A 23-year-old woman has been arrested after investigators said she intentionally set her car on fire while her 14-month-old son sat inside.

The Columbia Police Department has charged Caylin Watson with attempted murder, first-degree arson, third-degree arson, and abuse of great bodily injury.

Investigators said the car was parked near mile marker 1 on I-126 West just after 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Because of the fire, the child suffered severe burns on his body and is listed in critical condition at the Augusta Burn Center. Watson was also treated for minor injuries at a local hospital before she was taken to jail.

Four witnesses traveling along the highway saw the car on fire and stopped to help by either calling 911 or getting out of their vehicles to help the child.

Columbia Police officers arrived on the scene along with members of the Columbia Fire Department to put out the fire.

Watson was detained by authorities after they found evidence suggesting the fire was intentionally set.

Investigators say the child suffered severe burns all over his body and is in critical condition at the Augusta Burn Center.

Watson was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries before being taken to jail. She’s currently being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

Fourteen-month-old Kairon Bramsen is currently recovering at the Augusta Burn Center in Georgia, after officials say his mother, 23-year-old Caylin Watson intentionally set her car on fire knowing her son would be trapped inside.

Columbia police officers and firefighters responded to I-126 Westbound Sunday after four people driving by helped to take the child out of a car engulfed in flames.

After investigation, authorities believe that she attempted to murder her infant son.

The family members of the boy did not want to speak on camera, but said Bramsen is "an amazing child with the most gorgeous blue eyes anyone has ever seen."

Watson is being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, and is now facing multiple charges: Attempted murder, first and third-degree arson, abuse, and infliction of great bodily injury upon a child. Her bond had been denied.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is also helping investigate Watson's motives.

Bramsen's family has set up a GoFundMe page for his surgery bills. If you'd like to donate, click here.

He has suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns on 20% of his body on areas around his face, hands, legs, and feet. He's currently at Augusta burn center in Georgia, where he will need multiple surgeries of skin grafts while he is there. He will also need future skin graft surgeries as well. Kairon has no medical insurance. We are attempting to raise money to cover his medical expenses, hospital stay, surgeries supplies, and more. As well as travel expenses driving back and forth from Augusta to work everyday. This money will also be used for any future and unseen expenses related to the complete recovery and well being that Kairon may need to heal from this. Please keep Kairon in your prayers and thank you for your support.

What a beautiful little boy-and he’s doing the curls right! What the ever loving fuck is wrong with her? If you want to kill your kid, at least do it in a quicker, less terrifying way. They need to give her 3rd degree burns all over her body and make her go through the excruciating pain and debridement that he’s having to live through. That had to be so scary for that poor kid.

The Richland County Sheriff's Department has now released a report that was taken on Sunday just hours before the fire. The document states that Kairon's father went to the sheriff's department's headquarters to report an exchange with the child's mother. The man claimed in the report Watson tried to hit him with her car.

According to the report, the man said the two then argued and the woman came at him with a knife, and later rammed the car he was in while their son was inside.

After filing the report, Kairon's father later returned to the sheriff's department to notify deputies of another threat he said Watson made. That led deputies to try and find the woman by pinging her cell phone.

The woman and child were later found along I-126 at the scene of the burning vehicle.

The investigation into the incident continues.

Wednesday, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department released a new report saying the baby’s father came to them concerned right before the fire was set.

It says the man claimed he was at Watson’s house earlier in the day Sunday when she got angry and came at him with a knife.

The man told deputies he took the knife from her and tried to leave. Before he could, he said Watson threw flower pots at the car he was in, cracking the windshield.

The car he was in belongs to his current girlfriend, he told deputies.

As he tried to drive away, he claims Watson got into her car -- with their 14-month-old baby -- and rammed his girlfriend’s vehicle.

The man told deputies he left and went straight to the sheriff’s department. Deputies took a report, along with pictures of the car and the knife.

But soon the man went back to RCSD, saying Watson contacted him saying she was “just going to drive off into the water.”

The baby was still with her and the child’s father was concerned.

Deputies pinged Watson’s cell phone, which showed she was near Columbia River Front Park. But when they tried to find her she wasn’t there.

After pinging her phone a second time, deputies said it appeared she had returned to her house.

As deputies were heading to Watson’s house to check on her and the child, Columbia police alerted them that they found her and the baby because her car was on fire on I-126.

A woman was released from jail on a $100,000 bond after being arrested for leaving her child in a burning car.

Twenty-three-year-old Caylin Watson was arrested in May and charged with attempted murder.

Investigators say she set her car on fire on Interstate 126 with her child, Kairon Bramsen, still inside.

Now the father of her child, Steven Bramsen, said he was furious when he found out she was released.

"It is kind of disturbing that anyone could do something like that to their child and be released out into the world," said Bramsen.

The toddler is still suffering from 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns and still has several surgeries to go through to fully recover.

"On his right hand his fingers are starting to web together because the scarring has gotten so bad," said Bramsen.

On top of all that, Bramsen said he now has to worry about his little one's safety.

"I have to worry about my safety, let alone his safety," said Bramsen. "Is someone going to come to my house in the middle of the night or seek revenge for what wasn't completed?"

For Bramsen, the scars of the fire are not just skin deep.

"He knows what his mother did to him," said Bramsen. "This is something I have to deal with and something he will have to deal with for the majority of his life."

We do not yet know when Watson will go to trial, but Bramsen said he hopes there will be justice for his son.

Almost six months later, Kairon’s dad Steven says his son is on the road to recovery.

“Now he’s just doing his recovery. Wearing his compression sleeves and dealing with scaring,” said Bramsen. “The scaring has gotten so thick on one of his feet and hands that it’s actually starting to web his toes and fingers together.”

Kairon has already received a number of treatments for his burns and Bramsen said soon the 1-year-old will have to see specialists out of state, but despite the scary experience, Kairon remains a happy and normal kid.

“He has good spirits, I just think that he knows that he’s not going to be the same as everyone else,” said Bramsen.

On top of the countless surgeries and procedures, Steven Bramsen says one of the toughest challenges his son will have to face is trying to understand exactly what happened.

“I’m gonna have to explain to him you know, this is what happened this is what she did. We will never know why, but this is what happened,” he said.
