Day 4 of Sharon Carrillo murder trial started Wednesday morning.

A witness took the stand from the Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit saying she extracted many pictures and videos off multiple cell phones.

A picture was first shown to the jurors of what appeared to be a young girl on her knees on tile floor with her arms in the air. She was only wearing underwear with bruises on her stomach and chest.

A second picture was also shown of the child in the same position with a woman behind her, kneeling with her arms in the air, naked as well.

Three videos were also shown of what was Sharon screaming and acting hysterical. Julio is recording all the videos and can be heard talking to Sharon.

Sharon is heard screaming and begging Julio to let her “calm down.” A small child can be heard crying in the background of one of the videos. Julio is also heard saying to Sharon, “Marissa is behaving and you are not.”

The witness testified she extracted many pictures that showed a young girl with a significant amount of bruises all over her body and a large abrasion with blood coming from it. She also said the child looked very pale in color.
Jurors in the Sharon Carrillo murder trial on Tuesday heard an audiotape of Carrillo describing in detail how she beat her daughter, 10-year-old Marissa Kennedy, to death.

Carrillo and her husband, Julio Carrillo, were charged with depraved indifference murder in the February 2018 death of Kennedy in Stockton Springs.

In the audiotape from a police interview shortly after Marissa’s death, Sharon Carrillo admits to police that she regularly “punished” her daughter by locking her in a closet, striking her in the head, face and torso, and forcing her to kneel while standing on the backs of her legs. She said she and her husband each whipped Kennedy with a belt as many as 15 times each, twice a day.

Sharon Carrillo said the beatings continued for three to four months.

She told police she beat her daughter because she lied, was “disrespectful” and wouldn’t stop screaming.

Kennedy was found beaten to death at a home in Stockton Springs by her mother and stepfather, who tried to make her death look like an accident, prosecutors have said.

Sobbing on the audiotape, Sharon Carrillo repeated, “I shoulda stopped. I shoulda stopped.”

Prosecutor Donald Macomber showed jurors Kennedy’s blood-stained, dog-patterned pajamas and the belt Sharon Carrillo said they beat Kennedy with.

Forensic experts told the jury that human tissue was found on that belt.

Marissa Kennedy told her mother “I feel like I’m dying,” but her parents didn’t seek medical attention until days later, when the 10-year-old finally succumbed to the cumulative effect of months of severe abuse.

Marissa’s mother, Sharon Carrillo, recounted her daughter’s fateful words nearly a week later as she was being interviewed by a Maine State Police detective investigating the girl’s death. The three-hour interview was played Thursday for jurors who will decide whether Carrillo is guilty of murder, as state prosecutors insist, or whether she was a victim of her husband’s domestic abuse who was compelled to give false confessions, as her attorneys argue.

"I should have listened to her when she said, ‘I feel like I’m dying,’” Carrillo said through tears during the videotaped police interview. “Maybe if I had brought her to the hospital, she would never have died.”

About a day after her daughter uttered those fateful words, she began to lose her ability to speak and to walk on her own, Carrillo said. Despite these signs, Sharon Carrillo and husband Julio Carrillo not only failed to seek help for the girl, the couple continued to beat her at their Stockton Springs condominium “because my husband said she was lying about dying,” Sharon Carrillo told police in the interview.

Carrillo’s defense attorneys, however, on Thursday began their attempt to discredit any confessions the mother made to police. They suggested the veteran detectives used their well-honed interrogation techniques to get the woman, who has a low IQ, to admit to participating in abuse committed solely by her husband.

“It was only when you took a confrontational tone and started telling her she wasn’t being honest – and that she needed to agree with you – that she started to agree with you,” Carrillo attorney Christopher MacLean said to Detective Jason Andrews.

On Wednesday, Maine’s chief medical examiner, Dr. Mark Flomenbaum, testified that the 10-year-old’s heart simply “gave out” in response to the extreme pain, stress and injuries she suffered in the final months of her life.

Julio Carrillo is serving a 55-year prison sentence after pleading guilty in July to murdering his stepdaughter.
Sharon Carrillo’s father and stepmother described their daughter as “a child in a woman’s body” who deeply loved Marissa but lost control of her life to a husband who gradually estranged her from her own family. Roseann Kennedy said her stepdaughter – who was diagnosed with a learning disability as a child – was persuaded by Julio Carrillo to falsely agree to accept half of the blame for essentially beating Marissa to death in the final months of her life.

“That was a Julio statement, that did not come out of her mouth without being told by him,” Kennedy testified. “After seeing how many times he had such control over her, I believe that he told her and she had no choice because her brain was gone. Her brain was gone.”

So the idiot needs to be locked up for her own good and for the sake of her surviving children.

