Ruth Anne Maddox, 45, was discovered dead early Nov. 12 in the garage of the condominium she shared with her husband after her co-workers at the Shakopee Valley News reported her missing.

He husband, Charles Anthony "Tony" Maddox, a 43-year-old bartender, confessed to her death before leading police to her body, admitting that he choked her during a fight.

After the murder, he went shopping - as himself - then put women clothes on over his clothes and went to the airport. He left the wife's car there with a note. He then hopped the light rail and a bus that eventually took him back to his car and home.

Much of it caught on camera.

The results of the investigation show the cause of Ruth Anne's death was homicide. The preliminary investigation indicates she died of blunt force head and neck injuries.

The search warrants also show:

Video surveillance at Sears showed a person police believe to be Tony purchased luggage, spackle and a spackle knife. During the transaction, a person believed to be Tony was seen wearing a white baseball hat, a blue denim button-down shirt, blue jeans and tan shoes.

Police learned after processing the crime scene that a sheetrock wall from within the town home had been damaged, presumably by a door that had been kicked or otherwise knocked off the hinges.

Police also reviewed video surveillance from the airport that showed Ruth Anne's car arrive at the main terminal of the general parking area.

Surveillance showed what appeared to be a person wearing female clothing get out of the vehicle, walk to the elevators, and take the elevator to the lowest level past ticketing and arrivals while pulling a small piece of luggage.

The person in the video footage was wearing a tan, three-quarter-length button-down coat, black slacks and a black hat pulled down past the ears and covering the eyebrows.

The person looked up directly at the surveillance camera in the elevator. Police believe the person to be Tony.

The video showed the person walk away from the elevator, but at one point the black slacks pulled up around the area of the cuff and police could see what appeared to be blue jeans under the pants.

Airport police observed the person on surveillance head to an area out of camera range toward a family restroom. The person wearing the women's clothing did not reappear, but a person police believe to be Tony exited the area carrying a small pilot bag and wearing the same clothes he was seen wearing at Sears.

A person police believe to be Tony then walked directly to the light-rail area, where he boarded a train to the Mall of America. He then arrived at the Mall of America, where he was observed boarding a bus to Savage.

During the search on Nov. 12, police and the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension located and seized items, along with a color photo of Tony with the blue/black jacket. The clothes were found in the dryer and master bedroom.

Police also found blood evidence throughout the home.

Ruth Anne's car was not located for several days after her death. But police found her vehicle - and the note saying she was leaving - at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on Nov. 14.

Ruth Anne was reported missing by co-workers on Nov. 11, after she didn't show up for work and her boss received an unusual text message from her cell phone, stating she had a doctor's appointment.

In addition to the text message received by management, a friend of Ruth Anne's also received a text that stated, "I'm not having a good morning." The friend told police he spoke with Ruth Anne daily and it was very unusual not to be able to reach her.

Police also learned Ruth Anne's daughter received two text messages from Charles Maddox after he was served with divorce papers. The text messages stated that he would never allow Ruth Anne to leave him.

When a neighbor left for work on the morning of Nov. 11, she told police both Ruth Anne's and Tony's vehicles were parked in the driveway.

Officers were unable to contact anyone at the town home when they tried to check on Ruth Anne at 4:40 p.m. Nov. 11. At 6:11 p.m., police knocked on the door and Tony answered.

He told police he didn't know where Ruth Anne was. Tony refused to sign a missing persons report on his wife's behalf.

Officers spoke with Tony at his door again at 9:14 p.m. before returning to the home about 3:15 a.m. with a search warrant.

Police found Ruth Anne's body in the garage, wrapped in a tent and a sleeping bag and taped with clear packaging tape.

Tony admitted to police that he killed his wife, according to the search warrants.

Charles Anthony “Tony” Maddox Jr., 48, who was convicted of second-degree murder in June, was sentenced Wednesday in Scott County District Court to 30 years — 20 in prison and another 10 on supervised release.

“You will have the next 20 years. I know where you’re going to be and I know what you’re going to be thinking about,” Abrams told Maddox after pronouncing the sentence.
[...]

In June, a jury convicted Maddox of murdering Ruth Anne, likely by crushing her neck with a door following an argument in the early morning of Nov. 11, 2008. The Prior Lake woman died of blunt force injuries to her head and neck. Her body was found in the couple’s garage the next day.

Maddox claimed self-defense. The couple was in the middle of a divorce at the time of her death.

The sentence is seven months shy of the maximum allowed under state sentencing guidelines.

The county attorney’s office had asked for an upward departure from the guidelines — of up to 40 years — because of the cruelty of the crime, particularly putting Ruth Anne’s body in a garbage can, and because the defendant showed no remorse, Scott County Attorney Pat Ciliberto said Wednesday.

Abrams denied the request, saying that while the murder was brutal, violent and reprehensible, he found no basis for an increased sentence.
[...]

A representative from the county attorney’s office also read a letter from Ruth Anne’s childhood friend, Colleen Hatami of Indiana, who was not present. She called Tony an arrogant, charismatic man who has shown no remorse or sadness over his wife’s death.

“The only thing Tony is sorry for is he got convicted of a crime he undoubtedly committed,” Hatami wrote.

Ruth Anne’s mother shared similar sentiments. “His only remorse is for poor Tony because he got caught,” Lipka said.

