Surveillance video caught a South Carolina church volunteer performing a sex act on a 3-year-old child on Sunday, authorities said.

Jacop Robert Lee Hazlett, 28, a volunteer at NewSpring Church in North Charleston, was charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, South Carolina's WCSC-TV reported. A judge denied bond.

Hazlett was supervising a group of children, ages 3 to 5, in "the Tree House" room, The Post and Courier of Charleston reported.

The volunteer escorted the boy to a restroom in the church and performed oral sex on him before pulling up the 3-year-old's pants, the station reported, citing the affidavit. The act was caught on a camera positioned outside the bathroom, an investigator said.

Suzanne Swift, a church spokeswoman, told the station that there were no cameras inside the bathrooms at the church. The door reportedly could have been open.

A statement from the church said it was made aware of the concern and possibility of Hazlett's "inappropriate interaction with children," according to the station.

Our CBS affiliate WCSC is Charleston said a lawsuit filed Wednesday claimed a church found multiple separate incidents of sexual abuse involving a man and boys in the church's daycare bathroom.

According to WCSC's report, the lawsuit claims NewSpring Church found 14 separate incidents of sexual abuse involving a church volunteer, Jacop Robert Lee Hazlett, 28, after reviewing its security camera footage from the last 90 days.

A 3-year-old boy's parents are suing the church and Hazlett, saying the church failed to properly screen and interview Hazlett before he was brought on, and said they did not enforce their policies in regards to monitoring security footage.

According to WCSC, Hazlett reportedly took photos of the 3-year-old's genitals after following him into the restroom and then sexually abused the boy for three minutes on Sept. 30. On camera, he can be seen keeping a lookout for approaching adults, as well as looking toward the security camera.

The incidents reportedly took place in the restroom for the 3 and 4-year-old child daycare room.

The 3-year-old's parents said in the lawsuit that they had noticed a change in their child's behavior, including him screaming that he didn't want to go to the church or to the daycare.

"We know of 14 victims in 90 days of footage," Josh Slavin, the attorney for the boy's family, said. "There could be countless more victims that we just don't know more about yet."

How could he not be aware of surveillance cameras? Just because he wanted to do these vile things, wouldnt he check? Or is the perversion 1)a desire to be caught or 2) the risk and flaunting?

It means they ran your name and fingerprints through the state/federal database. Works if they've been caught before, not so much if you haven't.

Another point is what good is having the camera's around if no one is watching them. He was careless enough to blow toddlers with the bathroom door open! The could have and should have been the first time he'd done it, not with the 14th kid!

I’m not picking on you in particular but I just want to caution adults against implying that kids are fucked up for life if they’ve been sexually abused—-that can become a self fulfilling prophecy. Kids are resilient. With supportive parents, trauma therapy and protection from further abuse, they can resume their normal lives. They may never forget the abuse, but it doesn’t have to define them. :cat:

Jacop Robert Lee Hazlett, 29, has been found guilty of committing criminal sexual acts on children.

A Dorchester County jury convicted Hazlett of one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor and two counts of first-degree sexual exploitation of minor.

Judge Diane Goodstein sentenced Hazlett to 75 years without parole.

Prosecutors showed surveillance video during the trial of Hazlett leading four preschool-age boys to the church’s bathroom and abusing them there. At one point, Hazlett used his cellphone to record the children and one child tried to push him away, news outlets reported of the court proceedings.

During sentencing, Hazlett told the judge an abusive upbringing and mental illness led him to molest the boys.

Pascoe said, "Today's verdict and sentence ensure that Mr. Hazlett will never prey on our most vulnerable and innocent again, our children.
