Two-year-old Luca Romero of Colleyville has been around animals his whole life, his mom Allis Cho said.

"He's pretty gentle because we have a German Shepherd at home, so we teach him not to hit the animals, to be gentle with them," she said.

But what happened to Luca last weekend, his mother fears, will have life-long effects on the toddler.
[....]
Luca's family was at Klyde Warren Park in Dallas Saturday at the same time a pet adoption event with Dallas Pets Alive! Cho said they got permission to pet a dog identified by the group as Rusty. They did, then continued walking around, and eventually she and her son returned to Rusty's area.

"He probably only took two or three steps, and then the dog lunged out and bit him in the right arm and chest," Cho said.

Photos of Luca's injuries show how serious the incident was. His mother said fatty tissue was coming out of two puncture wounds.

"It wasn’t just a bite where you just bite and release—it bit him and drug him to the ground would not let him go," Cho said. "Four or five men had to come in and pry the dog off of him."

The dog is now under quarantine and being evaluated at Dallas Animal Services. The family is calling for Rusty to be euthanized.

The toddler has five stitches and a new fear of dogs, Cho said. And though the family doesn't ever want to see dogs be euthanized, they feel in this case, there's no other option.

"We just don’t want anyone else to get hurt in the future," Cho said.

You don't let your small child pet strange dogs, especially dogs already stressed out at an adoption event. People just don't seem to get that!

Rusty needs to go and he will, I'm sure. I'm sorry the little guy got bit. Maybe mama learned something here.

Poor baby got the shit bit out of him, so sad to see this little guy crying like that.

As for Rusty....wtf? U just killer yourself dog! U will get a forever home now!! Dead in the dirt. Rusty, why? The kid is cute!

The mom let a toddler pet a Pitbull that was up for adoption?

I can't shake this out of my head:

Narrator - "Investigators discovered the mother had just last week taken out a $1 million dollar life insurance on the little boy. She was also having an affair with the director of the Pitbull adoption agency. She was hiding a cocaine habit from her husband and was also moonlighting as a stripper"

A Dallas pet rescue thinks a dog deserves a second chance after biting a 2-year-old boy at an adoption event two weeks ago.
[....]
This week, Dallas Animal Services deemed the dog had caused serious injuries and seized it from the rescue.

The rescue group claims the dog had no history of aggression and that the child was unattended and likely spooked the dog. The boy's mother says that’s not true.

Cho says they had asked permission for her son to pet the dog, Rusty, at the adoption event. She says he went to pet other dogs and then came back to Rusty when the dog lunged and bit him.

Dallas Animal Services determined this week that the dog had caused serious bodily injury. It seized Rusty. A judge could now decide whether he goes back to his owner or is euthanized.

On Thursday, Dallas Pets Alive released a statement making a case for Rusty to live.

“While the child had been in the area prior to the incident with his mother, at the time of the incident he had approached Rusty on his own. Rusty was on a leash and in a seated position and had shown no signs of aggression at the event,” the organization said. “This leads us to conclude that when the unattended child approached Rusty, the dog likely reacted in fear.”

Cho says that's wrong.

“When the incident happened, he was literally like two feet away from me,” she said. “And I saw the whole thing go down.”

While the group's statement also said the dog had no history of aggression, when pressed it revealed it only had the animal for a year. The dog is 4 years old.

“We just don't want anyone else to get hurt so we just want to do our part,” she said. “Because if someone does get hurt, then we want to know we did everything we could to stop that.”

Dallas Pets Alive says they did not have anyone available for an on-camera interview with FOX 4 on Thursday.

The rescue group's statement said it would be irresponsible to guess what breed Rusty is without DNA testing and went out of the way to mention the bad rap that pit bulls get.

Despite that, the group’s website once listed Rusty as a lab/pit bull mix. They said they listed a breed without DNA testing in order to make it easier for people to search on its website.

DALLAS - The legal battle over a dog bite case that went all the way to the Texas Supreme Court is finally resolved.
[....]
The rescue group says Rusty has finally been transferred out of Dallas Animal Services to a boarding facility under an agreement that will avoid more costs and litigation for the city.
