HeShe Arrested Again: Transgender Cheerleader Kicked Out of Cheer Camp After Reportedly Choking Out Female Teammate

A trans-identified male cheerleader was given a criminal citation and removed from a Texas cheerleading camp after allegedly ‘choking out’ a female team member following comments over his gender identity.

On July 23, a Facebook post went viral in which a trans-identified male cheerleader claimed he had been kicked out of a cheer camp at Ranger College, a community college in Texas, after experiencing an incident of transphobia and racism. Averie Chanel Medlock, born Dmontrey Duval Satchell, posted a lengthy statement accusing cheerleading teammates and the College of discrimination.

“Well guys I’m officially retired as a cheerleader as of last night at 5:30 AM. A girl on the team was being very disrespectful and told me I am a MAN with a PENIS and that [guys] should not be on the team,” Medlock wrote, “I stood up for myself and she called her mom and dad because she was scared because I [stood] up for myself. Her father said ‘she still has testosterone and a penis and I will kill anyone who comes after my daughter.'”

Medlock then goes on to claim he got an assault charge despite not having done anything wrong, and continues on to accuse the team members of being racist. Medlock’s post got over 4,000 reactions on Facebook, and caught the attention of local media.

In an interview with KTAB, Medlock stated there had been a dispute, and that Karleigh Jones, a cheer teammate, then called her family and claimed she had been assaulted, soon after which the police and Jones’ parents showed up.

But the father of the cheerleader Medlock accused of racism and transphobia made his own statement on Facebook, offering a very different story.

In the post, Mike Jones writes: “I ask you what you would have done when receiving a phone call at 1 o’clock in the morning from your daughter stating they had locked themselves in the room with other girls,” asserting that Medlock had strangled his daughter after goading her with a threat.

“At no time did I ever say anything about your race or your gender,” Jones says in address to Medlock, noting that he is pressing for the release of Police body camera footage, and CCTV recordings from the hallway outside of the dorm to demonstrate he and his daughter are telling the truth.

Some clips of videos taken on cellphones have emerged from the night of the incident, one of which demonstrates the female cheerleaders were locked in their room and trying to quell what appeared to be an outraged Medlock.


One begins with a cheerleader saying: “we have nothing against you, Averie,” and asking Medlock to leave but he refuses. Medlock can be heard yelling “why did you call me a man,” and “come outside and man up … watch your back … don’t fuck with me outside of cheer.”

While Medlock claims he did not attempt to strangle Jones, after Police arrived he was given a criminal citation for physical assault, and removed from the premises. Medlock would tell KTAB that he was “only joking” in reference to the physical contact.

All photos of Medlock appear to have been significantly altered, either by the use of extreme filters or what appears to be women’s faces superimposed over his own. A circulating photo from CCTV footage reveals Medlock looks notably different than the photos he utilizes on social media.

According to Medlock’s criminal citation, he will be expected to go to court, but police investigations are reportedly still ongoing into the incident.

I know enough about gender transitioning to know that that is not the motivations of most people who transition or identify outside the binary, and I will not make such an assumption about any given trans/NB person; but there are too many documented and publicly known instances where this and similar situations have happened. Others are easy to look up, including on this very website.) It's a real issue, and the only serious solution would be to live on the "straight and narrow" and be a law-abiding, upstanding citizen. In this day and age, people can identify as any gender they want or use all the co/cos/fae/faer/ze/xim pronouns all they want, or even use bug/bugs/bugself pronouns (I swear I didn't make that last one up!). But dismissing the inherent binary of sex and gender as something frivolous and irrelevant and abolishable is, in my opinion, an ill-advised approach because of how ingrained such a thing is as a basic part of biological life and society.

That’s okay. Everyone can afford to lose ten bucks. I just checked my search history. I’ve never done a search for trans or tranny. (I thought I may have when reading one of the news stories about trans women in sports.) I did learn that there is a trans flag. I didn’t like it. I find the colors too washed out to represent any group.

It’s illegal to use steroids in sports and achieve an unfair advantage. Why should it be legal for physiological men with the advantage of male bodies to unfairly compete in women’s sports? Gender identity is not a physical identity.

