DePaul Martell Brown, in his early 20s, faces an open murder charge.
Battle Creek police received a call around 5:30 p.m. Thursday from the child's babysitter who said Jaleah Boyd was unresponsive at the child's parents' apartment in the 900 block of North Avenue.
The babysitter was watching Jaleah and Jaleah's three siblings, ages 7, 5 and 3. Jaleah's parents were not there when police arrived, as they were visiting friends at the time.
An ambulance crew arrived at the scene but could not revive Jaleah.
Battle Creek Police Sgt. Jim Martens told 24 Hour News 8 Jaleah had elaborate bruising around her neck. Autopsy results are pending.
Jaleah's mother, the babysitter and Brown were later interviewed at the scene Thursday night. The investigation later showed Brown was allegedly connected to the death. He was taken into custody. He is scheduled for arraignment on Saturday.

Brown's criminal background contains a May 2007 case in in juvenile court in Calhoun County for assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer and malicious destruction of a building $200 or less.
In December 2007, he pleaded guilty to assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer in Calhoun County Circuit Court. He wasn't sentenced in this case until 2010, at which point he received 14 to 24 months in prison.
In August 2008, he pleaded no contest in Calhoun County Circuit Court to two counts of felony assault with a dangerous weapon. He was sentenced in 2010 to 20 months to 48 months, but this sentence was to run concurrent with his other sentences.
He served time in prison from Feb. 26, 2010 to April 13, 2013 when he was "discharged," not paroled.
He has never had a driver's license in Michigan.

Police say Jaleah Boyd was found dead inside an apartment on the 900 block of North Avenue at about 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
A source tells Newschannel 3 the baby's three siblings have been taken from the mother by child protective services. We're also learning the suspect recently got off parole and may soon face charges from what he may have already confessed to.
"He made a statement as to his actions and what occurred in that bedroom again were waiting for physical evidence to come back and see if it fits," said Det. Sgt. Jim Martens, Battle Creek Police.
22-year-old DePaul Brown was polygraphed Thursday night, just hours from when baby Jaleah Boyd was found lifeless on a bed in he back room. Neighbors who did not want to be identified described helping him and a babysitter calling 911.
"We tried to do mouth-to-mouth her lips were cold ice cold here feet were like freezing. There was nothing else we could do, her tongue was white," said an anonymous neighbor.
Investigators believe severe trauma was caused by 22-year-old DePaul Brown before a sibling found her lifeless body in a back room on a bed.
"Somebody strangled her cause there was scratches but it looked like bruises at the same time it was around her neck like something tied around her neck and something was wrong," said an anonymous neighbor.
Brown served prison time and was on parole until April. Police believe something happened long before she was found dead.
Now he could face charges that could send him behind bars for life.
