Court documents reveal the alleged unhealthy conditions a 3-month-old baby girl of a Bakersfield couple was living in before she died three years ago.

On Tuesday, the baby's mother accepted a plea deal in the case.

The coroner determined Aylin Bautista died in 2015 of natural causes -- bacterial septic shock, caused by bacteria such as E. Coli or listeria.

Court documents indicate living conditions likely played a role in the infant's health. Investigators noted spoiled milk, rat droppings and cockroaches all over the house, even in the baby's diaper and car seat.

The baby's mother Erika Cervantes, took a plea deal Tuesday, pleading no contest to one charge of child abuse.

The baby's father, Jesus Bautista, is scheduled to go to trial next year.

The sentencing for Cervantes was postponed to Jan. 5. At that time, if the case involving her co-defendant has been resolved, she will be sentenced. If it hasn’t been resolved, her sentencing will be postponed and she will be called to testify at Bautista’s trial.
Erika Cervantes pleaded no contest in 2018 to one count of willful cruelty to a child. In 2015, Cervantes’ daughter, Aylin Bautista, was taken to Memorial Hospital, where investigators say they responded to a report of child abuse.

The infant was having seizures and difficulty breathing. Her condition worsened, and she was taken to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera, where she died shortly after. The baby’s father, Jesus Bautista is charged with four counts of willful cruelty to a child.

Erika Cervantes was sentenced to time served this week and Jesus Bautista to 180 days in jail, according to court records.

Both had pleaded no contest to a single count of willful cruelty to a child while three other counts were dismissed.

They must also serve four years’ probation, court records say.
