I guess someone who sees it the same as we do, talked him into changing his plea since they knew he wouldn't be treated leniently by the judge. I agree so prison time, cause he's got to live everyday with his family who will daily remind him of the sweet little girl he dropped.

People who haven't been drinking don't refuse breath tests.

Any lawyer worth his or her salt would have torn this guy to shreds in a courtroom. I can promise a very rich Jewish owned cruise line has some pretty good lawyers. If he was charging drinks to the room they'd have records of it all. In one or more ways HE messed up and needed to man up to it.

I guess he'll finally be sober unless he drinks the toilet wine. I couldn't live with myself if I did such a thing sober much less because I had been drinking.
He’s not getting any jail time for pleading guilty. Probation only and he gets to serve it in Indiana. So unless he makes it a habit to concoct toilet wine at home he’ll probably stick with store bought.

The northern Indiana man who was holding his granddaughter when she fell from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship has pleaded guilty in the toddler's death, reports the Indianapolis Star, a USA TODAY Network publication.

According to a family attorney, Salvatore "Sam" Anello pleaded guilty Thursday in Puerto Rico to negligent homicide. He was holding 18-month-old Chloe Wiegand when she slipped from his grasp and fell from the 11th-floor window of a ship docked in Puerto Rico in 2019.

Attorney Michael Winkleman said in statement that there will be no jail time and probation will be served in Indiana, where the toddler's family lives.

"This decision was an incredibly difficult one for Sam and the family, but because the plea agreement includes no jail time and no admission of facts, it was decided the plea deal is in the best interests of the family so that they can close this horrible chapter and turn their focus to mourning Chloe and fighting for cruise passenger safety by raising awareness about the need for all common carriers to adhere to window fall prevention laws designed to protect children from falling from windows," Winkleman said in a statement.

Winkleman said the plea agreement has no impact on the family's ongoing civil lawsuit against Royal Caribbean. The family claims the cruise line was negligent for failing to provide safety features on the windows.

In a motion to dismiss the civil lawsuit filed earlier this year, Royal Caribbean blamed Anello, calling him "reckless and irresponsible."

"His actions, which no reasonable person could have foreseen, were reckless and irresponsible and the sole reason why Chloe is no longer with her parents," the cruise line said.

The filing also claims Surveillance video shows Anello leaning out of the open window for about eight seconds just moments before he lifted the little girl.

"This is a case about an adult man," Royal Caribbean said in its motion, "who, as surveillance footage unquestionably confirms: (1) walked up to a window he was aware was open; (2) leaned his upper body out the window for several seconds; (3) reached down and picked up Chloe; and (4) then held her by and out of the open window for thirty four seconds before he lost his grip and dropped Chloe out of the window."

If this is factual then I am changing my stance.
The parents should be suing him.

It is factual. It was always his fault, the family just doesn't want to accept that because it is so horrible and devastating, and on some level I can't blame them. Otherwise, mom has to accept that her own dad killed her baby.
I was going off how it was first reported. That he didn't know there was no glass. If he stuck his head out then he knew there was no glass.

That high barrier and careless baby dangling was proved pretty darn fast. It takes a lot of effort to keep the "I didn't know the chest high window was open" lie going.
I cannot imagine how a civil lawsuit will succeed. I hope the cruise line wins in court. There was simply no reason for the old idiot to dangle his granddaughter out that window.

"The grandfather who was with his 18-month-old granddaughter when she fell to her death from an open window on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship was sentenced Monday to three years of probation, according to Puerto Rico's Department of Justice."

A new court filing submitted by the parents of a toddler Chloe Wiegand, who died aboard a Caribbean cruise ship in 2019, alleges that the cruise line intentionally destroyed video footage.

MailOnline reports that Chloe’s parents, Alan and Kimberly Wiegand, are seeking a “spoliation of evidence” default judgment after claiming Caribbean Cruise Lines intentionally destroyed evidence that may have found the cruise line culpable for Chloe’s death.

The family needs to let it go.

Yeah I agree. I understand their obsession of rehashing the incident, but that’s not how that baby should live on. They are just prolonging their suffering. They need to seek help to heal. Easier said than done, I would probably just fall apart.

A federal judge has ruled Royal Caribbean is not responsible for the death of an 18-month-old Indiana toddler.

Chloe Wiegand died on July 7, 2019 when she fell 150 feet through an open window while being held by her grandfather, Salvatore “Sam” Anello, on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship.

Chloe’s parents sued Royal Caribbean for negligence that led to their child’s death.

The federal judge in Miami, Florida ruled in favor of Royal Caribbean, with court documents stating a “reasonable person through ordinary use of his senses would have known of the dangers” of holding a child so close to an open window on a cruise ship.

Anello pleaded guilty to negligent homicide in 2020 and is currently serving a probation sentence.

The Wiegand family issued this statement:

The family is surprised and deeply saddened by the court’s ruling. This is a matter that should be decided by a jury, and we are confident and hopeful the appellate court will agree. We will be filing the appeal shortly and we will continue to fight and raise awareness about the dangers of unintentional toddler window falls. This case was always about Chloe and shining a light on her brief but beautiful life. That goal has not changed.”

That family, and especially that umm former grandfather I guess? wtf???

held the baby out the window for 30-40 seconds?

dude you are a total tard, and anyone blaming that cruise ship is chin-deep in denial.

The Wiegand family's lawyer issued this statement:

The family is surprised and deeply saddened by the court’s ruling. We think this case might get results that we like better if decided by a more-gullible jury, and we demand that the appellate court agree with us. We will be filing the appeal shortly and we will continue to deny the facts about what happened and exaggerate the dangers of unintentional toddler window falls. This case was always about our fixation and denial, and that goal has not changed.”

Fixed that for them.
