A St Louis animal rescue shelter on Monday received a heart-wrenching letter from a woman saying she was losing her battle with cancer and pleading to find a new home for her beloved dog, Shell.

The next day, police were dispatched to a burning apartment in the St Louis suburb of Affton where they found the body of Shell's owner, 46-year-old Crystal Chrisp.

They said the woman had shot herself and her death has been ruled a suicide. The cause of the fire that broke out inside her unit remains under investigation.

Neighboring apartments were evacuated by firefighters, but no one else was injured, reported St Louis Post-Dispatch.

Shell was not in the apartment at the time of her owner's suicide because Chrisp had dropped her off at Stray Rescue of St. Louis the previous day, along with her handwritten note.

The letter, dated September 19, read: 'I [am] writing you cause I need you to take my dog, Shell. My mother adopted Shell from Stray Rescue around 2009-2010.... In 2012, she had a massive stroke [and] now has Alzheimer's. So in 2012 Shell came to live with me. I've been fighting cancer for a few months and If you're reading this I lost my battle. I need for my baby girl to be taking [sic] care of in a home with one person.

'She is a very sweet girl. She's been [through] a lot so she has trouble with trust in the beginning. She loves to cuddle but don't like to be carried. She's very smart...In these days all I do is worry about what's going to happen to her. I love this girl, she is my daughter.'

I'll take them. Prepared properly, they are awesome. I'll take the sheep too. If they're too old to eat, I'll trade them to a farmer for some lambs.
There's a slaughter house close to me. I'm sure the lambs would end up there. They've had a happy time as my pets.

So you have seen a report confirming she lit the apartment on fire? NB: The story as posted said the cause of the fire was still under investigation.

Do you have a link to that report?

A senior dog given to an animal rescue with a heartbreaking letter from her owner has been adopted.

According to Stray Rescue of St. Louis, a woman saw Shell on the news and filled out an application. They said the two hit it off and are now “inseparable.”
