GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -
"It's been an extremely difficult day for family and friends as well as officers. So many people were crying, upset as the body of 5-year-old Janaya Thompson was removed from an abandoned trailer. Coroner Gary Hargrove said Janaya's body was found in a bathroom.

"This tragedy has rocked the foundation of our community."
With those words, Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes said what so many in Gulfport and on the entire Gulf Coast were feeling Thursday as news broke about the death of 5-year-old Janaya Thompson.
Dozens of neighbors, friends, and family members gathered Thursday morning at the abandoned trailer where the little girl's body was found.
Councilwoman Ella Holmes-Hines was among those offering support to the Boykin and Thompson families. In a statement to the media, she asked that everyone "keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they go through the unspeakable heartbreak of losing a child."
"It is an unspeakable tragedy for the family and our entire community," Holmes-Hines said. "The family is grateful for the family, friends and neighbors who contributed in the search efforts."
Councilman Myles Sharp represents the area of Gulfport where the family lives.
"The tragic events of today leave me searching for the words or a way to comfort the Thompson family after their loss," Sharp said. "Hug your children and all of your loved ones an extra time tonight, and be mindful of the loss to the Thompsons and our community today."
Mayor Hewes promised that the questions surrounding Janaya's death will not go unanswered.
"We have confidence in the compassion and professionalism of our police officers, and will devote all resources at our disposal to the solving of this crime," Hewes said.
Councilman Sharp agreed. "I have full faith that our police department will not rest until we have answers to all the questions that burden our hearts tonight."
Mourners were planning to gather at The Palms apartment complex Thursday night at 8:30pm for a candlelight vigil. Teddy bears and balloons were already being left near the spot where Janaya was found, as a shocked community tries its best to grieve.

Harrison County Fire Marshal Pat Sullivan said four dogs and six people from Gulf Coast Search and Rescue helped in the search efforts. Authorities said the dogs were used for most of the night and returned to the search around daylight after police developed a new plan.
Gulfport Police Sgt. Damon McDaniel said the search dogs eventually alerted officers to the location of the body using the scent of Janaya's clothes.
"This is a tragedy, not a story," Gulfport Police Chief Leonard Papania said as he briefed news crews at Bel-Aire Elementary Thursday morning.
Around noon, the coroner removed a child's body from the trailer. Shortly after that, Coroner Hargrove confirmed everyone's worst fears.
Shocked family members and friends gathered around the trailer on Whitney Drive Wednesday; Many tried to console Janaya's dad, Jarmal Thompson. He told us he was trying to remain strong.
Thompson said during the search last night, a red haired man picked him up, telling him he wanted to help. He said they drove around the neighborhood looking for his daughter.
Thompson believes that man is a prime suspect in the death of his daughter.
"I lost my best friend today and how the situation is, I'm pretty sure to knowing what happened. That's what's upsetting me. A sick person, they always going to be sick. They can't help that," Thompson said.
Thompson said the red haired man lives in the Palms Apartments and his balcony overlooks the kids' playground.
"He basically knew my daughter's everyday life, but I didn't pay it no mind. It didn't catch my attention until the bite marks and scratches were brought to my attention," said Thompson.
Gulfport Police interviewed the man in question, but couldn't comment any further.
Support for the family started the moment Janaya went missing Wednesday night. More than 100 people took part the desperate overnight search for the child.
Friends say Janaya just graduated from the Isiah Fredericks Head Start Center in May. They described her as a happy, social little girl.
"It's very sad that someone would do such a tragic thing to a child. She's very innocent, loving. You know, she stayed at my house many a nights. I dated her grandfather, and so she was at my house all the time," said Shonda Reid. "Her and my 5-year-old grew up together, and it breaks my heart to have to experience this first hand. It's very saddening."
Right now, police say they do not have a suspect in the case. They do want to thank the more than 100 people who turned out all night and Thursday morning to search for Janaya.
Authorities say they have not developed any suspects at this time. If you have any information about this case, call Gulfport Police at (228) 868-5959."

I haven't been here in a couple of months. I just needed a break for a little while from all the horror. I am sad to say that that same horror right here in my little nook of the world was what brought me back. Just 5 years old. Lord I hope she did not suffer.

not unusual at all for the perp to put themselves in the middle of the investigation...they thrive on the excitement of it all somehow. How heart wrenching for this father to now know that this man is probably the one that did this to his little girl and he rode beside him searching for her. RIP little one. You are loved.

