Eduardo Gamez faces two counts of chronic neglect of a child and was ordered to stand trial on Thursday.

Jamie Schrank is also charged with chronic neglect of a child in connection with the July death of a toddler who was in Schrank and Gamez’s care who suffered extensive bruises. She has pleaded not guilty but no trial date has been set.

Neither have been charged specifically with the death of the boy, however.

In the complaint, doctors say the bruises left on the boy were point to "rough handling," and doctors suspect the boy was being abused and neglected. It happened when Gamez and Schrank were babysitting the three-year-old boy while his mom was at work. According to the criminal complaint, the two smoked meth while the boy and their five-year-old son were in the home July 28. The boy was taken to the hospital for internal and external injuries, where he died later that night. The complaint also says their son had bruises that indicate abuse and neglect.

An autopsy on a 3-year-old boy who died at a hospital last summer shows he died from complications from blunt force injuries to his abdomen.

Manitowoc Police say the two adults who were babysitting him, Eduardo Gomez and Jamie Schrank, are now facing charges of party to the crime of repeated acts of physical abuse to a child causing death. It's a felony charge that carries life imprisonment.

The toddler was brought to a hospital on July 28 with bruises on his chest, abdomen, back and legs and internal injuries. He underwent emergency surgery and was transferred to Children's Hospital, where he died.

Police investigators determined Gamez and Schrank were using meth while they were supervising the boy, who was no relation to the couple, while his mother worked.

The couple was also watching their own 5-year-old child. That child was checked by doctors, who found bruises on his legs and torso.

Eduardo Gamez, entered an Alford plea on a felony charge of chronic neglect of a child causing death during his plea in Manitowoc County Circuit Court.

Gamez was arrested in July 2018 on suspicion of child abuse after a 3-year-old child died of severe external and internal injuries that same month. Jamie Schrank, a 39-year-old woman, was also charged with felony child abuse from that same incident.

According to the criminal complaint, Gamez and Schrank were using meth while babysitting the victim and their own 5-year-old child at their Manitowoc home July 28, 2018. Police were called to a local hospital for a report of a toddler being treated for severe external and internal injuries. The child died later that night.
Gamez’s Alford plea allows him to plead no contest while still maintaining his innocence. l.

Gamez was also charged with two felony counts of chronic neglect of a child and one felony count of possession of methamphetamine. Those charges were dismissed, but will be read in for sentencing as part of Gamez’s plea agreement.

District Attorney Jacalyn LaBre said she will recommend 20 years in state prison — 12 years of confinement and eight years of extended supervision — as part of that same plea agreement.

Gamez is scheduled to appear in court on April 22 for sentencing.

Schrank is facing five felony charges including abuse of a child causing death and chronic neglect of a child. She is scheduled for a telephone conference in the Manitowoc County Circuit Court on April 6
