One person has been detained after deputies responded to reports of a shooting at a church in Laguna Woods that reportedly injured multiple people.

According to the Orange County Sheriff's Department, the person was detained at around 2 p.m. on Sunday at Geneva Presbyterian Church.
The sheriff's department said deputies have also recovered a weapon that may have been used.

The congregants of an Orange County church are being hailed as heroes after they managed to hog-tie a gunman who went on a shooting spree on Sunday afternoon in what sheriff's have described as an act of 'exceptional heroism and bravery.'

One person was killed and five others were shot at the predominantly Asian-American church in Laguna Woods, in southern California, about 55 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

Six people at the Geneva Presbyterian Church were struck by gunfire after the shooter, said to be an Asian male in his 60s, opened fire at around 1:25pm. That man is now in police custody.

About 40 parishioners witnessed the violence, but those who were present also helped to prevent further bloodshed by overpowering the shooter and tying him up, confiscating his weapons and restraining him until police arrived on the scene.

Police say those involved 'showed exceptional heroism and bravery in detaining the suspect.'

'That group of churchgoers displayed what we believe is exceptional heroism and bravery in intervening to stop the suspect. They undoubtedly prevented additional injuries and fatalities,' Undersheriff Jeff Hallock said. 'I think it's safe to say that had people not intervened, it could have been much worse.'

Two handguns were found on the shooter and were quickly removed.

It's not clear exactly how the parishioners were able to subdue the man, but as soon as they had him on the ground, they tied his arms and legs with electrical or extension cords, Hallock explained.

One of those who was struck suffered fatal wounds and died at the scene at the church. Four of the other victims were critically wounded while a fifth suffered minor injuries.

Two of the victims were taken to Providence Mission Hospital, the medical center confirmed. Another victim was transported to UC Irvine Medical Center, and two more were transported to Orange County Global Medical Center, including a 92-year-old man who was grazed by a bullet.

The majority of those inside the church were believed to be of Taiwanese descent and had gathered to honor a former pastor of the church for which a lunch reception was being held after Sunday morning's service.

A motive for the shooting, which took place in Simpson Hall rather than the main auditorium where services are normally held, wasn't immediately known but investigators don't believe the gunman lives in the community, Hallock said.

Sheriff John Mina said police were still working to determine a motive and do not know whether it was a 'hate-related' incident.

Mina also said that it was not known whether the suspect had any connections to the church or whether any victims had been targeted.

'Until we do that, we won't really have a good idea if he was known to the congregants,' Hallock said

Are churches going to have to start organizing drills to teach their parisionners what to do in case of an attack? If so, these people would be excellent trainers.

A gunman in a deadly attack at a Southern California church was a Chinese immigrant motivated by hate for Taiwanese people, authorities said.

The shooter killed Dr. John Cheng, 52, and wounded five others during a lunch held by Irvine Taiwanese Presbyterian Church, which worships at Geneva Presbyterian Church in Laguna Woods, authorities said at a Monday news conference.
Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes said the motive of the shooting was a grievance between the shooter, identified as a Chinese immigrant and U.S. citizen, and the Taiwanese community. China claims Taiwan is a part of its national territory and has not ruled out force to bring the island under its rule.

The suspect was identified as David Chou, 68, of Las Vegas. He has been booked on one count of murder and five counts of attempted murder and is being held on $1 million bail.

A Las Vegas man accused of killing a prominent doctor and injuring five others in a church shooting in Laguna Woods is set to appear in court on Tuesday.

David Chou was arrested on Sunday after what authorities called a "politically-motivated hate incident" inside the Geneva Presbyterian Church. He is being held on $1 million bail.

A statement from the Irvine Taiwanese Presbyterian Church congregation Monday afternoon said the congregation welcomed its former pastor, Billy Chang, returning from Taiwan, for a guest sermon at 10 a.m.

"At around 10:10 a.m., a man whom the receptionist did not recognize entered the sanctuary. He was wearing a black shirt with a word written on it in white; some believe the word on his shirt was 'Security,'" the statement said. "The receptionist welcomed him and asked him in Taiwanese to fill out a form providing his personal information. The man refused, claiming that he had attended services at this church twice in the past and had already filled out the form."

Taiwanese Presbyterian Church, which holds its services at Geneva, said Chou took a newspaper and sat in the back reading it during the church service. After the service, a lunch banquet was provided where 140 people attended, many taking pictures with Pastor Chang, according to the church.

During a news conference Monday afternoon, Orange County Sheriff Donald Barnes said Chou acted alone in carrying out the shooting and was not a regular attendee of the church.

"He is not believed to be associated with any specific church or any religion, and there's no direct connection to the church or any member of the church that we're aware of," said Barnes.
The sheriff added the 68-year-old, a U.S. citizen from China, was motivated by anger over political tensions between China and Taiwan. That anger pushed him to travel to Southern California from Las Vegas, where he lives alone and worked in security.

I wonder how long he's been here or if he knows this will have absolutely no effect on the situation with China and Taiwan? Did it really make him feel better or like he was accomplishing something by killing people who have nothing at all to do with the situation? I despise people like him.

I bet Biden won't even mention this shooting or visit with the victims.

Biden does not care about Asians, Jews or Whites (except the criminal ones in his family)
