Hanahan Police say a babysitter is facing charges following the death of a 2-year-old boy.

The police department says they received a call about a possible drowning on May 23 on River Rock Road which is in the Commons at Tanner Plantation neighborhood.

Authorities say Stefanie Johnson is facing charges for unlawful conduct towards a child. She’s out of jail on a $25,000 bond.

According to an arrest warrant, Johnson discovered the 2-year-old boy face down in a backyard swimming pool. First responders say they saw bruises on the child’s forehead and lips and the child was breathing shallow.

Police say Johnson was under the influence of alcohol and prescribed medications and that she admitted to that in an interview.

Hanahan Police say the child was taken to MUSC, was placed on a ventilator and died two days later at the hospital.

Reports say Johnson was arrested the day after the incident and was released on a $25,000 bond. Officials say she was a friend of the child’s mother and was keeping the child while his mother worked.

Hanahan police say this is an active investigation.

The Berkeley County Coroner’s office is conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The State Law Enforcement Division’s Child Fatality Task Force is also assisting in this investigation.

The fate of a former Berkeley County babysitter who was charged in the death of a 2-year-old over four years ago has been decided.
Stefanie Ann Johnson pleaded guilty to inflicting great bodily injury upon a child earlier this year, which replaced her initial charge of homicide by child abuse. She also pleaded guilty to unlawfully placing a child at risk of or causing harm or willfully abandoning a child.
Johnson was a regular babysitter for 2-year-old Alex Young, who was found unconscious in a backyard pool in May 2020.

During the investigation, police said they found a Google search on Johnson’s phone asking how to get water out of lungs at 6:15 p.m. She did not call 911 until 7:50 p.m. He died days later as a result.

“One hour and 35 minutes, 5,700 seconds,” the victim’s mother Jennifer Young said. “That’s how much time she had to call for help. That’s how much time she had to run across the street to the fire station.”
Johnson addressed the courtroom herself for the first time through tears, saying she loved Alex Young with her whole heart”

“I have deep remorse for putting Jennifer, family, and friends in distress, grief, sadness, anger and misunderstanding of what happened,” Johnson said. “I know this is illogical, but I wish I could have a magic wand and have Alex alive and me dead.”
Following a first-time apology years in the making.

“I’m sorry,” Johnson said when she turned to face Young.
Johnson will now spend the next ten years in prison followed by five years’ probation. If she violates that probation, she will go back behind bars for another ten years.
