“She always told me she doesn’t like to be with her stepmother. Sometimes she got beatings from her. Sometimes she grabbed her, threw her on the bed. I’m not thinking she’s going to kill her.”
- quote from Ashdeep's uncle

The family knew, they witnessed the abuse, Ashdeep told them she was scared, yet nobody did anything, and now it's too late. She was failed by the people who should have been protecting her!

Little 9yo Ashdeep Kaur came to the US from India with her father with dreams for a 'better life'...

--- Enter wicked stepmother Arjun Samdhi Pardas, and a couple months later Ashdeep's battered, naked body was discovered strangled in the bathtub of their tiny crowded apartment.
The little girl was tossed around and hit — but adults in 9-year-old Ashdeep Kaur’s life didn’t think too much about it until she was found dead in an empty bathtub.

“That is how we grew up in Punjab. I was thinking, ‘It’s normal, it’s OK. It’s family,’ ” said Ashdeep’s uncle, Manjinder Singh.

Ashdeep’s stepmom, Arjun Samdhi Pardas, 55, has been charged with murder for allegedly strangling the girl....
...
The girl from Punjab, India, had been entrusted to Pardas’ care, even though relatives knew Ashdeep had accused her of abuse.

“She always told me she doesn’t like to be with her stepmother. Sometimes she got beatings from her,” Singh said. “Sometimes she grabbed her, threw her on the bed. I’m not thinking she’s going to kill her.”

Pardas was nowhere to be found when a housemate discovered Ashdeep’s body Friday evening in the bathtub of the family’s home
...
Ashdeep’s father, Sukjinder Singh, 35, pale from grief, had to be held up by relatives on Saturday as he left the 102nd Precinct station house.

The day before, upon learning his daughter was dead, Singh collapsed on the sidewalk.

Another relative... was stunned by Ashdeep’s killing.

“She came here for a bright future, you know?” he said. “She was going to go to school and everything. She didn’t deserve it. It’s heartbreaking. I still can’t believe that she’s gone.”
...
Ashdeep and her father arrived in the United States three months ago, police sources said.

Pardas seemed “very quiet, very nice, always smiling,” said her landlord, Sucha Singh.

Other neighbors said the tragic girl and her family lived in cramped conditions, sharing a two-bedroom apartment with another couple — the ones who found the girl’s body in the bathroom.

A 9-year-old Queens girl whose bruised, naked body was found in a bathtub was strangled by her wicked stepmom...Arjun Samdhi Pardas was charged Saturday with killing Ashdeep Kaur in the bathroom of their Richmond Hill home,
Relatives said Ashdeep feared her stepmother, who comes from Guyana, and said the woman had hit the girl. They hadn’t thought the punishments rose to the level of abuse.

On Friday, a woman who shares part of the 112th St. home — including the bathroom — told Ashdeep’s dad that Pardas and his daughter had gone into the bathroom together, according to relatives.

The stepmother emerged alone and, before leaving the house with her two grandchildren, told the housemate the girl was still inside, taking a shower.

When the housemate went to use the bathroom about 6 p.m. she discovered the girl’s lifeless body in the bathtub.
...
The stepmother did whatever she did with her in the house,” another relative said. “The dead body was in the bathroom, and she ran away.”

Two children found with Pardas when she was arrested were put in the care of city child protective services...

A neighbor said Pardas had lived on the street for years, but didn’t get along with her family.
An autopsy was scheduled to determine how Ashdeep died.

Manjinder Singh was beside himself with grief and struggling with regret that he didn’t do more to protect his niece.

“She had been living with us two or three days, sleeping over,” he said, his voice cracking. “I shouldn’t have dropped her off. Her father said drop her home, and the second day, she’s dead.”

I've noticed that some of the articles online have the stepmonster's name spelled differently as well as the first & last name reversed & even a completely different name? Not sure why that is or even which is correct, but here is what I've found.

The 2 sources I linked above have her name listed as: Arjun Samdhi Pardas

But NYam , CBSNY , & several other local sources have her name as:
Shamdai Arjun, 55, was charged with murder by strangulation after Ashdeep Kaur, 9, was found dead in their Richmond Hill home on Friday evening.

Then NBC NY has it totally different!:
The stepmother, Shadai Argu, 55, was reported missing soon after friends kicked down the locked door of the bathroom Friday evening and discovered the body.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Update:

The stepmother (whatever her damn name is!) her ex-husband has just been arrested:

Raymond Narayan, the former husband of Arjun Samdhi Pardas, was charged with obstructing governmental administration

The ex-husband of the woman charged with strangling her 9-year-old stepdaughter to death in Queens has been arrested for trying to shield the woman from police after the horrific murder, police and prosecutors said on Sunday.

