A Republic Police Department investigation has led to several felony child sex crime charges against a 26-year-old Springfield man.

Greene County prosecutors on Monday charged Dakota J. Trogdon with seven felonies related to statutory rape and child molestation.

According to court records, police identified three underage victims during a 2022 investigation.
According to police, the incidents all happened in 2018, but an investigation that started soon after that did not come together. But police were interviewing Trogdon again in 2022. They say he was already a registered sex offender, but disclosed other victims that weren't yet known.

Two victims were under the age of 17, while the other was under 12, which are key ages in Missouri law. Police followed up with interviews with the two older victims, while the youngest was interviewed by the Child Advocacy Center. Trogdon's statements seemed to match those of the victims, according to court records.
In October, a treatment team reported to police that it thought Trogdon was not a candidate for outpatient treatment as he was too high a risk to reoffend.

"Due to the pervasiveness of Mr. Trogdon's sexual offending pattern and inability to fully determine the victim profile and offense patterns, it is recommended that Mr. Trogdon be referred to the Greene County Prosecuting Attorney's office for assessment of appropriateness for civil commitment through the Missouri Department of Mental Health due to risk to public safety."
A Republic Police investigator, in his probable cause statement to prosecutors, seemed to agree.

"I have reasonable grounds to believe Trogdon is a danger to any child he is left alone around," the report states.
Of the seven charges Trogdon faces, the most serious is first degree statutory rape with a victim under the age of 12.
He also faces two charges of statutory sodomy with a victim under 12, three charges of child molestation with a victim under 12, and one charge of second degree statutory rape.

A Springfield man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for statutory rape and statutory sodomy.
Dakota Trogdon was originally charged with three counts of child molestation and another count of statutory sodomy in addition to one count of first-degree statutory rape, second-degree statutory rape, and statutory sodomy, but those charges were dismissed when Trogdon pleaded guilty on January 26 to the other three counts after an agreement with prosecutors.
According to the probable cause statement, Trogdon told authorities that he met one of his victims, a 15-year-old girl, at a Walmart. He originally told investigators that the girl was 16 years old and he was 20 years old when they met, but investigators later learned that Trogdon was 21 and the victim was 15 when he raped her.

Another victim, according to the probable cause statement, was eight years old when Trogdon raped her. The third victim was 16 years old when Trogdon sodomized her, according to the probable cause statement.
