An Amber Alert has been issued for a 5-year-old girl from northern New Mexico.

According to New Mexico State Police, Renezme Calzada was last seen Sunday in Rio Arriba County.

Renezme is four feet tall and weighs 35 pounds. Photos released by authorities show her with long, dark hair and brown eyes.

She was wearing blue shorts with stars and a Disney Frozen shirt, authorities said.

The Rio Arriba County Sheriff's Office said it has "urgent concern" for the girl -- but did not release additional information about the search, saying many details remain unknown.

Authorities announced they found 5-year-old Renezmae Calzada's body Wednesday.

Frank Fisher, spokesperson for the FBI, said Renezmae's body was found in the Rio Grande in Española around noon. Her body has been sent the Office of the Medical Investigator to determine how she died.
Renezmae was the subject of an Amber Alert, which was issued Sunday night.

The FBI said Renezmae was not reported missing for nearly 10 hours.

It's not clear if any charges are pending or if authorities have a suspect. Previously, law enforcement said they arrested a person who may have been connected to the girl's disappearance, but that person had not been charged in the case.

"I can assure you this investigation has not stopped," said James Langenber, who is with the FBI's Albuquerque Division. "We’ll continue to work until we can identify the responsible party for Renezmae.”

Langenber added that they have conducted between 175-200 interviews regarding Renezmae's disappearance.

Stepdad was taken in for questioning (I'm guessing he was.is the person of interest??)

Stepfather Detained For Questioning

KRQE News 13 is also learning more about Renezmae’s stepfather, Malcolm Torres, who was taken into custody for questioning.

Torres is essentially the girl’s stepdad. He’s not married to her mom, but they have a young son together.

Just last month, Renezmae’s mom filed for child support from Torres for their toddler son, but investigators aren’t saying if they were together Sunday.

Investigators have not said if Torres was at the house Sunday at all, but KRQE News 13 has learned the home where Renezmae was last seen is Torres’ family’s home.

Last October, Torres was arrested at the home he shared with the girl’s mom, Victoria Maestas, their young son, and Renezmae on Arch Lane in Española. Victoria had marks on her neck and face and a split lip.

She said Torres attacked her in the middle of the night after accusing her of cheating. The case was dismissed for some reason. Technically, he’s behind bars now for failing to pay fines on two of his three DWI convictions and failure to meet with a probation officer.

Torres’ latest DWI conviction stems from an Albuquerque case featured on KRQE News 13 last year. In that case, Torres was yanked out of a car on Central outside of Presbyterian Hospital by a Good Samaritan who saw him driving drunk.

On his Facebook page, Torres says he works at the Nambe warehouse in Española. The company, which makes housewares, says it fired him because of his lackluster work ethic.

An arrest has been made in the death of an Española girl whose body was found in the Rio Grande last month. It comes just hours after he was released from jail for another case.

The FBI arrested Malcolm Torres on Sunday in Pojoaque and charged him with second-degree murder in the death of Renezmae Calzada.

Rio Arriba deputies say Torres was the last person to see the five-year-old in his front yard before she disappeared on September 8. Torres was the boyfriend of the girl’s mother, Victoria Maestas.

On the same night she was reported missing, Torres was arrested in a separate case for violating conditions for two DWI charges. He was also questioned about the girl’s whereabouts.

It’s taken the FBI more than a month to charge someone in her death. Last month, Special Agent James Langenberg described the search for the suspect.

“We will not stop until we can identify the responsible party for Renezmae,” said Agent Langenberg.
Torres was just released from MDC earlier Sunday in his other cases. The jail said he was let out early because the court awarded him good time served.

The trial for Malcolm Torres accused of killing his 5-year-old stepdaughter is being delayed again.

Renezmae Calzada’s body was found in the Rio Grande near Espanola in September. According to court documents, both sides are seeking a delay saying they’re still waiting for the final autopsy report and forensic analysis of the evidence.

Alexander M.M. Uballez, United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico, and Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office, announced today that Malcom Torres pleaded guilty to second degree murder. Torres, 29, of Española, New Mexico, will remain in custody pending sentencing, which has not been scheduled.
According to the plea agreement and other court records, on Sept. 7, 2019, Torres was home with his five-year-old stepdaughter, identified as Jane Doe, and eighteen-month-old son. Torres was heavily intoxicated and not fit to supervise the children. While in Torres’ care, Jane Doe sustained blunt-force trauma to her head, torso, and extremities. Torres became aware of Jane Doe’s injuries while she was still alive but failed to seek or provide necessary medical care. Torres claims he was too drunk to remember how he injured Jane Doe.
On the afternoon of Sept. 8, 2019, Jane Doe’s grandparents returned to the home and were informed by Torres that Jane Doe had been missing since that morning. Jane Doe’s grandmother immediately alerted Doe’s mother, who contacted law enforcement.
On Sept. 11, 2019, law enforcement located Jane Doe’s body in the Rio Grande River on the Santa Clara Pueblo. The resulting investigation revealed that Torres had driven to the area 5.5 miles from his home and left her body there on Sept. 8. Over the course of interviews with the Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Office and the New Mexico State Police, Torres provided law enforcement with numerous conflicting statements, delaying the recovery of her body, and lengthening the wide-spread and vigorous efforts of law enforcement and the Santa Clara Pueblo community to locate her.

"This conviction demonstrates the continuing commitment of federal, state, local and tribal law enforcement officials to work together to combat violent crime on Native American tribal lands,” said Raul Bujanda, FBI Special Agent in Charge. “The senseless murder of a 5-year-old child is a tragic occurrence, and I’m glad the collaborative effort put forth by all involved agencies has resulted in this conviction. The murder allegation in this complaint reveal an indifference to human life that will not be tolerated."

“As a crimes against children prosecutor myself, and a father of three, the loss of young life strikes at my core,” said U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez. “I mourn with you. While a guilty plea does not bring back the life that was taken, we hope it brings closure to Jane Doe’s family and confidence that justice will find those who harm the most vulnerable.”

Torres faces a minimum of 30 years and up to life in prison. Upon his release from prison, Torres will be subject to five years of supervised release.

Update brought to you by @Babs

There is finally a sense of justice tonight, four years after the horrific death of 5-year-old Renezmae Calzada. She was reported missing near Española in September 2019. Her body was discovered in the Rio Grande just a few days later.

Renezmae’s stepfather, Malcolm Torres, will spend 35 years in federal prison for beating her to death. He admitted to killing her and signed a plea deal earlier this year.
Torres took a plea deal earlier this year and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. In exchange, some lesser charges were dismissed. Documents say he was drunk when he killed Renezmae.

The autopsy detailed numerous injuries covering much of her body, but it says the fatal blow was to her head. The judge mentioned Monday that the charges – as originally indicted – could have been considered for the death penalty.
KOB 4 asked prosecutors why things changed course, but they told us they couldn’t get into those inside conversations and negotiations.
Torres did make a statement Monday. He apologized for killing Renezmae and asked for forgiveness.

Torres will spend the next 35 years in prison. In the federal system, he does have the opportunity to qualify for good time, which could potentially slice off 15% of that sentence.
Once he’s out, he cannot have any contact with children under the age of 18.