Raymond Narayan, 65, the former husband of Arjun Samdhi Pardas, 55, was charged with obstructing governmental administration for refusing to allow police into his South Ozone Park home, where the alleged killer stepmom had holed up on Saturday,
...
Police charged Pardas with the murder of little Ashdeep Kaur. She was found dead, curled in the fetal position in the bathtub ...

When cops tracked Paradas down to Narayan’s South Ozone Park home on 134th St., Narayan refused to come out or open his door to them for over an hour, Brown’s office said..

Pardas and Narayan were awaiting arraignment Sunday afternoon...
If found guilty, Narayan faces a $1,000 fine and up to a year in jail.

Additional details from the District Attorney:

"This is a horrifying case of a child, a defenseless 9-year-old, who was left in the care of her stepmother who allegedly strangled her to death,” Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said in a statement.

“Her actions, if true, are beyond comprehension and must be severely punished," he said.

... a neighbor asked Pardas about the girl when she saw the stepmom leaving the apartment with her ex-husband Raymond Narayan and her grandchildren around 5:30 p.m. the day of the killing.
Pardas told her the girl was taking a shower, police said.

But the neighbor’s concern only elevated as she noticed the bathroom light had been on since 11 a.m., the D.A.’s office said.

The neighbor then called Ashdeep's father, Sukhjinder Singh, who told her to break the door down. That's when the neighbor and her brother, who helped breach the bathroom, made the tragic discovery around 6 p.m., police said.

The girl had only lived with her father and stepmom a short while. Ashdeep emigrated.. from India, where she lived with her mother, just three months ago, relatives said. But in that limited time it had already become apparent to Ashdeep's uncle that Pardas was abusing her.

"(Ashdeep) told me she got beat up by her," the uncle, Manjinder Singh, said on Saturday.
...
If convicted, Parabas faces up to 25 years-to-life in prison.
http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/queens/woman-charged-killing-stepdaughter-queens-arrested-article-1.2760004

I also read somewhere (I couldn't find it again to link it) that Ashdeep's mother & father are divorced & she had been living with her mother in India. Recently the mother agreed to allow Ashdeep to move with her father to the US because she wanted her daughter to have better schooling & more opportunities.

So dad heads to the US, hooks up with a homeless bitch who's old enough to be his mother-- they move into a 2 bedroom apartment with another couple, and 3 mos later poor little girl is murdered! So much for a better life.:pout:

Isn't it funny that this morning I read a story and posted a feel good thread concerning a kind act by strangers for a woman they never knew in life. I basked all day long in the glow reading that article generated.

This evening that glow left abruptly upon reading about this wicked step monster and a father that sacrificed his daughter by calling her home knowing the fear and tension of the relationship between his wife and Ashdeep. How dare he fall to the ground upon learning his daughter was dead and have to be supported by relatives. The same relatives that failed Ashdeep even though she had shared how frightened she was and how bad the circumstances between Pardas and the 9 year old had become.

My heart breaks for the mother a world away that thought sending her daughter to live with her father would open many opportunities that her child had no hope of obtaining by remaining with her.

Yep, my glow was pathetically fleeting. :pout:

http://abc7ny.com/news/stepmother-charged-in-death-of-9-year-old-girl-in-queens/1477114/

A 55-year-old woman is charged with murder in the death of her 9-year-old stepdaughter, ahd her ex-husband also faces charges in the case.

Police arrested Shamdai Arjun on second-degree murder charges after she was questioned about the death of Ashdeep Kaur.

She faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted.

Her ex-husband, 65-year-old Raymond Narayan, is being held on charges of obstructing governmental administration.

A tearful Arjun was escorted by police officers Saturday while wearing a white Tyvek suit and handcuffs as she left the 102nd Precinct.

The clothes she wore when police found her are now part of evidence. The woman had nothing to say as she headed to see a judge.

Shamdai Arjun charged with murdering her 9 year-old stepdaughter in Richmond Hill. Girl was strangled, found in tub.

Ashdeep Kaur was strangled, authorities say, and was found dead in a bathtub.

"This is a horrifying case of a child, a defenseless nine-year-old, who was left in the care of her stepmother who allegedly strangled her to death," said Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.

Brown said Arjun was observed by an eyewitness leaving along with Narayan and her two grandchildren ages 3 and 5 on Friday evening and was asked about the nine-year-old victim's whereabouts.

She allegedly informed the eyewitness that the child was in the bathroom and was waiting for her father to pick her up.

The eyewitness, who observed that the bathroom light had been on since 11:00 am, called the victim's father and was instructed to break open the bathroom door at which time she observed the victim in the bathtub, Brown said.