Yes, @Robynne. This one. Every so often I just get... I don't know... defeated? This one sent me there again. I just don't understand. Humans are evil. But why? We are fixable. Somehow, some way. True, some are only fixable with extreme lead poisoning.
Following this case for the missing person page I run, well... Dammit. She was only 5. Excited for kindergarten. Her main concern was dolls, clothes and school supplies. And some asshole .... probably brutalized her.

Janaya Thompson
"GULFPORT, Mississippi -- Five-year-old Janaya Makayia Thompson, whose body was found Thursday morning inside the bathroom of an abandoned mobile home in Gulfport, died from suffocation, authorities said this morning during a press conference.
Two persons of interest are in custody, Gulfport Police Chief Leonard Papania said during the 9:30 a.m. press conference.

Alberto Julio Garcia, left, and Julian Casper Gray

Although 31-year-old Julian Casper Gray and 29-year-old Alberto Julio Garcia are both considered persons of interest related to the child's death, they have been arrested on separate offenses.
Gray, of 10480 Klein Rd., is accused of the rape and sexual battery of an adult female acquaintance that occurred in April at his apartment, Papania said.
Garcia, also of 10480 Klein Rd., is accused of a residential burglary that occurred July 12 at 14475 Whitney Dr., the same address where Thompson's body was found.
The men are of interest in Thompson's death "because of materials that have been gleaned in this investigation," Papania said. "Obviously this is an ongoing investigation."
Gray and Garcia were processed and transported to the Harrison County Adult Detention Facility, Papania said.
"There is a lot of forensic examination that will have a lot of bearing on this," Papania said.
"Officers, detectives and agents have worked non-stop, around the clock following every lead," he said. "We want to bring closure for this family. We are parents also."
Another individual who was heavily talked about by members of the child's family and on mainstream and social media was interviewed and examined, Papania said.
The man had volunteered to help find the girl and even drove members of her family around in his vehicle, where family members said they found a hair barrette.
Initial reports of suspicious scratches on the man's hands and arms were inaccurate, Papania said.
"He is not a suspect," he said, noting the man was fully cooperative with authorities.
Thompson was missing for about 12 hours before being found at the trailer on Whitney Drive, just north of her home apartment complex where she went missing at approximately 8:29 p.m. Wednesday.
The child was last seen in the parking lot near her family's first-floor apartment at The Palms Apartments, 10471 Three Rivers Rd.
She was found with the aid of a search dog at about 8:45 a.m.
Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove said an autopsy revealed she died from asphyxiation.
"I'm not going to comment further on any other findings at this time because it's all part of the investigation," Hargrove said.
Hargrove said he identified the child based on a photo that was provided.
Anyone with any information on this incident is urged to contact the Gulfport Police Department at 228-868-5959."

Why wasn't he taken off the streets in April or May? It might have saved that beautiful baby's life. :(
Ugh, I only skimmed, definitely wish you hadn't pointed it out to me.:( I'm going to guess that the rape/sexual battery is a he said/she said and maybe wasn't taken seriously because she was an acquaintance and it happened at his apartment. Regardless, there are some investigators out there who should be kicking themselves over the missed opportunity to prevent crime.

I am wondering if perhaps the person who is accusing him of rape back in April did not come forward until recently. It shows the offense date as 4-28-14, but he was only arrested for it on 7-17-14. Can't imagine why he would not have been arrested before now if the charges were filed, unless they could not find him or did not put much effort into finding him. I hate to accuse the police of not doing their job to the best of their ability, but sadly that does happen sometimes. I really hope that is not the case here.

Oh dear Lord. Oh my goodness gracious a fucking live. I just can't even process this shit right now. @Valasca I love you for what you do hon. I know this shit can get to the best of us. I'm here everyday and yet this has my stomach in knots thinking about just how sick sick SICK you would have to be to do this to a 5yo baby.
If they are the right creeps for this then I hope nothing less than death for the both of them.

It's tough just doing a page. I can't imagine being a detective. I sure as Hell can't imagine losing someone to this kind of brutality.

I'm leaning toward the police not diligently looking for these guys. They were both living in the same place.

Although we don't know for sure if it was brought to the attention of authorities back in April or not, I'm inclined to lean towards them dragging their feet. All too often these kinds of cases get put on the "back burner " when we all know they escalate. Same goes for people that abuse animals. IT'S CALLED A WARNING SIGN FOR A REASON.