Hatami wrote that Maddox had swept Ruth Anne off her feet at a class reunion and within three months she sold her house and moved to Minnesota with him.

As Ruth Anne’s money depleted so did Maddox’s charm, Hatami said. She said Maddox had defrauded other women in the past and taken advantage of his loving family. She feared he may do the same if released on a lighter sentence.

Ruth Anne’s sister, Karen Whitaker spoke of the “web of deceit” Maddox had created through gambling, porn, tax evasion, cheating and ruining Ruth Anne financially. Yet, that wasn’t enough, Whitaker said.

“You purposely and angrily took a precious life — the life of someone I love very much … ” Whitaker said. “All I can hope for is you live a very long life — all of it behind bars.”

You have your facts wrong, he didn’t admit to chocking her nor did the medical examiner find a strangulation was never mentioned at a cause of death. In fact the medical examiner said that Mr Maddox’s description of self defense and they description of how it happened where very plausible as well. I believe had the defense rested at that time and asked for a dismissal based on the state not proving their theory. Instead the defense allowed the defendant to testify. He came across as he loved their 2 dogs so very much and I believe that sent the wrong message to the jury and he wasn’t emotional enough. This horrible incident happened 2 years before the trial even started hearing Pretrial motions even began. How much more emotion can you show after all that time? I can promise you this tore Mr Maddox up from when it happened and feared he wouldn’t be believed do to previous altercation with that police department. Was it stupid what he chose to do after instead of calling 911 absolutely yes. But seeing how they taped his phone conversation with his attorney in his own house. That was just the beginning of screw ups by the police and the investigation. I would of been ok with NOT GUILTY due to SELF DEFENSE & I could of lived with but not liked involuntary manslaughter for this case. Because I know he didn’t plan or wanted her gone. This is self defense or heat of the moment accident.

Seems to me that you're straining at a gnat while swallowing a camel.

You're right; the medical examiner never did say she was strangled to death. Nobody is (or was) saying the ME did say that. What people did say, nine years ago, was that Miss Ruth died of blunt-force injuries to her head and neck. In other words, somebody beat her to death.

maddox apparently never seriously argued that he didn't do it; in fact, his self-defense plea is a tacit admission that he did do it. And if he did kill Miss Ruth, he struck her intending to hurt her. That makes involuntary manslaughter an inappropriate charge. That leaves voluntary manslaughter, second-degree murder, or first-degree murder. The differences are that killing is not intended for a manslaughter conviction while it is for murder; and having time for rational consideration of the consequences of one's actions is the difference between second-degree murder, where that time is not available, and first-degree murder, where it is.

I have no doubt you have been over and over this matter, and have all the pieces arranged just so in your mind. The problem is we don't have access to your mind so we cannot deduce the salience, for instance, of the dogs. Or where you found the accusations of death by strangulation.

Oh goody, I get to dig into a crime from a long dead thread about a shitbag getting justice. Thanks, Jewels!

Let's start off with a past and current pic of said shitbag, Charles Anthony "Tony" Maddox
Instead the defense allowed the defendant to testify.
He was the defense, Jewel. He has the right to allowed myself to testify, everyone has the right to place the noose around their own neck. After reading his testimony, here at this link, btw, this is my favorite part:
[...]

Tony Maddox said his first instinct was to charge his wife in order to get her to drop the knife. He kicked the door shut, but she was standing in the way and went tumbling down the steps, he said.

Unable to see her, Tony Maddox said he took the door, which was hanging off its hinges, and chucked it down the stairs toward her to get a clearer view of her. That's when she moved out from under it, he said, and started to stand up with the knife still in her left hand.

He said she said something about him going to jail or hell, so he charged down the stairs and pushed her backward, so her body landed between the recliner and living room half-wall.

He jumped on her, using his knee to pin down her hand with the knife when her body went limp.

[...]
This is no fucking way I can believe this bullshit. So, with this fairy tale, along with the prosecution's evidence, I would have found Tony guilty of second degree murder, as well.

Thank you again Jewel, for bringing this fucktard to my attention. I'm now pleased to discover that he is currently in prison.

Why come here now after this thread has been untouched for 8 years? Is he still whining about his innocence and unfair trial? He made statements, even before her death, that incriminated himself and then acted guilty as fuck afterward. What do you think actually happened?
I dont think people reading/lurking realize those threads at the bottom are old. I'm not even sure why they are there. The software has decided in this case, any story with the name Tony is similar.

Holy shit, Jewels, you got it! You did it! The case cracker!

Take this shit to the fucking Governor, NOW!!! Don't waste time with us. I'm sure he'll pardon him out without haste.

he beat her death and apparently tried to strangle her as you just snitch tagged that, he should have gotten the death penalty

Figured I would google this and see if there was anything new on it. I knew Tony, after the fact. I worked with him. My impression of him was that was a humble guy, he didn't share a lot about his personal life and I didn't ask. He worked hard and was always there to help regardless of if it was work related. I would have never guessed his past. I didn't even learn about it until after he was sentenced. A co worker called me one day and said "Tony was arrested, he is in prison" I had to google him to find out what had happened. At first I was in shock, and after reading the articles completely baffled. I thought there had to be some mistake. The Tony I knew was not capable of murder. Even so long after the fact, I have a hard time understanding it. That being said, knowing what I know now, I probably would not have gotten to know him. To quote Professor Slughorn "if there was darkness within it was buried very deep"
