The grandmother of a 5-year-old boy who was found shot to death as part of a triple homicide Sunday on Detroit’s west side is asking the public to come forward to help police make an arrest in the case.

Shalesa Floyd said her grandson, Caleb Harris, was a light. He should be looking forward to his sixth birthday right now, and his grandmother can’t comprehend how or why someone would hurt him.

“For you to shoot a 5-year-old in the face? Twice? You could have let him go so he could remain and live,” Floyd said.

Detroit police Chief James White said a man and a woman in their 20s and 30s were also killed in the shooting on Evergreen Road. The woman was the child’s mother, he said.

White said family members hadn’t heard from the victims in weeks, and they found the back door had been kicked in.

“They continued to check the house for additional victims, and unfortunately they did find a third victim, a child, in a room deceased,” White said.

The child had been shot multiple times, according to the chief.

“To do this -- it’s like a monster would do this,” Floyd said.

Police said they’re searching for a person of interest.

“Every resource we have, as you look around, is going to be dedicated to getting the perpetrator off the street who murdered this baby and these two people in this home,” White said.

A triple homicide rocks Detroit’s west side with two of the victims being a mother and her young child, between ages 4-7.

“This is someone who violently took a baby’s life,” said police chief James White.

White said the family hadn’t heard from the victims in weeks. After realizing a back door was kicked in, they made the grizzly discovery of a man and awoman in their 20s and 30s dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

“They continued to check the house for additional victims, and unfortunately they did find a third victim of child in a room deceased,” Chief White added.

The child had been shot multiple times.

“It was clearly the kid’s bedroom was just a very tragic scene,” the chief explained.

Investigators searched the entire house for evidence as tensions rise across the street between police and onlookers.

Right now, there’s no telling how long the three were inside. Police said they are searching for a person of interest.

“Every resource we have, as you look around, is going to be dedicated to getting the perpetrator off the street who murdered this baby and these two people in this home,” Chief White said.

The gas station across the street from where this happened is a Green Light location. Police will be looking to see if any footage was captured that can help on the investigation.

Obviously the shooter is someone the kid knew well enough to identify. No need to shoot him if all he can tell cops is that a man with a gun came. He had to know the shooter and saw them so they got rid of a potential witness.

Sick shit. But I betcha $5 It's someone the family knows.

He was so so cute. What a charming, gorgeous smile. How lucky his mom was to see that little face every day.

Lashon Marshall, and her boyfriend, Aaron Benson were also murdered.

Interesting
Grandma said her son had been trying to get custody of Caleb and she pointed the finger at Children's Protective Services for not doing more. A spokesperson for the agency could not be reached Tuesday.

"CPS has a devoted job to do for these children and young adults to look after the welfare of these children and where they go," she said. "Make sure things are right before you just say we'll leave him over here. That’s not right for the child, because had it been, my grandson would not be getting ready to be buried at 5 years old."

This is why you STOP the street shit, the drug, thug shit when you have kids. When you put your life on the line that's on YOU, but when you put your kid at risk that's when it goes to far. This had to be about drugs or gang ties, especially knowing the paternal side of the family had enough concerns to contact CPS.

A 5-year-old boy who was murdered along with his mother and her boyfriend inside of a Detroit home in February was shot 9 times, according to documents presented in court on Thursday.

Caleb Harris, 5, was shot and killed on Feb. 18 after authorities say the shooter killed his mom and his mom's boyfriend. On Thursday, the suspected shooter, Malcolm Hardy, was in court for a preliminary hearing and was bound over for trial for the murder of all three.

Aaron Benson, LaShon Marshall, and her son Caleb were killed that night when authorities said Hardy fired a total of 22 shots out of a gun that was allegedly owned by Benson.

Three witnesses were called including the cousin of Marshall, the first responding Detroit police officer, and a friend of Hardy's. The friend testified that Hardy had confessed to him what happened inside the home on Evergreen near Finkell.

The friend said the three teens did ‘jobs’ for Benson, which included delivering weed for him.
According to the friend, he was at home the night of Feb. 18 when his twin brother and Hardy left the home. A couple of hours later, they returned and Hardy was holding a gun.

The weapon, a black gun with an extended clip, was one that he knew Benson had owned. He testified that Benson had showed the weapon to him before and Hardy explained that he had shot him with his own gun before shooting Marshall and Caleb.

He said his brother and Hardy were upset and Hardy explained what happened.

According to what Hardy told the friend, Hardy and the friend's brother were at Benson's home that night. Hardy claimed Benson had grabbed his shirt and tried to punch him, so he grabbed Benson's gun and shot him with it.

He then said that he shot his girlfriend in the butt by accident and then he shot her in the head, killing her. There was a third person in the house and Hardy allegedly said that he believed little Caleb was ‘going to snitch on him’.

The friend then testified that Hardy shot the little boy in the leg and then shot him in the head.

Neither the friend nor the police officer who testified said how many shots were fired but, when Judge Kenneth King ordered him to trial, he said that a total of 22 shots were fired.

Judge King said Caleb was shot 9 times, Benson was also shot 9 times, and Marshall was shot four times.

Hardy said the friend's brother was outside of the home at the time of the shooting.

Judge King said there were holes in Hardy's story about shooting Benson in self-defense. He said that, between the shootings, he said Hardy had time to reflect on his actions - which shows premeditation for murder. He ordered Hardy be bound over on all charges. He'll be arraigned in third circuit court on May 19.

Earlier this year, Malcolm Ray Hardy pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree murder for killing Aaron Benson, LaShon Marshall, and her son, Caleb Harris, in February 2022.

Today he learned that he’ll spend at least 30 years in prison.
