A 38-year-old man is facing murder and child abuse charges in the death of his girlfriend's baby.

Sonny Larsen, 38, was arraigned on charges of open murder and first-degree child abuse Thursday, Nov. 15, in the death of the 7-month-old infant.

Larsen, who lived with his girlfriend and her four children and watched the infant on a daily basis while she worked, admitted to detectives that he harmed the child, an officer said during a probable cause hearing in Kalamazoo County District Court Thursday, Nov. 15.

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers responded to an unresponsive infant. They attempted lifesaving efforts and transported the infant to Bronson Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Larsen said he became upset in the morning because the baby was crying and he was unable to calm him. He said he violently shook the baby, causing the baby to stop breathing, and threw him to the floor. He said he attempted but couldn't resuscitate him, then laid him in a pack-and-play even though he knew he was dead.

Larsen said he went to sleep for several hours. His girlfriend looked in on the baby when she got home from work around 5:30 p.m., but he told her he was sleeping, according to probable cause testimony..

A neighbor said she has had concerns about Larsen for months, calling him evil and saying he yelled a lot.

The neighbor said she called Children Protective Services over the summer to report possible abuse involving the baby and his siblings and was told nothing could be done.

"I spoke to somebody immediately and asked them what I could do about it. This was months and months ago, this was back in May," the neighbor said, who wished to remain anonymous.

She said CPS couldn't do anything, "because there's no physical marks on the child, it's verbal abuse."

A Kalamazoo man who admitted to violently shaking a baby who died in his care will spend decades in prison.

A judge Monday sentenced Sonny Larsen to 25 to 50 years in prison for the November 2018 death of the 7-month-old boy.

Larsen previously pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

A detective said Larsen was caring for the infant at a Kalamazoo home when he became upset that the baby was crying. Larsen told authorities he violently shook the boy and the baby stopped breathing. Larsen admitted he threw the boy on the ground and tried to resuscitate him, court documents state.

Authorities say once Larsen realized the baby was dead, he placed him in a Pack 'n Play and fell asleep. The boy's mom later came home to find her son unresponsive, court documents said.

I find it hard to believe that mom sis not know this man was a piece of shit.

I doubt this was his first act of violence against the child and that none of the other children told the mom

he was mistreating the baby. The mom also appeared to not have a problem with him verbally mistreating the children-