According to prosecutors, NYPD detectives responded to the residence of Raymond Narayan and observed both defendants and the two grandchildren inside the apartment.

The defendant refused to come out and refused to allow entry for over one hour, Brown said. Narayan later opened the door and both defendants were apprehended.

The arrest came as no surprise to relatives of Kaur.

"The stepmom did whatever thing - because she always tell me that she sometimes beat her up, you know," said the victim's uncle, Dharminder Singh.

It was around 6 p.m. Friday when a neighbor tried to use a shared bathroom in the multi-family home on 112th Street in Richmond Hill, but the door was locked and it was strangely quiet. It was quiet, because behind that door was a gruesome scene. Inside was a bathtub with no water in it, and Kaur's lifeless body.

The girl's grief-stricken father appeared overwhelmed as he left the precinct on Saturday, neediong help just to make it to his car.

Malkit Singh, Kaur's uncle says this was not the dream she came to America to chase. The shattered dream, is now the family's nightmare.

"She just come from India three, four months ago. After maybe six, seven years, after she didn't see he father, she comes for three months here, and she's finish," he said.

The Medical Examiner still needs to determine the exact cause of death, but the question on everyone's mind is what could have led her stepmother to kill her in such a violent manner.

They all knew she was beating up on this poor child and did jack all!

Why would a 35 year old man, marry a 55 year old woman and live in such tight quarters? I am guessing it was a green card situation instead of the usual gold digging.

Get ready to hate the dear old daddy as much as the step-monster...

First let's remember how horrified dad was to learn of his daughter's murder-

See, that's him up there^^^ laying on the ground, so completely shocked that he passed right out!
Because how could he have predicted that his wife would do something so horrible to his precious daughter?
Maybe because she told him she would?

Stepmother repeatedly threatened to kill 9yo victim; told girl's father of her intentions
...
“This defendant repeatedly and on numerous occasions threatened to kill the victim,” said Curtis, adding the most recent threat was made just three days before the girl died.

“On Friday, she made good on this threat,”...

Arjun even admitted her intention to her husband — Ashdeep’s father — Sukhjinder Singh, according to the criminal complaint.

“As recently as Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2016, the defendant told the (girl’s father) that she would kill the victim, Ashdeep Kaur,” the complaint said.

“The circumstantial evidence in this case is overwhelming,”
Curtis told Judge Gerald Leibovitz. “And it shows that this defendant murdered her 9-year-old stepdaughter.”

Despite the evidence Curtis cited, Arjun’s lawyer appeared unfazed.

She denied ever hurting the child,” Judah Maltz said. “There’s no confession. No one saw her. (The prosecution is) assuming she may have done this, but they have no proof.”

Maltz requested Arjun be placed in protective custody.
...

:punch::punch::punch:

Here's a link to the actual criminal complaint

From the complaint: DEPONENT FURTHER STATES THAT HE OBSERVED SCRATCHES ON THE DEFENDANT'S NECK AND BRUISING ON THE DEFENDANT'S LEFT ARM.

Little girl attempted to fight back:(

This poor little girl suffering and afraid in a new country that should have provided her with opportunities to achieve her dreams. So terribly sad. I can't imagine her poor mother over in India right now...and the guilt she is feeling for allowing her to come here. The father bears responsibility also. I believe he thought her threats were just words. Despite that...he never should have left his daughter alone with this woman. I hope this monster gets the death penalty...although I doubt she will. RIP Ashdeep. My heart hurts for you.

Stepmom accused of strangling girl, JEALOUS of dad's bond

Shamdai Arjun, 55, was envious of the bond her husband had developed with his daughter, Ashdeep Kaur, in the three months since she came to America from India...

The wicked Queens woman...was jealous that the girl and her dad spoke to each other in Punjabi, when she only knew English, police sources said.

The girl told her father, Sukhjinder Singh, that Arjun wouldn’t feed her and had slapped her, sources said.

Just three days before Ashdeep’s death, Arjun went so far as to tell the girl’s father that she'd kill her, officials said

A Queens woman found guilty last month in the 2016 strangulation murder of her young stepdaughter in the family’s bathtub has been sentenced to up to life in prison, the Queens District Attorney’s Office announced Monday.

Shamdai Arjun, 58, was sentenced Monday to 22 years to life in prison for the “heartless murder,” Queens District Attorney John M. Ryan announced.

Ashdeep Kaur’s body was found in a bathtub by a neighbor in August 2016. Shamdai Arjun, 55, was found guilty of second-degree murder May 10 by a jury that deliberated for less than an hour.

She should have to serve every minute of it, too. I sort of like the idea of her having to come to the parole hearing year after year after year and never getting it.
