Investigators say they have found the body believed to be that of a child who disappeared from Emmett on Monday.

During a Thursday evening news conference, Gem County Sheriff Donnie Wunder said the remains still need to be identified but investigators believe it’s 8-year-old Taryn Summers Quinton.

“A suspect was arrested in Ada County,” Wunder said. He did not share the suspect’s identity but a search of the Ada County Jail roster shows a 54-year-old Emmett woman named Connie Smith was booked Thursday evening on a first-degree murder charge.

“Law enforcement has been in contact with Taylor and does not believe her to be in danger at this time. Family has been in contact with Tristan Sexton and law enforcement does not believe him to be in danger at this time,” Wunder said.

Investigators have said little about the case but EastIdahoNews.com uncovered court documents that show Taylor, Taryn and a younger sibling all tested positive for hard drugs in 2019, leading to an injury to a child conviction against their mother. The mother’s current spouse is currently in Idaho Department of Correction custody on an unrelated case.

Family members have said on social media that the children were not living with their mother at the time of their disappearances.

Connie Ann Smith is not the Grandma. Connie was the foster mother of all three missing kids who are all siblings. But why were they in foster care when looking at FB pages, those kids had grandparents and an Aunt at the very least? They had family outside of the the kid's parent(s), who bares a lot of responsibility since his/her actions got those kids placed in foster care in the first place. Why couldn't the kids extended family take those kids in?

$3,800 raised of $8,000 goal
On Thursday April 15th 2021, the body of my 8 year old niece Taryn Summers aka Taryn Quinton was recovered from the property of the foster home she was living at in Emmett, Idaho. She had been reported missing on Monday April 12th 2021 and was found 3 days later. Her 2 older siblings, Tristan and Taylor are still reported as runaways from this same foster home as well. The foster guardian Connie Smith was arrested on 1st degree murder charges. This is a huge devastation and loss to my sister, my family and I and we are completely heartbroken to lose a family member at such a young age and in such a tragic way. Taryn had a personality twice her size and was a very funny and smart little girl who could always make everyone laugh. I am hoping to raise money to help my sister cover the cost to allow her beautiful little girl to be properly laid to rest with dignity amongst her family and friends. Taryn is so loved and was a bright light taken in such an evil way from this world way too soon and she will be greatly missed.

The body of 8-year-old Tayrn Summers was found inside a black trash bag inside a vehicle in Emmett, newly released court documents allege.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Connie Smith reported her 8-year-old grandaughter missing on April 12 and told a deputy that Taryn defecated on the carpet and used her hands to smear the feces into the carpet. The PCA says Smith, the same day, carried a sleeping Summers from her black Lexus inside her home and into a bedroom where she needed to stay due to the punishment.

The deceased victim is believed to be Summers, who had her name blackened out in the PCA document other than the first letter "T."

On April 14, the Idaho Mountain Search and Rescue arrived at the property and searched the outside of the home with live scent and cadaver sniffing dogs, but no positive results were made.

The PCA says a second search was made at the property, and the young girl's body was found inside a black trash bag, on the floorboard in the second-row seating area. During an autopsy, officials say Summers had vomit on her shirt and in her hair, not feces.

The vehicle is registered to her son, David Eugene Summers, the PCA states.

During the initial investigation, "the information provided to law enforcement was Connie did not know where the key (was) for the vehicle," the PCA states.

Smith, once booked into the Ada County Jail on a first-degree murder warrant, is now charged with felony failure to notify a death and felony destruction, alteration, or concealment of evidence. On Monday, a judge set Smith's bail at $800,000 and scheduled her preliminary hearing for May 3.

"In reviewing the probable cause affidavit, the alleged conduct is disturbing," the judge said. "Report that the child was missing. Ultimately the discovery of the deceased child on the property, I believe two days later. The potential penalty, depending on the conclusion of the investigation could be severe.”

The older brother of a girl found dead in the back of her grandmother’s car has been reported missing again.

The Idaho Missing Person’s Clearinghouse reports 17-year-old Tristian Conner Sexton was last seen on Oct. 1 in Twin Falls. Sexton is the older brother of 8-year-old Taryn Summers, who investigators found dead in Gem County back in April.

