According to the criminal complaint from the Magistrate Court of Cabell County, police discovered an unresponsive infant girl at a residence on Aug. 13. The 10-month-old girl was then transported to the hospital where she was later declared dead.

The girl’s mother, 38-year-old Candace Ferrell, was determined to be the last person to see her daughter alive as she was taking care of her at the time. A search warrant executed on the residence found around 37 blue pills stamped with “M30” inside the pack and play where the child was discovered, the complaint said.

An autopsy determined that the child’s cause of death was fentanyl intoxication.

Candace Ferrell, 39, who pleaded guilty to child neglect creating substantial risk of death and attempt to commit a felony in November, was sentenced to up to 13 years in prison.

Ferrell pleaded guilty in November to the August 2024 death of her toddler after officers said about three dozen pills were found inside a pack ‘n’ play where the 10-month-old was found unresponsive.

Court records said an autopsy on the child later ruled the death a result of fentanyl intoxication.

Ferrell was sentenced Monday to 1-10 years for the child neglect charge and 1-3 years for the second charge. Both sentences, which were the maximum, will run consecutively.
Both sentences will begin after Ferrell completes a 3-15 year prison sentence she was already serving in an unrelated case in Logan County. She will also serve 50 years of extended parole.
