Ricardo Rivera, 30, was charged with first-degree murder after the death of his girlfriend's 2-year-old son on Oct. 20, according to the affidavit of probable cause. Authorities said the child died from blunt force trauma to the head and abdomen, though they did not specify the cause of the trauma.
Authorities said the childhad been under Rivera's care in Paterson during the week leading up to the boy's death. On the morning of Oct. 20, Rivera called 911 and first responders took the boy to St. Joseph's University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
When police searched Rivera's residence on Oct. 20, they allegedly found a large quantity of controlled substances and arrested him, the affidavit of probable cause said. Police said they also found the child's vomit.
According to the affidavit, witnesses who were at Rivera's residence in the 24 hours before the boy's death said the child had been vomiting on the afternoon of Oct. 19, and that Rivera refused to take him to the hospital as his condition worsened. In an interview with police on Tuesday, the boy's mother said she had been in contact with Rivera on Oct. 19, but he stopped answering her calls around 10 p.m. and he didn't tell her that the child was sick, police said.
Rivera was arrested Wednesday and charged with first-degree murder and endangering the welfare of a child.
