A South St. Paul woman has been charged with felony child neglect and felony child endangerment after her 10-day-old son suffered fractures to his eye sockets and bleeding on the front and back of his brain, according to court documents filed in Dakota County District Court.

Jennifer A. Pickar, 30, is being held in the county jail in lieu of $20,000 bail. The criminal complaint told this story:

When Pickar went to the emergency room of a St. Paul hospital on the afternoon of Jan. 1 to seek treatment for tremors, a nurse there noticed that the boy, born Dec. 21, appeared to have two black eyes. The baby, identified in the complaint by the initials J.K.K., was taken to the intensive care unit at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis, where the extent of his injuries became clear. His condition worsened to the point that he needed a breathing tube and a shunt was surgically inserted into his skull to reduce swelling.
[...]

Pickar told authorities on Jan. 1 that she noticed the bruises to the baby's eyes when she woke up about 7:30 a.m. with the baby tucked under her left arm. She said he looked fine when she gave him a bottle about 3 that morning, then fell asleep. She denied inflicting the injuries.

Two days later, Pickar told investigators that the baby was crying and was tucked under her right arm when she woke up. She said she has a history of seizures and believed that she "must have suffered a seizure [during the night] where she hit herself and J.K.K. on the metal crib that was next to the bed," the complaint said.

Pickar pointed out bruising on her face and right arm that hadn't been visible on Jan. 1. She had no explanation for why the baby had bruises on his left ear if his right side hit the crib. She didn't explain why she believed it was safe for her son to sleep in her bed if she had a history of seizures.

More surgery is expected to repair the broken bones, the complaint said. The baby's condition was unclear late Monday, the county attorney's office said.

The child also is expected to have "significant deficits" because of the injuries, according to the charges. Doctors said the baby would have died without medical care and that his injuries are consistent with a "significant" or "multiple" impacts to the baby's face.

The child's ear also appeared to have been pinched, the complaint said.

Pickar told authorities she awoke to the baby crying in her left armpit, the charges said. She said she didn't injure him and couldn't remember anything harming him.

The child's father, who was working overnight, told police he returned to the home at 1 p.m. and noticed Pickar shaking. He also saw bruises around the baby's eyes.
[...]

Pickar's mother later told police that her daughter said she injured the baby when she had a seizure and dropped him, the charges said. Pickar's mother said her daughter later told her that she rolled on the baby in bed during a seizure.

Each charge carries up to five years in prison.

Pickar's criminal history includes felony assault in 2011, two counts of misdemeanor assault in 2011, and felony theft and drug possession in 2008, according to state records.

Whatever the hell the ugly bitch did to him, she deserves to have him taken away from her. She is obviously not a good mother.

I will say this for her though, at least she took him to the hospital right away. She didn't let the poor little baby die, then try to make excuses.

She only took him in because the nurse noticed the baby's black eyes and told her to. She went in for HER OWN "shaking" and didn't say "boo" about the baby's condition. Thankfully, the nurse saw the baby. If the baby had stayed out with someone else in the waiting room (or been left home), it may have not been noticed.

Exactly and she probably only did it then because she figured the nurse would report her either way so she might as well look like she tried. How do you get that tired of your baby after only 10 days wtf... ridiculous.

St. Paul, MN - When Jennifer A. Pickar, 30, went to a St. Paul emergency room on the afternoon of Jan. 1 to seek treatment for tremors, a nurse attending to Pickar noticed her 10-day-old baby boy appeared to have two black eyes. After examination, the baby was reportedly taken to the intensive care unit at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis, where an examination revealed the extent of his injuries. It turns out that the baby – for whom treatment was not being sought by the mother – also had bruises on his left ear, fractures on the bones around his eyes, and bleeding in the front and back of his brain. The baby needed a breathing tube and a shunt was surgically inserted into*his skull to reduce swelling. According to court documents, the 10-day-old underwent surgery to repair the broken facial bones, but more will be required. The baby’s current condition is unknown.*Court documents say that the child is expected to have “significant deficits” because of the injuries. Doctors reportedly said the baby would have died without medical care and that his injuries are consistent with a “significant” or “multiple” impacts to the baby’s face. But, of course, there is a simple explanation for all of this… Pickar told authorities on Jan. 1 that she woke up about 7:30 a.m. with the baby tucked under her left arm. She said she has a history of seizures and believed that she “must have suffered a seizure [during the night] where she hit herself and the baby on the metal crib that was next to the bed.” She didn’t explain to investigators why she believed it was safe for her son to sleep in her bed if she had a history of seizures. Pickar’s mother would tell police that Pickar said she injured the baby when she had a seizure and dropped him, the charges said. Pickar’s mother also reportedly said her daughter later told her that she rolled on the baby in bed during a seizure. It’s been a rough ten days… According to state records, Pickar’s criminal history includes felony assault in 2011, two counts of misdemeanor assault in 2011, and felony theft and drug possession in 2008, according to state records. Pickar has been charged with felony child neglect and felony child endangerment. Each charge carries up to five years in prison. Pickar is currently being held in theKeep Reading...

I'm just surprised she was able to get laid. It's obvious the seizures had nothing to do with the poor baby's injuries because her story kept changing. Thank goodness the nurse noticed the baby!

Thanks for pointing it out  I had misread the original article.

I love sleeping with my babies, but I can't for the life of me understand how she could do this if she has seizure disorder. Besides, IMO the injuries just don't jibe with the seizure story.
