Tavion D. Cobb has been arrested and charged with murder after police say an 18-month-old boy died in his care Tuesday morning.

The child hasn't been publicly identified.

According to an EPD news release, a mother brought her unresponsive 18-month-old son to a local hospital Tuesday morning, triggering a police investigation. Doctors attempted life-saving measures, but the child was pronounced dead at the hospital, Merriss said.
During the subsequent investigation, the mother reportedly told police she had arranged for Cobb to watch her son on Monday — something "he commonly does," the release states. But the following morning, Cobb reportedly told her an "incident" had injured the 18-month-old boy. The release didn't provide any further details.

Police said Cobb returned the child to his mother shortly after this conversation, but by that point, the boy was already unresponsive.

Police say Germia Groves left Nyheim with her boyfriend, Tavion Cobb; a full name she actually hadn’t heard until after he was arrested.

“I didn’t know his last name was Cobb. He told me Barksdale. My son would always run to him and be like ‘dada, dada, dada,’ with no problem, when he’s around me,” she said.

When she got her son back, police say he was unresponsive, his tongue was blue, and he had severe burns on his face, a brain injury, and what looked like a cigarette burn on the back of his leg.

Groves rushed Nyheim to a hospital, where they told her he died.

Police questioned Cobb, and Officer Taylor Merriss says he claimed the child fell off his bike.

“That’s what he said occurred. No details other than that really, and the evidence doesn’t really point to that either,” said Officer Merriss.

Groves had videos of Nyheim looking healthy after Cobb claimed the accident occurred.

He was arrested and charged with murder and two counts of neglect.

Groves says she and her family are left to grieve.

“Now he’s gone, he’s not coming back,” she said. “I just want to know why he did it.”

Ya know, I always feel like I'm an "okay" mom but nothing spectacular. I let them have more screen times than they should. They don't always have the healthiest snack options as we are a bunch of sweet tooths. I let them stay up late with me on weekends and we laze about the house on the weekends. Then I read how lackadaisical these stupid women are letting random men babysit their kids and I feel like mom of the year.
