Ecorse police were called at about 4 a.m. about an unresponsive child at an apartment. When they arrived, they found the child but could not revive him. That was when they found out that the boy's brother also showed signs of abuse.

Police placed the mother in custody and 12 hours later after an extensive manhunt, her live-in boyfriend was also arrested. Both are accused of having some role in these crimes.

For the past three months, twin brothers Zayire and Zion lived with their mother Lisa Reed, and her boyfriend James Gibson at an apartment on 7th Street in Ecorse. "Two very innocent boys, happy loving children," said Ricky Tanner. At 4 a.m., Uncle Ricky Tanner got a horrible phone call.

"To realize what happened in that home to those boys. It angered me and brought me to a level I never thought I would understand."

"This is the worst I've ever seen," said Inspector Timothy Sassak, Ecorse police.

"Most people, injuries, and babies, take them to the hospital," Sassack said.

One-year-old Zayire had been found dead and his brother Zion is fighting for his life.

"Zion right now is struggling," Tanner said.

Zion needs emergency surgery at Detroit Children's Hospital of Michigan.

"A broken hip, a broken nose, bleeding on the brain," Tanner said.

Ecorse police took their mother into custody.

"The live-in boyfriend decided to leave, took the family vehicle, and did not return," Sassack said.

Which then led to a manhunt for the boyfriend, Gibson.

"A coward, a violent coward did that," Tanner said.

Working with the Fugitive Apprehension Task Force, Gibson was found in Sumpter Township. Gibson has a criminal history which includes child abuse. He was just placed on parole for a child abuse case in Traverse City on May 8, during the height of the pandemic and some feel he never should have been released in the first place.

"If you are going to do something like that to a child, what else is he capable of," Tanner said.

The family told FOX 2 that he was hiding out at his uncle's house.

"I want him to know what he did to this family," Tanner said. "I want him to know the suffering."

Ecorse police say both the mother and her boyfriend are both expected to be charged in connection to the abuse while they await the autopsy of the other child.

So much WTF here! First off, Mom was pretty fucked in the head for bedding down with a thug who has a RECORD for CHILD ABUSE of all things and she has 4 children! Is she that goddamn desperate for the D? She approved the "discipline" this piece of shit dished out and and that also makes her a piece of shit!

And they let they asshole out due to Coronavirus! If these masks that they have mandated are so effective, why don't they just have prisoners were masks instead of turning them back onto our streets to commit more violent crime!

One infant is dead and his twin brother is fighting for his life after Ecorse police suspect both were severely beaten.

Several Ecorse police officers are grappling to deal with the level of alleged abuse that appears to have taken place inside a residence at Renaissance Estates of Ecorse.

Inspector Tim Sassak said when officers arrived at the residence one baby, Zyaire, was on the hood of a vehicle unresponsive and the other baby was inside the residence.

He said Zyaire was rushed to Henry Ford Hospital in Wyandotte, and the mother and her live-in boyfriend followed.

While at the hospital, Sassak said a physician explained the nature of the injuries to Zyaire, who was pronounced dead upon arrival. He began questioning the mother and grandmother in an isolation room.

“I got a tap on the shoulder and was told her other child is here now,” the inspector said. “Then the boyfriend hops in the car and takes off.”

Sassak said the baby, Zion, was screaming.

“He wasn’t screaming because he was hungry, he was in pain,” Sassak said. He has the exact same injuries as the other child. That’s too much of a coincidence to ignore.”

Both children had severe injuries to the lips, ears and broken blood vessels in the eyes.

The inspector said Zion has a broken left femur.

“It’s not fractured, it’s broken,” he stressed.

He said Zion also has two broken clavicle bones.

It also has been reported that Zion suffered a broken nose, hip and has some bleeding on the brain.

Police said the injuries to the boys appear to be both old and new.

Zion has since been transferred to Children's Hospital in Detroit.

The mother, who police said was crying and quite emotional over the death of her child, was taken into custody inside the hospital once police learned of the extent of the injuries to the twins.

While some officers went to the hospital, others remained at the residence to investigate.

Sassak said the bedding for the children was bloody and the house was a mess.

An immediate search was launched to locate the mother’s boyfriend.

Police said the mother was the only one who was supposed to be residing at the estates, which is subsidized housing.

This was the most tragic thing. The worst thing that could ever happen. They didn’t deserve this,” said Jennifer Reed, the boys’ aunt.

She says her nephews Zion and Zyaire had just turned 1 years old.

Police have arrested both the mother and her boyfriend. He is the one they believe beat the little ones. We are not releasing their names because they are not yet charged, but we have learned the boyfriend has a long criminal record.

According to the Michigan Department of Corrections, he was in prison for almost the entire maximum sentence of 13 years for carjacking, but he was released a few months early due to COVID-19.

Police say he had an outstanding warrant for another incident of child abuse that happened more than 13 years ago. Reed says the family had no idea he had a history of hurting children.

“He had my family fooled. He put on this birthday party for them. He made them cakes. My aunt was screaming, crying to me last night, about how, Oh Jennifer you should have seen at the birthday party I was thinking to myself, what a great man,” Reed said.

She says her sister has high functioning autism, and when emotional situations happen around her. She has learned to hold her emotions inside. She may not have known how to stop what was happening, but would never purposely hurt her children.

“She has been on suicide watch. I know she is hurting too,” Reed said.

So I guess the family will not hold their piece of shit relative accountable for failing her kids.

These are the kind of women who should be sterilized, men too! If she has high functioning autism and didn’t know how to “stop what was happening “ it would be best for her not to be in the position of having to care for children, obviously she had problems with the older children and their care. She should not have any more child victims!

