A Saginaw man who listed his occupation on court forms as a “criminal” is heading back to prison, this time after prosecutors say he tied up and robbed his elderly aunt only months after he was paroled.

Saginaw County Circuit Judge Manvel Trice III on Tuesday, Jan. 5, sentenced 47-year-old Monroe P. Nugent Jr. to three concurrent prison terms of 30 to 50 years, 10 to 15 years, and two to five years. Trice gave Nugent no credit for time served due to Nugent having been on parole when he perpetrated his latest offenses.

“I believe what Mr. Nugent did here is unspeakable,” said Saginaw County Assistant Prosecutor Carmen Fillmore. “He victimized a 72-year-old woman, terrified her. She was his own aunt. In her own words, in the victim impact statement, she stated she’s shaky, nervous, and scared in her own house. She can’t sleep.”

Nugent has nine prior felony convictions, several of which are violent, Fillmore said. Of those convictions, three are for armed robbery. In all, Nugent has been to prison six times.

In a presentence report questionnaire, Nugent listed his occupation as “criminal,” Fillmore added.

“I believe that Mr. Nugent is a danger to society and I also believe that he’s incapable of rehabilitation,” she said.
The convictions stem from Nugent on the afternoon of Nov. 6, 2019, having visited the Saginaw home of his 72-year-old aunt. During the visit, Nugent grabbed her and threatened her with a knife, then tied her up and stole money and car keys from her pocket, prosecutors allege.

Nugent then left the scene in his aunt’s vehicle, prosecutors allege.

A short while later, Saginaw police spotted the car near the intersection of Hayes and Hamilton streets. They found Nugent outside a nearby apartment and arrested him.
