The father of an infant boy who died under what police called suspicious circumstances last week has been charged with capital murder and felony child abuse, Covington police said Wednesday.

Jared Meadows, 25, was arrested Tuesday evening and was being held without bond at the Alleghany Regional Jail.

It's the first capital murder case in Covington or Alleghany County in nearly 10 years.

Commonwealth's Attorney Ed Stein said the basis for the charge is the "willful premeditation" on Meadows' part in the killing of a victim younger than 14 years old by someone 21 or older. Meadows is also charged with child abuse causing serious injury, a felony.

Stein declined to give details of the killing except to say the child had "multiple injuries that were clearly of a nonaccidental nature."

The case originated as a call for help at 9:45 a.m. Sept. 24 with an infant boy who was experiencing difficulty in breathing. Police and rescue crews went to the residence in the 200 block of North Magazine Avenue, and the child was taken to LewisGale Hospital Alleghany and later to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. The baby died there Sept. 26. He was 27 days old.

Court records show Meadows has extensive experience with the criminal justice system, dating to at least 2004, when he was convicted of malicious wounding in Alleghany County and sentenced to a year in jail. That same year, he was also convicted of eluding police and reckless driving in Botetourt County.

The following year, Meadows was convicted of assault and battery, underage possession of alcohol, and three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

In 2008, he was arrested in Alleghany County on a fugitive warrant from Colorado. Later that year, he was convicted of multiple drug abuse charges in El Paso County, Colo.

Earlier this year, Meadows was convicted of petit larceny and obstruction of justice in Alleghany County. He is awaiting trial on charges there of breaking and entering and destruction of property from events that happened in May.

Looking at the albums on the FB page made me cry...what a sweet tiny little man.

RIP Hunter Ryan

What a horrible thing. Poor little didn't even have a chance to live.

I hope this guy's punishment fits the crime, and he doesn't end up with an outrageous sentence like so many cases are ending up lately.

GRRRRRR. GRRRRRRRR. More GRRRRRRRR. I'm just seeing red right now. I hope he gets death. One way or another.

FB page gave me the impression they were more in love with the IDEA of having a baby and a family of their own than the actual baby.

He was a adorable little boy! Babies can frustrate the hell out of you, but how could you purposely hurt one?

Fuck it. Just shoot him.
I hope to the gods no one comes here to defend this scum sucking baby killer.

Most of the young people I have met are more in love with the notion of being parents, then the actual bambino. It's all romantic to have a baby with their mates, just not fun to care for one. Babies are beautiful, but they are a lot of work. If you aren't ready for one, put a damn condon on. My cousin would always say that parties require ballons.

Forget the asshole's face, but I adore the look on little Hunter in this one.

Thanks a lot tmdgirl now that picture brought tears to my eyes. RIP Sweet Baby Hunter

Having a baby/newborn is about as far from romantic as I can imagine. Short of being set on fire, but really, that's even close for the stuff you have to take care of. Poor baby was born of parents who had no clue about babies. No excuse for sperm donor, he deserves to fry. Wrap it up fellas, wrap it up.

Ugh. Just ugh! I have a 4 month old. Babies are fcking harder than I ever thought. And I waited till my 30s to have them. Babies drive you up the wall with their constant screams and demands. But you walk away. It's so simple, take a breather to cool your jets.

I agree with the pp. Definitely more into the idea of having a kid than the reality. I hope Hunter rests in peace. He was a really cute little one :(

How terribly sad.
For any young kids that think having a baby is a good idea, it should be mandatory that they know what they're in for.
This situation could of been avoided.

I quit smoking when I was pregnant, but picked it back up like 3 days out of the hospital, because it gave me a excuse to put her down and walk outside. She is a wonderful kid but she was a horrid infant. There were nights I wanted to run away screaming.

Having a 2 yr old, 1 year old and a newborn almost drove me crazy. I did a lot of walking away. They are 30, 29 and 27 now. I didn't kill even one of them. When you have a baby, there's no romance involved. That's all some kinda fantasy. It's hard work, and if you decide to have a baby, you should be prepared to raise it.