As to the subject of child genital mutilation… If we don’t agree that children as young as twelve should not have breasts removed or created chemically or surgically and sex organs mutilated, we’re probably never gonna agree on much of anything.

The father of a Texas teenage cheerleader allegedly attacked by a transgender teammate claims the video of the confrontation posted to social media cuts out the attack on his daughter and was edited to fit the attacker's 'narrative.'

'Can we get the full video not the edited version that fit your narrative!' Mike Jones wrote in a July 26 heated Facebook post. 'As we wait for these investigations to get over, I just wonder when this person will own up to their actions! And stop trying to ruin our lives!'

Averie Chanel Medlock, 25, posted a four-minute video on Facebook after she was kicked off the Ranger College cheerleading camp for allegedly choking out a 17-year-old teammate, only identified by her first name, Karleigh, who she says made transphobic remarks towards her.


The video shows Medlock and her posse hastily confronting a group of girls hiding behind a closed door for the duration of the recording. Jones claims this is only a peak of what really happened.

If the "girls" were together behind a locked door, who are the other "girls"? Can they corroborate either sides' version of events? My friends' daughter had her breasts surgically removed because they feel they are non-binary. They were 20 or 21 at the time of surgery. I have very mixed feelings about this.

On the one hand, this is a very, very smart, capable, mature young person. If they are correct about this being their true identity, and it stays that way their whole life, then I suppose they made a good choice to have the surgery.

On the other hand, if this ends up being just a phase or a cool fad for them, and they end up female, they will have removed their breasts (and no doubt other treatments as well).

@Bipedalprimate: I appreciate your simple yet interesting response. Apologies for my slightly belated response, but I felt it needed thought before I fired away.

Bear in mind that much of the judgement in my previous post was toward our thread's suspect for (attempting to) exploit today's political discourse for solely personal benefit, in an effort to evade responsibility for having committed horrible things against women; to spotlight that Medlock is not the only person doing such things in such a way; and to acknowledge that such is a part of a larger problem. And as I implied previously, people of any demographic, chosen or otherwise, can be exploiters, grifters, and criminals. Just like someone can exploit their workplace by evoking their "personal liberties" and "other commitments" to chronically call off work, leading to a needless chaotic element in the workplace that would not be there without their absences.

It's important to know to not write off someone just because one or two things are off/disagreeable/strange about them, and I hope not to do that myself (unless if their actions and behavior warrant such a thing). Just because I have different convictions or priorities from someone does not inherently justify excluding or negating their existence. But, if someone makes a spectacle out of either their own or someone else's existence because of their actions, I am not the bad guy simply for acknowledging that there is a spectacle, or expressing an opinion thereto.

If someone is trans/NB and came into my life in whatever capacity, I would welcome them just like I would anyone else. I would not assume bad motivations from them upon first meeting. I can do that while simultaneously being deeply concerned about the ideologies and information that is becoming adapted to mainstream sensibilities as well as the behavior and convictions it enables. One thing I will do is to tell them to let me know if they need anything from me as a friend, co-worker, whatever. One thing I will not do is universally, or even at all, introduce myself using my pronouns. That, for me, is redundant and condescending because I am male who is easily discernible as such.

And "treat others as you would have them do to you" is perhaps the greatest social theory ever created, one that did not need to be coined by a sociology professor; it is a Christian principle that is universally applicable, and I am sure that there are other religions that have a similar mantra. Such a theory is applicable to any party who cares to interact with others, including and especially Medlock. Someone who does not want to be hit, slapped, kicked, choked, punched, beaten, assaulted, or otherwise violated will not hit, slap, kick, choke, punch, beat, assault, or otherwise violate another person. Somebody who actively violates the body, safety, or reputation of another person willfully waives their right to not be retaliated against within justified self-defense measures. The fact that our villain allegedly choked a female teammate and harassed several others is disgusting enough, but pair this with Medlock forcing society and community, on multiple fronts, to accommodate both decrepit criminal behavior and polarizing beliefs makes the former cheerleader all the more a personified condescension who, at least as of recent, has only operated out of pure arrogance and spite for others.

When you tell me to "stop wondering about gender", I would love to do that. But a lot of people are also doing so and drawing conclusions that I can describe as befuddling and extreme. One's subjective experience, personal convictions, and definitely self-analysis cannot be taken as universal truth.