Yet another person released so they don’t get the sniffles and they end up hurting someone. Give this dickhead walking pneumonia once a month for the rest of his life, which will be spent behind bars. Ridiculous. We need to stop caring so goddamn much about our inmates and worry more about our children

Where did the children live before that?

An Ecorse man has been charged with abusing a 13-month-old boy whose twin brother died of injuries in July.

James Edward Gibson Jr., 34, is charged with first-degree child abuse in connection with injuries suffered by Zion Reed. The boy's mother, Lisa Marie Reed, was previously charged with the same count in his July 28 death.

“There is simply not much that prepares you for the allegations in this case for 13-month-old twin Zion Reed," Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said. "It is important to note that the investigation into the homicide of Zaire Reed is not completed, and we are waiting to receive and review other work that we have requested in this case.”

James Edward Gibson Jr. pleaded guilty in connection to the death of a 13-month-old baby boy, who suffered dozens of broken bones in his short life, and is expected to spend dozens of years in prison.
Gibson pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree child abuse on Oct. 13 in the death of Zyaire Reed, and the abuse of his twin brother, Zion, respectively.

Lisa Reed, the mother of the boys, is facing child abuse charges and has a jury trial scheduled for Aug. 2023.
Retired Ecorse Police Inspector Tim Sassak said this was the worst case of abuse he has worked in his entire career and said it was emotional from the moment they saw Zyaire and his condition.

The retired officer said he received a video chat call and was told the news of the guilty plea and sentencing information.

“It’s good, and it’s some closure for me and others,” Sassak said. “It’s not done yet, but this is a little bit of satisfaction. He’s going to serve every bit of that time, especially since this is his second conviction for child abuse.”
Sassak recalls a day of court testimony in which a police corporal spoke of how he picked Zyaire up and “cradled the baby that wasn’t going to make it” in his arms.
Hearing heartbreaking testimony detailing how orbital bones were broken, including a broken femur, brought out painful emotions in the officers who responded to the call.

It was the grave condition of Zyaire that prompted police to check on his twin brother, and they found him with identical fractures and signs of abuse.

Gibson and Reed were at the hospital with Zyaire when he was brought in, but police said when Gibson realized abuse was suspected, he fled.

Authorities tracked Gibson down and arrested him.

Reed was arrested at the hospital, police said.

Sassak described this case as one difficult to fathom.

“How do you break a baby’s femur,” Sassak said?

At the time of the discovery of the abuse, Sassak was also critical of Reed, saying it’s unimaginable how this could go on for months and she did not intervene.

He said it was a difficult case for those on the front lines, as well as the other officers who had to put their emotions aside and get the legal work done and documented properly.

When Sassak retired, he said he happily did so to become “a full-time professional grandad.”

Nevertheless, he said this case weighed heavily on him, as it did with other officers who are fathers.

“Like one of the officers said, Zyaire had to die to save Zion,” Sassak said, noting one discovery of abuse led to the other. “I consider myself to be a pretty tough guy — tougher than most. But, this kid is like Batman to me. It was six months of a total barrage of abuse, and he survived.”

After news of the abuse and arrests were made public, people were so angered and touched by hearing what the children endured, there were numerous offers to foster and adopt Zion.

Police said he was placed with a family outside of the Downriver area.

“I think about them all the time,” Sassak said.

An Ecorse mother charged with second-degree murder and child abuse in a case that stunned police and the Downriver area will not serve time in prison.
Lisa Reed, 33, was found not guilty after a three-week trial in connection with the July 28, 2020 death of her 13-month old son, Zyaire, and abuse of his twin, Zion.
Reed’s former live-in boyfriend, James Gibson, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree child abuse in a separate trial.

He was sentenced on Jan. 20, 2023, to serve 33 to 60 years in prison.
It was successfully argued in Reed’s case that Gibson was the physical abuser and only did so when Reed was not around.
Gibson, who is not the father of the children, was described as someone who was helpful and supportive when Reed was in her presence.
Court testimony in Gibson’s case revealed that Zyaire’s orbital bones were broken, and he had a broken femur as well.

He had a split lip and numerous facial injuries.
One person who testified and has been quite vocal about the case is retired Ecorse Police Inspector Tim Sassak.

The retired inspector, who was involved with the case from day one, spent three days on the stand recalling the events of that time and how the case was handled.

After the verdict was read, Sassak said he was shocked.
“At the end of the day, it’s a mother’s legal duty to protect her children,” Sassak said. “She didn’t do anything. She had to know. I’m just very disappointed in the jury.”

He went on to say that there were many other people who could have stepped in before things with these children turned tragic.

“I hate to say it, but some women would rather be with a man than be alone,” the retired inspector said. “They will be with him no matter what. She brought a rattle snake into her home and she knew it and overlooked it.”
He was emotional about the case from the beginning, saying this was the worst case of abuse he has worked in his entire career and said it was difficult for other officers as well, noting that many of them have children of their own and they just couldn’t fathom allowing anyone to hurt them.
Calls came to the police department from those concerned about Zion and what was going to happen to him.

There were several calls from people interested in taking him in, including Sassak’s own daughter.

At last report, Zion was out-of-state with relatives and thriving.

I hope this does not lead to her getting Zion back.

From Ecorse Police Inspector Tim Sassak
“I hate to say it, but some women would rather be with a man than be alone,” the retired inspector said. “They will be with him no matter what. She brought a rattle snake into her home and she knew it and overlooked it.” -

He summed it up quite honestly.

I just can’t imagine seeing bruises on my child’s face or other places and not immediately finding out how they got there! IShe had to know the baby was gravely injured and was in danger! I too am shocked by the jury verdict on the mother. I sure hope she doesn’t get him or any other child back into her custody. She may “love” them, but she has proven she won’t protect them.
