TAMPA* — A Tampa woman faces an aggravated child abuse charge after, police say, she did not seek medical care for her unconscious toddler for five hours.

Candace Mitchell, 24, of Tampa left her 2-year-old son with her boyfriend for 20 minutes around 5:30 p.m. Friday, according to an arrest affidavit. Upon returning to her home at 5502 N 43rd St., Mitchell found the child unconscious, the report shows.

Her boyfriend told her that the boy fell, the report said. But Mitchell did not seek medical aid for hours although the child never regained consciousness.

Mitchell eventually carried the toddler to Tampa General Hospital, where she was questioned about the nature of the boy's injuries. She told doctors that the child had fallen, the report said.

Suspicious of the assertion, a doctor called police. After questioning Mitchell, police discovered that she had delayed reporting the injuries because of an active child abuse investigation, the report said.

Police arrested Mitchell on a charge of aggravated child abuse, which carries a sentence of up to 30 years in prison. [...]

Christian Love, 2, was brought to the hospital Friday night after his mom, Candace Mitchell, 24, said he had fallen, according to an arrest affidavit.

TAMPA --
A toddler at Tampa General Hospital is 80% brain dead and the boy's prognosis is grim, according to his aunt.

“They say within the next 24-hours they don’t believe he’s going to make it," said Shatirah Love. "He’s getting worse."

The toddler's dad, Messiah Love, 23, said TGH doctors told him that his son's injuries are consistent with blunt force trauma to the head.

“Candace told the doctors that he slipped and fell on the rug and hit his head on the tile floor,â€￾ Love said. “Six doctors have told me that there’s no possible way this kid had fell and hit his head that hard to where the back of his skull was crushed in.â€￾

Mitchell was arrested Sunday night for aggravated child abuse. Tampa police said Mitchell admitted that she left her son with her boyfriend for 20-minutes and when she returned the boy was unconscious. Mitchell said her boyfriend told her that Christian had fallen.

Police said Mitchell told them that she 'did not provide medical aid until nearly 5 hours after the injury even though the child never regained consciousness. The defendant admitted to not calling for medical assistance because of an active child abuse investigation,' according to the report.

Love said he filed a complaint with the Department of Children and Families last week, after he found bruises on his son's body.

"I told her I don’t want to have to give him back because next time I see him he might be hurt or dead," Love said. "A week later, I’m in a hospital

There ya go. Florida. We're nucking futs!
And I dare, DARE some kind of tard loving defender come here to tell us we don't know the whole story. No, we do';t. And neither does Christian BECAUSE HE WAS UNCONSCIOS!

This boy has the sweetest face! Those big brown eyes melt my heart. I do not understand how do you let your unconcious child lay there for 5 hours before seeking help? Because you are scared of CPS? I will never understand why some parents would rather let their child die then have CPS take them away. I guess the time served for murder is more lucrative than child abuse. I just don't get it. I don't know if taking him for treatment sooner would have saved him but it would have given him a better chance. His mother left him no chance. She chose to try to protect her loser boyfriend who obviously was harming her child in the past.

I feel terrible for the father of this boy. He tried to get help for his son and it wasn't enough. I wish he would have kept the boy but we all know that court orders don't care if you suspect abuse and if you don't follow the court order then you end up in trouble and lose your credibility. It's a shitty system in that way.

A Tampa mother accused of waiting nearly five hours to get medical attention for her toddler after he was knocked unconscious made her first appearance in a Hillsborough County courtroom today.

Bond was set at $50,000 for Candace Mitchell, 24, who was arrested Sunday night on a charge of aggravated child abuse after her son, 2-year-old Christian Love, was hospitalized with significant brain injuries.

However, Hillsborough Circuit Judge Walter Heinrich said that if Mitchell makes bond, she will not be released until after 6 p.m. Police are waiting for a condition update on Christian, who is not expected to survive. If the child dies, Mitchell could face more serious charges.

Heinrich also said Mitchell cannot have any contact with Christian.

Toddler in Tampa abuse case dies
Christian Love, the 2-year-old boy at the center of an abuse case in Tampa, died today at Tampa General Hospital, police said.

His mother, Candace Mitchell, 5502 North 43rd St., Apt. 206, was charged Monday with aggravated child abuse for failing to seek medical attention for the child in a timely manner.

The 2-year-old was airlifted Friday to Tampa General Hospital with serious injuries.

Messiah Love, Christian's father, said he heard Sunday that his son suffered a blow to the head.

Mitchell told police she left the toddler with her boyfriend for a few minutes and the child fell off a couch. Police said Mitchell waited about five hours after her son was hurt to seek medical attention.

Mitchell, 24, is being held at a Hillsborough County Jail with bail set at $50,000.

Detectives are investigating the case as a homicide.

The investigation is ongoing.

The boyfriend of 2-year-old Christian Love's mother was charged with aggravated child abuse Tuesday in connection with the toddler's death in May.

Javaurian Safford, 27, of Tampa was the boyfriend of Candace Mitchell, 24, and was caring for the 2-year-old when he suffered serious head injuries, according to a Tampa police report.
[...]

This is Safford's 10th arrest since 2006. The charges range from drug possession to aggravated battery on a pregnant female and cruelty toward a child, according to Florida Department of Law Enforcement records.

In 2008, Safford pleaded guilty to aggravated child abuse charges and was placed on probation and given community service.

Tampa police spokeswoman Janelle McGregor said Wednesday that in the case of 2-year-old Christian, a homicide investigation was still under way to determine "the conditions that caused the child to be injured."

Correction to above post:
Police are still investigating the death of a Tampa toddler who suffered serious head injuries last month.
[...]

Mitchell told police the child was in her boyfriend's care at the time of the injury. That man, Javaurian Saffold, according to an arrest affidavit, has not been charged in connection with Christian's death.

In an unrelated case, Saffold, whose real name is Safford, 27, was charged Wednesday with violating his probation in a separate child abuse case involving a different child.

Correction: An earlier version of this article misstated the charge that Javaurian Safford faces.
