As a collector of many things (post cards of insane asylums, books, pipes, etc) I realize that this stuff did have an monetary and maybe sentimental value to this guy, but at the same time I feel for the dad who saw how all this stuff was negatively affecting his son. This is kind of a lose/lose/looser situation.

While some have a yarn stash, I have a crochet thread stash and boxes of vintage crochet books. I work slowly because my hands hurt. There will be boxes of thread when I die. Someone will dump my stash at a thrift store. And someone like me will chance upon it "wow, all this DMC Cordonnet thread for 25 cents a ball. Cool! Here is some linen priced the same, these idiots don't know pure gold when they see it!" and that person will buy the lot and the stash cycle will continue.

I also do some thread crochet. My favorite brand of thread is DMC Petra. Sounds like you like the super fine. I was also having hand pain, but when I switched to a crochet hook with a different shape of handle, it stopped. I like the flat bamboo handle with a steel hook. Have you tried those?

I know what you mean about thrifting finds. But at least our beloved stashes will end up in a good home when we are gone.

Yes, I like the flat handle bamboo best. I buy the cheap sets on ebay. They are great! I haven't tried Petra because I'm sticking to my pledge.. Mostly I use size 20 or 10 for doilies and size 30 for edgings.
I use DMC Cebelia, Cordonnet, and Baroque. Also Olympus from Japan, and Coats. The linen thread is from Lithuania. Even the best quality thread is not that expensive.
And I just remembered - I scored a box of tatting thread a while back.. Size 70. I can barely see it. Lovely ombre colors.

My dad had a large collection of old National Geographic and American Heritage magazines that he lugged around through our every move. In my pre internet childhood, it made for great reading.

My mom finally put her foot down when they retired.

Ok, I did technically have a porn collection when most porn was on DVD. I certainly wasn't going to try to convince anyone it was worth thousands or make myself the designated national creep by suing someone if it got lost. Honestly, most of it was BDSM content and I would have just felt awful for whoever found it.

You too?
