It is heartbreaking to envision the 5 year old trying his very hardest to help his sibling, scared, lost.

Two school friends of mine were in Foster care and have had wildly successful careers and lives (Many Foster kids go into the military at 18 as their first step, then college, then to their own, safe, happy lives)

"A mother and her boyfriend are facing murder charges after a child’s body was found in a pond in Mississippi.

Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said a resident called his office Friday morning regarding a 5-year-old boy who had come to their front door.

The special-needs child could not share where he was from but with the help of deputies, they were able to locate his mother about an hour later.

Authorities said when they found the boy’s mother, 25-year-old Brooke Mallet, she was with her boyfriend, 22-year-old John Walker, and they were unaware that the child had gone missing.While deputies were speaking with the mother, it was realized that a 3-year-old was also missing from the home. "

"Pace said deputies then began to look for the child, along with officers from the Vicksburg Police Department. Drones were also put into use.

Authorities said during their search they ended up finding the 3-year-old’s body in a pond. First responders administered CPR, but the child was pronounced dead.

According to the sheriff, the child’s mother and boyfriend were arrested and charged with murder. Pace said this does not mean that they deliberately killed the child, but their alleged inactions led to the child’s death.

The 5-year-old boy has since been taken in by child protective services... "

Brooke Mallett, the mother charged with manslaughter and child neglect in the 2023 death of her 3-year-old son, was found guilty on all charges Thursday in Warren County Circuit Court.

Mallett’s charges stem from an April incident last year when both 3-year-old Kaiden Mallett and a five-year-old sibling went missing from their home and, according to law enforcement at the time, were gone for hours without the mother or her boyfriend noticing. Kaiden Mallett was later found dead in a pond near Memory Lane.

Brooke Mallett was sentenced to 30 years in prison, the maximum sentence allowed by law, in the death of her young child in 2023.

Mallett received the maximum of 20 years for manslaughter in the death of her son Kaiden Mallett, and five-year sentences for each of two counts of child neglect.

Mallett was convicted of manslaughter and child neglect June 13 following a trial in Warren County court.

Mallett’s attorney, Alton Peterson, argued for a lesser sentence on the basis that she had no prior arrests or convictions. Mallett’s grandmother, Doreen Bates, asked the court for mercy, stating that Mallett was a good mother and that she loved her granddaughter very much.