This poor girl. This poor Family. I want to slice the person's penis who did this slowly with a paring knife and feed it to them.

Alberto Julio Garcia is charged with capital murder in the death of 5-year-old Janaya Thompson. (Photo source: Harrison County Sheriff's Dept.)

A man who was arrested last week for burglary is now charged with the capital murder of 5-year-old Janaya Thompson. Alberto Garcia has been in the Harrison County Adult Detention Center since last Friday, and will continue to be held without bond.
Gulfport Police Chief Leonard Papania said one week ago, Janaya was brought to Whitney Drive where she was sexually assaulted and strangled. Her body was found the next morning inside an abandoned trailer. Papania said Garcia lived at The Palms apartments where Janaya was last seen. He called the little girl's tragic death "a crime of opportunity."
The chief said Julian Gray, who was also arrested last week, remains a person of interest. Papania said evidence collected at the scene of the crime must still be analyzed, and could result in more charges.
Chief Papania said just before announcing the new charges to the public, he met with Janaya's parents to update them on the work of his investigators.
"Justice for Janaya remains of utmost importance," Chief Papania said.
If you have any information that could help investigators with this case, call Gulfport Police at (228) 868-5959.
As for the suspect, Garcia will make his first appearance in court Friday morning.

Alberto Garcia appeared emotionless as he was escorted by sheriff's deputies to the front of the jail courtroom Friday morning in shackles and a jumpsuit. The lack of emotion was no surprise to Gulfport Police Chief Leonard Papania.

He called the little girl's tragic death "a crime of opportunity."

"He's a criminal," Papania said.
Garcia is charged with sexually assaulting and killing 5-year-old Janaya Thompson. Court documents obtained by WLOX News state Garcia implicated himself in both crimes and admitted he tried to destroy evidence.
The documents also say that during an interview with police, Garcia gave details about the crimes that only the perpetrator and detectives would know.
Garcia went on to tell police his DNA and fingerprints would be found at the trailer where Janaya was found dead. He said he burglarized the trailer on July 12, and stole two jackets, a pornographic magazine, a movie disk and blackout curtains. Garcia is also facing separate charges for burglary.
Papania and one of his investigators sat in the front row of the courtroom on Friday to hear what the judge and Garcia had to say.
"It's an important case," Papania said. "I have talked to that family, and it's a special family and that was a special little girl. I told them that we would seek justice for her, and I'm going to follow this case all the way through."
Papania said charging Garcia is just the first step in seeking justice for young Janaya, a child the whole community is mourning.
Candles, stuffed animals, cards and balloons surround the apartment where Janaya once called home and outside the trailer where her lifeless body was discovered.
"We are still continuing to move forward in this investigation," Papania said. "Obviously, Julian Gray remains a person of interest. There is a lot of evidence being processed now and still being collected so we continue to move forward."
Gray remains behind bars on unrelated charges of sexual battery and rape. According to court papers, the incidents happened in March and April, and both charges were filed by the same victim.

Bastard !! I refuse to look at his fat smug face as that's the last sight that baby girl saw!

He took and ruined a little girls life and her families lives too. Even ruined a little community.

All for a few moments of his perverted pleasure.

Put him in a room with Janayas Mother and Father and lock the door , for because of this cunt already they are serving a life sentence so let them dish out his punishment....Justice will be done.

I almost didn't read the article when I saw that beautiful little girls picture. But, I felt like I owed it to her. To hear her.
What bothers me a great deal when I hear about these cases is when they mention bite marks. That's what animals do. The male animal is just clawing and biting in order to get his needs met. That's what these fuckers do. Just like animals.
I don't think these pigs are going to escape justice this time. That whole town is out for blood. I sincerely hope they get it.

Gruesome and disturbing new details were revealed Friday morning in a pre-trial hearing for the man accused of killing 5-year-old Janaya Thompson.

