Authorities indicted Gilbert Hughes for the murder of a child who died on Feb. 15, 2017, allegedly as a result of injuries they sustained in an abuse case for which Hughes was previously convicted in 2016. Hughes is currently incarcerated at the North Central Correctional Institution in Marion, Ohio on a child endangerment charge.

Ohio law permits an individual tried and convicted of abuse charges to be charged with a homicide offense if the victim of the abuse later dies as a result of the injuries, officials said.

On March 6, 2015, the Wood County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call regarding an unresponsive baby, then three months old. Arriving paramedics found the infant not breathing and with no pulse, but she was revived and stabilized at Wood County Hospital, court documents show.
An emergency room doctor suspected the child’s distress to have been caused by respiratory syncytial virus, for which the child had been admitted to the hospital several weeks before. But a doctor at ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital, to which the girl was transferred, ordered a CT scan to check for brain injury after observing a clear chest x-ray.

That and further examination revealed brain and retinal injuries consistent with shaken-baby syndrome, a state expert testified during Hughes’ trial.
The child, by then known as Shyanne Hughes-Brown, died Feb. 15, 2017 in the Hardin County community of Dunkirk while in a new family’s care.

Shyanne Allie Rose Hughes-Brown, 2 years of age, of Dunkirk Ohio, died in her mother’s arms at her home on Wednesday, February 15, 2017. She was born on November 19, 2014, in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Shyanne is survived by her parents: Tim and Kenna Brown; sisters: Kelsie and Katilynn; a brother: Trenton.
Although her time with us was short Shyanne brought love and joy to countless people whom came to know her as a happy loving child who loved music and being cuddled. Shyanne may be gone from this world but her courage and strength will remain in our hearts until one day when we can be reunited in heaven.
