13 Conservative Oregon Counties Approves Measure to Secede and Join ‘Greater Idaho’

Another right-leaning county in eastern Oregon has voted to secede from the Democrat-run state and join neighboring Idaho, according to reports.

Crook County residents passed the measure by a 53% majority Tuesday, making it the 13th county in the state to sign onto the movement known as “Greater Idaho,” NewsNation reported.

“The voters of eastern Oregon have spoken loudly and clearly about their desire to see border talks move forward,” said the Greater Idaho movement’s executive director Matt McCaw.

“With this latest result in Crook County, there’s no excuse left for the Legislature and Governor to continue to ignore the people’s wishes.”

The move would shift Idaho’s border 200 miles west past the heart of Oregon.

Greater Idaho began in earnest in 2020 and quickly began picking up traction, with eleven of the state’s 36 counties voting to endorse the idea by 2022.

Driving the force is a sharp political divide between the more sparsely populated, rural and conservative interior of Oregon, and the liberal coastal cities with population hubs like Portland and the state’s capital of Salem.

If Greater Idaho were achieved Oregon would lose two-thirds of its land but only about 10% of its population — a disparity which has left the conservative interior of the state feeling like their laws are being passed by people with no connection to their lifestyle and beliefs.

But in all seriousness, this is quite interesting. This is perhaps presently the most ambitious and relevant state secession movement in the USA. The one with the most substantial traction. While I don't have any special insight in how Oregon runs itself, I can certainly comprehend why there is such a divide between eastern and western Oregon, and empathize with a large rural area feeling disenfranchised by being ruled and disproportionally affected by a handful of cities maybe a much as six or eight hours away by car. I feel there is somewhat of a correlation between the Thirteen Colonies separating itself from Britain, but on a smaller scale and in a more modern setting.

One question: if the Greater Idaho resolution would pass in the way that it currently stands, would Umatilla and Gilliam counties stay with the state of Oregon? If so, then how would those two counties navigate being landlocked by Idaho and Washington, while being completely geographically severed from the rest of Oregon? And how would Sherman County be able to function as part of Idaho when completely surrounded by counties for the states of Oregon and Washington, and therefore essentially severed from Idaho?

I think this plan needs some ironing out, a steep hill of legislation to navigate, and some activists in certain counties should roll out a charismatic public campaign; but I will be following this to see where it leads and if this Greater Idaho plan goes all the way. If eastern Oregon secedes from Oregon and into Idaho, this will affect all of the United States, not the least of which would be from the standpoint of mapmaking.

Believe it or not, Oregon used to be conservative too. I didn't know the man as anything more than "Uncle Tom", but when I was a toddler, Governor Tom McCall (R) was a frequent guest of my Dad's poker games. Senators Packwood (R) and Hatfield (R) too. And my Dad was actually a Democrat. But a sane one. Today's "liberalism" would have shocked him to his core.

Done if you ever get to Portland, OR. (But why would any sane person come here? This place is a shithole, like a Haiti shithole...) I was just curious if it drags or not. I watch LWC some days, and sometimes, it's over and I think they've robbed me of 45+/- minutes it happens so fast and is so funny. Other days (rarely), it drags on forever. I like Tucker. He thinks outside the box. He's not monolithic. I'll give it a whirl. Probably not until the weekend though.

It was Historically Conservative until 1987, the very same year we became the first state in the Nation to bring in "Mail in voting" That same year the Sate did a complete 360 and flipped, and a Republican never took the governor seat again.

If you watch the recalls that have been attempted, seen how the voting districts got strategically segregated and chipped away with the States Supreme Courts Blessing, follow all the money we are just as crooked as California. I just stopped voting years ago, as it honestly made no difference whatsoever.