Fry his ass.

I work at a residential school. Many of the people who work there also live there.
The nurse, Cassandra, works NIGHT shift. Has 3 kids under the age of 6, PLUS she is a dorm mother.
If Cassandra can watch 43 kids, pretty much anyone SHOULD be able to take care of 1 without beating them to death. But I do stress the word SHOULD.

princessgrandma, I am so like you. I had a 4 year old, 2 year old and a newborn all at the ripe old age of 25. Not once did I ever wig out and shake one, beat one, or starve either one of them. Going to the market was like an olympic sport for me. But I got through the tantrums, crying spills and all the toddler infant nightmarish stuff....secretly I miss those days. I am a weird one because I truly loved that time in my life. I didn't wear anything fancy or cute. I was always in sneakers, jeans and a t-shirt but I loved it.

The first two years of my children's lives were the easiest for me. Sure, babies cry when they need something. They cry when they want to be cuddled. They cry, sleep, eat, poop, and smile. They don't get into shit, they don't talk back. You can put them in their crib and they will stay there.
I think he would have killed Hunter by the time he was a toddler if Hunter had lived that long. If you can't handle a baby without beating them to death, you sure can't raise child into adulthood.
Cut off his dick, feed it to some Piranha, and let him bleed out while he watches those suckers eating his junk.

Mybabiesmomma, oh yes, I remember the jeans, sneakers and t-shirt uniform of early motherhood. No worries about matching or coordination, just jump in them on the way to the first diaper change and/or feeding of the day. In some ways, those were simpler times, and I'd love to go back and have that special time again, but then, I look at the grandkids now and know that I can love and cuddle them, then send them home with mommy and daddy and have my quiet time again. THAT is worth a billion, too, these days. I do enjoy the time when it's just Pa and me again, too lol.

In his short life, Hunter Meadows suffered from multiple rib fractures, a broken right collarbone, eye injuries, a bruised brain and a fractured skull, an autopsy report found.

On Friday, Alleghany County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Judge Laura Dascher certified capital murder and felony child abuse charges against Jared Meadows in the death of his infant son last fall.

The charges will go to a grand jury April 9. If the grand jury indicts Meadows, the case will be set for trial in Alleghany Circuit Court.

Meadows, 25, is accused of causing a fatal skull fracture when he forcefully placed the infant on the uncushioned armrest of a couch.Hunter was 27 days old when he died two days after the injury.

Commonwealth's Attorney Ed Stein summarized the autopsy report and noted the rib fractures had occurred over time and were not all new.
[...]

The charges against Meadows were certified after a 90-minute hearing that included testimony from Covington police Sgt. Kenny Duncan, who investigated the case, and Hunter's mother, Jessica Wykle, who said she had only once left her baby alone with his father until the morning of the injuries.

Duncan said he spoke to Meadows and Wykle throughout that week and at one point told Meadows he thought Meadows had killed his son. Eventually, Duncan said, Meadows met him and Wykle at a Hardee's in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., where he confessed to him that he forcefully placed Hunter on the armrest — which had a fabric covering but no padding — when the baby wouldn't take a bottle.

Meadows, who wore a gray suit to the hearing, was supported by a large contingent of friends and family. At one point during Duncan's testimony, Dascher reprimanded two of the defendant's supporters, Phillip Justin Meadows and Cherie Warren, for laughing. She asked they leave the courtroom. As a bailiff walked them out, Phillip Meadows complained, "This is a joke. All of y'all are jokes," which led Dascher to charge both with contempt of court.

Yeah... that's BOUND to help douchebag's case. Fucking idiots.

Putting that baby "forcefully" on the armrest was not likely the cause of those injuries. Although, it had to be bad enough in itself. I hate to think just what was going on to fracture collarbone, and cause eye injuries. The ribs -- squeezing, of course; the skull and brain -- hitting his head against things, the armrest, the changing station, the shaking. That s***head f***ing "father" deserves to have his head cracked open.
