Hope is the thing with feathers.
A 15-year-old boy died after he accidentally shot himself with a gun he and his friends were playing with inside a Long Island home, police said Thursday.

Young Derek Cosme was at a friend’s house in Glen Cove Wednesday night waiting for his mom and aunt to pick him up when the gun went off, wounding Derek, who died a short time later, according to cops.

Officials said the gun’s owner has a legal permit for the firearm. Neighbors said a retired Nassau County corrections officer lives at the home where the tragedy occurred.

Tragedies like this are easily avoidable, and one would think that a retired corrections officer would know how to properly store firearms and ammo separately.
All firearms purchased in the last 20 yrs come with locking devices, or the locks can be purchased cheaply wherever guns/ammo is sold; also full metal gun cabinets with double locks, and separate locked ammo storage areas are readily available - these type storage cabinets utilize 3 different locks: 2 keys are used for the main door, and a separate key for the ammo storage areas.
It's also imperative for all parents, whether gun owners or not, to teach their children/teens that all guns are dangerous, and to never handle a weapon EVER without proper adult supervision.
RULE #1: There is no such thing as an "unloaded gun", every firearm must always be treated as if it is loaded, no exceptions.

So sorry someone so young has lost their life to something so easily preventable. :(
