A toddler was “hurt pretty bad” after he climbed onto a baggage conveyor belt at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson airport and rode it all the way to the TSA bag room, authorities said.

Edith Vega said she put her son down to print her boarding pass at the Spirit Airlines kiosk on Monday, according to an incident report from the Atlanta Police Department. When she looked away briefly, she told authorities, he disappeared.

He had climbed onto the conveyor belt and was taken back to the TSA bag room, where agents saw him and stopped the belt.

Vega said she was told her son was on the belt for about five minutes.

“He just went a long ride away, I couldn’t even catch up,” Vega told CNN affiliate WSB. “I wanted to jump in and try to go get him, but they didn’t allow me.”

According to the incident report, the toddler had a severely swollen and bruised right hand. The fire department responded to the scene and transported him to the hospital.

“Spirit Airlines is aware of an incident at Hartsfield-Jackson International in which an unattended child passed by a section of our ticket counter that was not staffed or open at the time,” the airline said in a statement.

I know people do not like the "kid leashes" but that would have saved this little one from his own curiosity.
In busy crowded area like this, having a child within eyesight is just not enough.

Harnesses folks, especially in a place like an airport. Honestly I don't know how mom & dad survived without them (lil sis and I were sneaky little fuckers and our attention spans could put dogs to shame)

I used one and will not judge others for doing so. Especially if they have a runner/explorer.

I've used them. Harnesses or leashes are a lot more humane than a lost, injured or dead child. Kids this age don't fear anything, everything is fun to them, you have to protect them however you can. Leashes, harnesses, strollers, or just training the little monkeys to hold onto your pants leg so that you know the second they take off for parts unknown.

Mom just put the fear of God into us from a very young age. She said don't do it and we didn't do it. It wasn't worth the consequence of doing it! She was more likely to trip over one of us that she was of have one of us run off on her... but yeah, leash those bitties up in crazy-busy places like the airport!

I love kid leashes. My youngest was fast so I bought a harness. He hated it I loved it. No more chasing a 2 yo around.

Totally agree with kid leashes/harnesses. They can and do save lives and lost children.
