White Settlement in the news again!

The trial started Tuesday for a White Settlement man accused of murdering a woman, dismembering her body and dissolving her body parts in a barrel in his backyard, according to Tarrant County court documents.

Kevin Wayne Powell, 50, faces a capital murder charge for the December 2015 death of Kasey Rae Nutter, according to an indictment dated Sept. 28, 2018.

The indictment says it is unclear how Nutter died, and the state's evidence is based on hearsay, according to the defense attorneys. The attorneys say the account of Nutter's death the state will present is not based on witnesses with first-hand knowledge and shouldn't be admissible in court.

The brief states that Nutter went missing in December 2015, and that prior to her disappearance, she'd lived with Powell at a residence in the 8000 block of Downe Drive in White Settlement.

The missing persons report ultimately made it to the desk of a Fort Worth police sergeant whose stepson lived with Powell and knew Nutter. The court documents state the stepson eventually told the sergeant he thought Powell had killed Nutter.

Powell's defense wrote that in an interview with White Settlement police, the sergeant's stepson told investigators that Powell said "he dismembered Nutter's dead body with a table saw in his bedroom, and then dissolved the body parts in a barrel in the backyard."

The stepson also said Powell painted his bedroom walls and ceiling to cover blood spatter, according to the document.

Powell's defense says the account shouldn't be admissible in court.

So, I guess some stranger came in, killed her in his house, and then tried to dispose of the body on his property. Yeah, that makes sense. What kind of freaky twist is it that the WS police sergeant's son lived with the murderer. o_O

Kevin Wayne Powell, is charged with capital murder in connection with her suspected death. Prosecutors allege he killed Nutter in December 2015 in retaliation for an aggravated assault charge filed against him a month earlier.

If convicted, he will be automatically sentenced to life in prison without parole.

She said Nutter, an alcoholic and meth addict, had later planned to work with Powell at his home remodeling business but their relationship turned romantic. She soon moved in to his White Settlement home, where his son and a grandson also resided.

But the relationship later turned abusive, with Powell isolating Nutter and feeding her drugs.

On Nov. 4, 2015, Bangs told jurors, Powell strangled Nutter with a wire and tried to suffocate her with a plastic bag and drown her in a shower, prompting him to be charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

When Nutter didn’t get the pending case dropped, “in retaliation for that, he killed her and disposed of her,” Bangs told jurors.

His defense said by the end of the trial, she anticipates that jurors may not even believe that Nutter is dead.

“You will not even believe, beyond a reasonable doubt, whether Kasey Nutter is alive, or dead, part of human trafficking,” Keene said. “You just don’t know.”
