Elementary School Teacher Faces Federal Charges For Child Porn

"Robert Peri, a music teacher at Memorial Elementary School, was arrested Wednesday at his home in Sugar Land. In October, Federal officials received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children regarding alleged distribution of child pornography from Peri’s e-mail account.

According to court documents, Peri used a personal computer and an HISD computer to distribute 263 images of child porn. This distribution included, according to court records, sending the images, commenting on images, commenting on collections of child porn and requests for passwords to albums containing child porn.

During an interview with investigators, Peri admitted to having a flash drive in his briefcase and a computer in a spare bedroom that both contained child pornography, court records show. He allegedly told investigators he sent and received child porn with others via e-mail and that he used the pictures to masturbate.

Investigators said they uncovered more child porn on two of Peri’s desktop computers as well as two other flash drives.

Geoffrey Womack, Peri's attorney, said he expects Peri to have his bond next week adding he does not believe Peri is a danger to society citing that he has no criminal record.

Womack said because Peri lives in close proximity to a school, if Peri makes bond, he’ll likely have to move and wear an ankle monitor while the charges are pending."

The music teacher in my small town was arrested and convicted for sexually abusing one of his young female students.
Years earlier when I wanted to learn a musical instrument he came to our home one evening to discuss the loan/rental of the instrument, after school practice requirements and to help get me started. I was probably 10.
My parents went into the kitchen while he showed me how to assemble and care for the clarinet.
I was sitting across from him and he began stroking my hair and telling me what a pretty girl I was.
I couldn't tell my parents why I didn't want to join band, cause I didn't have the words, and it was embarrassing, but my gut was clear with me.
I was afraid they would tell me it was nonsense and I was conceited. Disproving that judgement would have made me vulnerable to him.. So I accepted lazy and unambitious as the label,, because I knew that wasn't true, and I could disprove that by being the opposite.
That small brush with his criminal sickness stole some things from me.
It always deeply saddens me to hear these particular types of reports.

Edit: Thank you everyone for your kindness, I'm just fine, and was fortunate to have self-esteem, mentally stable parents, security and attention. The victim that provoked his arrest did not. I think he was honing his approach early on when he came to my home. He taught music from k-8 all those years. I spoke to her brother-in-law this morning to see how she had fared in the ensuing years. He told me the following:
"The girl is a hermit and the house she lives in should be condemned, she is a hoarder just like her mom with junk piled 7 feet high. Never married and stopped playing the flute at 13, dropped out of highschool. No one hears much from her in the last 25 years."
All I really lost was possibly playing the clarinet. She lost everything. Hope, the possibilities of romantic love and family and career, strength, security, self-esteem, and her music. He broke her and she never was able to put herself back together.
Pedophiles and their very deliberate acts ruin their victims.

They also typically have access to a whole school's worth of children, rather than just one class. You're right that you don't hear about a lot of (male) pedophiles in single-classroom teaching positions, and I'm guessing that's part of it.

Research shows that most pedophiles don't ever actually abuse a child... They know it's wrong and can't help the way they are. HOWEVER -downloading & distributing images of child exploitation directly harms children. That's enough of a "criminal record" in my mind.

Adding to my previous comment, I have dealt with people like that, but they have mainly targeted others. They seem like they're everywhere sometimes. So gloomy.

A former Houston ISD music teacher will spend more than a decade behind bars for receiving and possessing child pornography.

Robert Gasper Peri, a former Memorial Elementary School teacher, was sentenced to 135 months in federal prison on Friday, following an investigation by ICE and Homeland Security Investigations - Houston.

Peri, 56, pleaded guilty to the charges Dec. 9, 2020.

As part of his sentencing, Peri will be required to serve 10 years on supervised release following completion of his prison term. He will - restrict his access to children and the internet.

He will also be ordered to register as a sex offender, and pay restitution to the victims.

Forensic analysis resulted in the discovery of 706 images and 143 videos of child pornography including children under the age of five, sadism and masochism.