According to reports from WMTW, a Stockton Springs woman has been convicted of murder in connection with the death of her 10-year-old daughter last year.

The report said Sharon Carrillo faces 25 years to life in prison for the murder of her daughter, Marissa Kennedy last February. Her husband, Julio Carrillo, pleaded guilty to murdering the girl in an earlier trial and is now serving 55 years in prison.

Sharon Carrillo has been sentenced to 48 years in prison for the murder of her 10-year-old daughter, Marissa Kennedy.

The state had been seeking life in prison, while lawyers for Carrillo sought the minimum 25 years.

Defense attorney Laura Shaw called the ruling disappointing and says her team will be appealing both the sentence and the guilty verdict: “we feel that Sharon Carillo has significant mitigating factors that outweigh the aggravating factors in this case, and her sentence should have been much much lower.”

Shaw declined to discuss specific grounds for appeal.

Disgusting the other victim in this horrible crime has been victimized AGAIN, this time by the govt, and given such an outrageously harsh sentence. There was video proof that she was in fact systematically abused as well, and forced to endure some sickening and damaging acts by the scumbag husband.

Is she culpable, def. But how are you going to give a near equal sentence to someone this clearly damaged?

I agree she was also abused, but willingly beat her own daughter. Left to her own resources, I suspect she would hook up with yet another abuser. I have personally seen 5 real life instances of men with normal intelligence targeting women like this. It makes my skin crawl. The only good thing about this sentence is she can't get pregnant while incarcerated, and then repeat her failing.

Not sure what you’re up to...devil’s advocate, bored, concussion? God knows it’s not misplaced compassion. Regardless same rules apply, she is a grown ass woman who chose this man and had the option of leaving to save not only herself but her daughter. And I wouldn’t put it passed her to have either a) staged that abuse film or b) enjoyed the whole thing

Lawyers Sharon Kennedy appealed to Maine’s highest court for a new trial Tuesday.

Sharon Kennedy's lawyer, Chris MacLean argued the trial court was wrong in denying their motion to suppress statements that she made to police because she has intellectual limitations.

MacLean also argued Kennedy herself was victim of domestic violence at the hands of Carrillo and was under "duress" when she she gave a "false confession" to police.

Prosecutors refuted that assertion. Asst. Attorney General Leanne Robbin said Sharon Kennedy's statements were "voluntary" and called MacLean's claims of abuse "hypothetical."

"Sharon Carrillo is a victim. Marrissa Kennedy is a victim," MacLean told NEWS CENTER Maine following the proceedings. "Sharon Carrillo should not have been convicted of this crime."

The only victim

Maine’s highest court has rejected an appeal from a woman convicted of murder in the death of her 10-year-old daughter.

Sharon Kennedy and her former husband, Julio Carrillo, were both convicted of murder for beatings that led to the death of Marissa Kennedy. Sharon Kennedy was sentenced to 48 years in prison and Carrillo was sentenced to 55 years.

Sharon Kennedy’s attorney argued that jurors weren’t given the right guidance about how to treat testimony about domestic violence that Sharon Kennedy suffered from her husband. The attorney, Chris MacLean, also argued that Sharon Kennedy’s confession should have been suppressed because of the domestic abuse and her intellectual disabilities.

The Maine Supreme Judicial Court ruled on Thursday that the court “acted well within its discretion in applying and weighing the aggravating and mitigating factors” in arriving at Sharon Kennedy’s maximum, 48-year sentence. One justice dissented.

Sharon Carrillo’s attorneys have repeatedly called into question her intellectual abilities and her role in Marissa’s death...

Sharon Carrillo’s father and stepmother described their daughter as “a child in a woman’s body” who deeply loved Marissa but lost control of her life to a husband who gradually estranged her from her own family. Roseann Kennedy said her stepdaughter – who was diagnosed with a learning disability as a child...

I say let her off with time served. Double his.

She is just as guilty and is where she needs to be.

And this monster should never be released.

Just because her parents say she is touched does not mean she should be forgiven for what she did and especially for what she did not do - protect her daughter.

She is just as guilty and is where she needs to be.

well that sentence ends that discussion.
But looking at the picture prison photo, smile and all, I'd sentence her. Doesn't look the least bit learning disabled. At least not like the first photo.

Sharon Kennedy, formerly known as Sharon Carrillo, is appealing her conviction for her role in the death of her 10-year-old daughter.

Kennedy was sentenced to 48 years.
In 2021, Kennedy appealed to have the conviction overturned, arguing she should have been considered a victim of domestic violence and her low IQ allowed her then-husband, Carrillo, to manipulate her. They argued her confession should have been thrown out. The state's highest court rejected that appeal.

This appeal needs to be denied as well.
