Evansville Woman Charged After Six Children Six & Under Left Alone At Home While She Visited Their Sibling In Jail

According to an affidavit, officers were dispatched to an apartment shortly after 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday after a neighbor called and reported that the children in the apartment were left unattended. Officers say they arrived at the scene and located six children at the apartment with no adults supervising them. Authorities say the oldest child present was six-years-old, and the youngest was less than a year old.

An hour after the neighbor called 911 to report the children were not being supervised, officers spoke with the neighbor who called. An affidavit says she told officers that she saw one of the children running around outside of the apartment. The neighbor told authorities that the child said her mother left the children alone “so that means we can do whatever we want.”

Officers say the oldest child told them their mother, Brittany Smith, 29, had left to go visit their older brother in jail. Police say they were able to make contact with Smith by phone at 7 p.m.. Authorities say when officers told Smith they were at her apartment because her children were there alone, she claimed that one of her neighbors was supposed to be watching the children. That neighbor told authorities she was not asked to watch the children on that day, and that she has never watched the children before.

Authorities say the home was clean and there were no safety issues present, however DCS removed the children from Smith’s residence for the time being.

Could be as old as16, if she gave birth at 13... Six that are six and younger left to fend for themselves? Sheer insanity! What kind of rational decision are going to expect a six year old to make if the baby gets injured say? You can't ask that of a bitty that isn't yet CAPABLE of that...

Hell I'm 66 and I wouldn't want to do it. Only if all of us were on a playground with and unlimited amount of snacks and drinks and an 8 foot tall chain link fence around it, and there would still be at least one who would be whining and complaining.

and at least 3 that would need a diaper changed and bums washed, the other 3 need potty breaks but of course not all at once, then sticky fingers to wash, between the bathroom and back to play area and the " i want a drink or a snack" when would have time to relax or them to play lol
