A 3-year-old child was killed and his mother was injured when they were attacked by two dogs in the backyard of a New Jersey home Tuesday, according to officials.

At about 4:30 p.m., police responded to a home in Carteret following the report of a dog attack.

The victims were airlifted to the hospital, Mayor Dan Reiman said. The child was pronounced dead, and his mother suffered serious injuries.

The screams were so loud, a neighbor said, he thought it was the sound of a TV show, before he looked out the window and saw the attack.

Two pit bulls that mauled a toddler to death and seriously injured his mother in New Jersey have been euthanized, police officials said Wednesday.

The dogs belonged to a home on nearby Birch Street but were not registered with the town, as is required by law, according to Mayor Dan Reiman. It wasn’t clear whether the dogs’ owner would face charges related to the deadly incident.

The mayor’s office started a fundraiser to help the family pay for medical and funeral expenses through the town’s nonprofit 501c3 Charity Trust Fund. Reiman said 100% of funds raised will be provided to the family.

“What happened is sad and an unfortunate thing. A friend of my daughter, she was passing by, the dogs were running and she stopped [and saw] the dogs had blood on them. The cops told her ‘just go! Drive! Drive.'”

I certainly hope the owner faces charges. Those dogs weren't properly socialized and trained; that much is obvious from what happened.

By the way, my next door neighbor's Cane Corso puppy is now 100 lbs at 9 months. They had him out Monday evening when he decided to greet the other next door neighbor as she was getting into her car. He got a little too friendly and was going to get into her car when she shut the door on his head. She's not an animal person at all.

I didn't watch or listen to the video, but the print article only states: "A neighbor said the dog attacked the child and his mother inside of the home’s backyard; the dog came into the rear of the yard from under the fence." If I'm mistaken, I apologize, but, if I am right, I will continue to believe what I originally wrote.

A 3-year-old New Jersey boy was playing in his new home's yard for the very first time with his mother when a neighbor's dog escaped an enclosure and attacked them both, killing the young child and leaving his mother severely injured, a source close to the family told NBC New York.

The source close to family tells NBC New York that with dad Tanveer at work, the mother and her sons were playing in the backyard of their Laurel Street home in Carteret Tuesday afternoon when the two dogs got through the fence.

The mom was able to get the older boys to run immediately inside, but little Aziz was too young to fully grasp the situation. As the dogs ran toward the young boy, his mother threw her body on top of him as protection, the source tells News 4.

The canines lived on the opposite side of the victims' backyard, and came charging through a hole in a fence before going after the boy and his mother. Other holes covered by cinderblocks could be seen along the fence.
