Liette Martinez

IN — The family of a New Mexico State University student found stabbed to death Friday morning in an Indiana dorm room where she was staying as part of an exchange program is in shock.

Liette Nicole Martinez, 22, bled to death after being stabbed several times. She was declared dead by paramedics upon their arrival, after she was discovered by a roommate.

Police arrested Tina Loraine Morris, 36, and charged her with murder and auto theft charges.

Police have not commented on a motive or said anything about what may have led up to the stabbing.

Mother Geraldine Martinez said she has not been given a lot of details, but she and her husband Gabriel have a lot of questions.

She said her daughter had never mentioned Morris, who is the mother of one her daughter's three roommates or that she was having trouble with anyone.

Martinez, who was known to her friends as "Lola," blogged about her life on her myspace.com account about being homesick, her future and school.

Since Friday, friends have posted messages on her myspace.com about how much they miss her and of their loss.

On the account, Martinez described how she'd like to die.

"In a really cool tragic way as long as I don't take anyone down with me."

Tina L. Morris, 36, of Fort Wayne, told detectives she stabbed the 22-year-old, known as “Lola,â€￾ threw a pan of hot water at her, hit her in the face with the pan, then stabbed her again after they argued Friday over how Martinez talked to Morris’ daughter the night before, according to an Allen Superior Court probable-cause affidavit .

She has also been convicted of setting fires in an apartment complex. Allegations in Fort Wayne Police Department reports also accused her of molesting a relative, stealing from a relative and refusing to give her ex-husband access to his children, but she was never charged with crimes in those instances.

♦One report filed in May 1998 briefly details Morris’ arrest for starting fires at apartments at 2707 Stardale Drive. She was eventually convicted of misdemeanor criminal recklessness, according to court records.

♦Eight years later, a high school junior told police Morris molested or tried to molest him twice, according to a police report.

♦In 2000 Morris’ roommate called police because she had become violent during an argument at their apartment. Police arrived to find a shattered glass coffee table, broken bar stools and a smashed cordless phone. Morris wasn’t there, however, and no arrest was made.

♦In 2005 her ex-husband called police complaining he couldn’t get his children back after letting them stay with Morris while he was in jail. The responding officer could not find the address, according to a police report.

♦In 2007 a woman accused her of stealing checks and a credit card. The woman also said her home had been set on fire a month earlier, and she suspected Morris, who was not charged or arrested.

According to Tennessee records, Morris was convicted of theft of $500-$1,000 there and sentenced to probation in the mid-1990s.

Before Friday, Morris had lived for about two weeks with her daughter and Martinez in Building H of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne’s Waterfield student housing.

Morris told detectives she saw a knife on Martinez’s desk and grabbed it as Martinez made a reach for it, according to the affidavit. After stabbing Martinez, Morris said she took her car and drove from campus.

Video surveillance shows Morris’ daughter leaving at 10:02 a.m. that day, leaving Morris and Martinez alone. Morris is then seen leaving at 10:25 a.m., according to the affidavit.

One of Martinez’s roommates came home about 11:40 a.m. and saw Martinez covered in blood and unresponsive. . She was pronounced dead at the scene by medics, according to the affidavit.

Update (11 year old update, but still):

Fort Wayne - A woman has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for the stabbing death of her daughter's roommate in her college dormitory room in Fort Wayne.

A judge on Friday gave 36-year-old Tina L. Morris the maximum prison sentence allowed under the agreement in which she pleaded guilty to a murder charge.

Morris admitted last month that she stabbed 22-year-old Liette Martinez of Las Cruces, N.M., inside her dorm room at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne on April 18.

Martinez was an exchange student from New Mexico State University.

Morris had been staying in the dorm with her daughter, who was Martinez's roommate, during the two weeks leading up to the killing.

Authorities say the stabbing happened after Morris confronted Martinez about an argument between the roommates.

Tina Morris is chillin her heels at Rockville Correctional Facility in Indiana. She's 47 and only has another 49 year's to go, ≈20 years with good behavior (depending on how Indiana does it parole calculation).

Part of the university and college experience is letting your kids go off to be on their own to learn how to become adults. Interfering in their lives while at school just doesn't cut it and is counter productive.