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -
Family members, friends and concerned community members poured into the Harrison County courthouse Friday under tightened security seeking justice for Janaya Thompson

Silence swept over the crowd as the capital murder suspect, Alberto Garcia, was brought inside. Once Garcia was seated, Gulfport Police Detective Samuel Jewell took the stand.
As Jewell told the court all the gruesome details of the crime Garcia is accused of, the suspect sat emotionless on one side of the room. Janaya's loved ones wiped away tears on the other side of the court.
"We found Janaya Thompson with her back was against the west wall," Jewell said. "She was hung with what we know now as two pairs of socks and that was attached to a metal bar in a small window attached to above the tub. She was suspended."
In a matter of hours, the detective testified they were at Garcia's apartment asking to speak with him.
"Alberto Garcia started telling detectives, 'Hey, my fingerprints might be in that trailer where the little girl was found,'" Jewell said.
Jewell testified Garcia told police he went in the trailer days before the murder and took several items. At that point during the questioning, Jewell said Garcia was read his Miranda rights and was arrested for burglary. But Jewell said Garcia continued talking to investigators.
Jewell said Garcia told investigators he was at his apartment playing video games the night Janaya was murdered and he may have blacked out. He said he smelled feces on himself and does not know what happened and went and took a shower. After Garcia told detectives that story, Detective Jewell said Garcia began asking investigators questions.
"He asked about the evidence they had and asked did it point to him being responsible for Janaya's death," Jewell said.
After asking those questions, Jewell said Garcia asked for an attorney and investigators stopped asking Garcia questions.
Five days later, Jewell said he received a handwritten note from the jail written by Garcia saying he wanted to talk. Jewell said Garcia told him he was worried about seeing his mother and about the burglary charge against him. Jewell said he read Garcia his Miranda rights again and Garcia kept talking. This time Jewell said Garcia's story changed.
"He said he went to the door and said Julian Gray was standing there," Jewell testified. "He said that Gray said he had an incident with a little girl and that he needed help."
Jewell said Garcia told police he went to the trailer with Gray and saw Janaya face down in the bedroom on a green chair. Jewell testified Garcia then told them he helped Gray try and rinse evidence off of Janaya and hang the young girl over the bathtub.
After tying the socks around Janaya's neck, Garcia told police he went back to his apartment and took a shower.
"He heard a knock at the door and that was one of the family members that was familiar with him saying that Janaya Thompson was missing," Jewell testified about what Garcia said. "He actually went out with either the family or other folks and said he actually pretended to look for her."
Detective Jewell told the court Garcia's stories are not adding up with the evidence.
"We received a preliminary DNA test from the anal swab taken from Janaya Thompson's autopsy," Jewell said. "The result is that Gray's DNA was not present, but Garcia's DNA was present.
Detective Jewell told the court there are more than 100 pieces of evidence at the FBI crime lab right now and investigators are waiting to get more results back to see if Julian Gray will also be charged with Janaya's murder. Currently, Gray is in jail on unrelated charges.
Janaya's parents were not in the courtroom Friday. A friend of the family told WLOX they were too distraught to sit through the hearing. Gulfport Chief of Police Leonard Papaina was amongst those in the courtroom.
"You heard the details today. It's a painful thing and it's just something we have to continue to seek justice," Papania said. "We still an open investigation and we still have some work to do."
Papania said he was not surprised to see standing room only in the courtroom.
"It's an extended family and it's our community and, again, I just tell you my heart goes out to them and I'm proud of how they are doing," Papania said.
Harrison County Prosecuting Attorney Herman Cox said he will pursue the death penalty for Garcia.
"In my 35 years of practice of law," Cox said, "I've never seen a more brutal and senseless killing. This defendant is just pure evil and the death penalty is justified in this case. I think the only proper penalty in a case like this would be the death sentence, but that's up to a jury, of course, to decide."

Hope if they got multiple perpetrators they can manage to kill all of them instead of offering one a plea deal in order to testify against the other.

It's nice to see the entire community standing behind this family and being a voice for Janaya.
I hope someone strings this fucker up by his shit stained skivvies.

January 25, 2017

Wednesday brought closure to so many people, but the past three days have also opened a lot of wounds. The horrific details of Janaya Thompson’s rape and murder have been replayed in court over and over, but it all served a purpose. That was to bring justice for Janaya.

"We were hoping for justice, and I think that's what was given today," said Angela Hinton, who was Janaya's cousin.

Around 2:45 p.m., Judge Lisa Dodson sentenced Janaya Thompson's killer to death. He was asked if he wanted to make any final statements to the court. Alberto Garcia declined.

"Just watching him show no remorse at all, you know he hasn't shed a tear these three days," said Gretta Hinton, who was Janaya's aunt.

Emotion flooded the courtroom during the three-day sentencing hearing. Garcia's defense attorney even got emotional during closing arguments after saying, "I know the community has called for Alberto's head on a platter. I know they've also called for mine."

Dodson took a little more than three hours to deliberate the sentence. Before pronouncing the sentence, she said, "This is one of the worst I've ever seen in terms of what happened to this child."
