A 16-month-old New Port Richey baby is on a ventilator fighting for her life while her 32-year-old father sits behind bars.
According to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, John Michael Budlove was arrested after his baby daughter was taken to the hospital with "significant bruising" to her face and back.
Detectives said Budlove brought the baby to Morton Plant North Bay Hospital Dec. 6 where doctors discovered she was in critical condition with a subdural hematoma, a traumatic brain injury that results in bleeding from the brain.
She was taken to St. Joseph's Children's Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in Tampa by Bay Flight helicopter.
Budlove told detectives that the baby was in his care from about 4:30 p.m. Dec. 5 to 5:30 a.m. Dec. 6 while his wife was at work.
He said on the evening of Dec. 5, he put the baby in a Pack n' Play playpen to sleep and said she had no facial bruises at that time. He said she did make some sounds during the night but that wasn't unusual.
When he woke up the baby the next morning at about 7:30 a.m., he said he noticed the injuries on her face. He told detectives that the baby must have inflicted the bruises herself during the night.
As for the bruising on the back, Budlove told detectives that the baby would place wooden blocks on the floor and then repeatedly drop on top of them, back down, causing the bruising.
Budlove's wife told detectives that the baby had no facial bruising when she went to work Dec. 5. She returned home at 5:30 a.m. the next day but didn't wake the sleeping baby. She said she became aware of the injuries at 7:30 a.m. Dec. 6 after Budlove woke the baby.
When she saw the injuries, she told Budlove to take the baby to the hospital.
Pasco County detectives were called to St. Joseph's to investigate and said the baby was barely moving and would not open her eyes.
Both Budlove and his wife agreed to allow detectives to download messages from their cell phones. In one message Budlove sent to his wife on Oct. 12, he said, "She was laying down. She apparently wants knuckle sandwiches for dinner."