According to Tristian’s missing person report, the teen was supposed to be on a bus for a football game but he left in an unknown car. Officials say it’s not clear where Tristian would have gone.

Taryn is not the only sibling of Tristian to tragically die this year. KTVB reported in July that 15-year-old Taylor Summers drowned during a swimming incident in the Snake River.

All three siblings were reported as runaways over separate days in 2020 and 2021 as the investigation into Taryn’s death unfolded. Once investigators discovered the 8-year-old’s body, Gem County Sheriff’s deputies reported both teens were safe and accounted for.

Their grandmother, 54-year-old Connie Smith cared for the kids and was charged with felony failure to notify of a death and felony destruction, concealment or alteration of evidence. Smith is scheduled for a jury trial in January 2022. Officials have not said how Taryn died.

The grandmother of a Gem County girl reported missing in April 2021 and later found dead has pleaded guilty to two felony counts related to the death of eight-year-old Taryn Summers.

On Wednesday, Connie Ann Smith, 54, of Emmett entered guilty pleas to felony injury to a child and felony failure to report a death, Gem County Prosecuting Attorney Erick Thomson announced Wednesday.
Thomson said the prosecutors, Smith and Smith's defense attorney attended criminal mediation in the case last week, and that Wednesday's plea is a result of that mediation.

Smith's granddaughter, Taryn Summers, was reported missing April 12, 2021, from her home on Airport Road in Emmett. According to court documents, Smith told the Gem County Sheriff's Office that Taryn had run away.
One day after Taryn was reported missing, her remains were found inside a trash bag in a car that was registered to Smith's son - a car investigators said Smith had been driving the day she reported Taryn missing.

Smith turned herself in and was booked into Ada County Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder, but prosecutors decided not to pursue that charge.

An Emmett grandmother who didn’t seek medical attention for her granddaughter — resulting in 8-year-old Taryn Summers’ death — was sentenced to 20 years in prison Friday.

Connie Ann Smith, 54, pleaded guilty to felony injury to a child and felony failure to notify authorities of a death, according to online court records, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years fixed.
At an emotional, two-hour sentencing hearing, 3rd District Judge Gene Petty sentenced Smith to five years fixed and 15 years indeterminate. Smith could be eligible for parole by 2026.
“All you had to do was love us and take care of us,” Taryn’s brother, Tristan Conner Sexton, said Friday speaking towards Smith during the sentencing hearing. “What was so wrong with us that you mistreated us and abused us? That, I’ll never understand.”
The details of what happened to Taryn were unclear until Friday.

In April 2021, the family of Taryn was “forever changed” after Gem County authorities reported her and her two older siblings missing, family member Daryl Hall Sexton testified Friday. But 8-year-old Taryn wasn’t missing — she was dead.
Taryn’s 15-year-old sister Taylor Summers died two months after Taryn in an accidental drowning in Twin Falls, the Emmett Messenger-Index reported. Taylor and Tristan ran away in 2020 but had frequent contact with family.
“You caused the death of Taryn,” Daryl Hall Sexton said. “Taryn was malnourished, she was tormented and she lived in fear every day in your care. You took away her dignity. You never allowed her to flourish or develop into the beautiful girl she was.”
Three days after Taryn was reported missing, Idaho State Police Det. Sgt. Jason Horst opened the back door of a Lexus — parked outside Smith’s home — and found a black trash bag, he testified during an August hearing.

“I kind of got that feeling of what I’d find when I opened it,” Horst said. “I immediately thought that it was the body of Taryn Summers.”
The body was in fact Taryn’s, Gem County Sheriff investigator Lt. Jason McIntosh told the court in August.

Prior to sentencing Smith, Petty said that while Smith’s intentions might have been good, she failed.

“You were responsible for her, you were responsible to make sure that she was taken care of well — that she got the care that she needed,” Petty said “And you failed at that. You neglected to get Taryn the help that she clearly needed.”

“What was so wrong with us that you mistreated us and abused us? That, I’ll never understand.”

There was nothing wrong with you children, but there was a lot wrong with your grandmother. Don't think for one second that any of you were to blame in any way for what she did.

The judge gave this bitch too much credit.

If kids are running away and one dies your intentions were to getting money or accolades not to care or love these children.
