owner of the dry cleaning business, pursued him on foot and eventually cornered him in Lefferts Park.
Another video obtained by
ABC7 shows the accused attacker lying supine on the ground, surrounded by several bystanders.
When Taylor makes an attempt to get up, someone puts a foot on his chest and pushes him back down.
The 26-year-old victim was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries and later released.
According to police, just hours before the unprovoked assault on the Jewish man, Taylor had been arrested on a petit larceny charge for allegedly stealing orange juice from a local deli, but was quickly released.
