South Carolina dad accused of killing his 5 kids served prison time for 2001 crime spree: report
In 2001, Timothy Ray Jones Jr. was sentenced to six years in prison for a spree that included a stolen car and forged checks. Police say they believe he murdered his five children — ages 1 to 8 — in South Carolina earlier this month and then drove their bodies to Alabama.

I just have to say that this man was totally overwhelmed with responsibility which he appears to have embraced. I believe he had a complete mental breakdown from the stress of taking care of 5 kids with little to no help at home except for babysitters when he worked. He held down a full time job. Five kids can destroy a house in no time! With babies and three older kids...the laundry alone would be daunting...preparing all the meals...omg the dishes...baths....everyone says kids were always clean.

I have a close relationship with a 52 yr old man...he is a single parent of five...the youngest three being 5,7 and 18. He works over 60 hours a week. Barely sleeps...he naps here and there...his 7 yr old son is special needs....autistic and requires a lot of supervision. His life is crazy. He drives his 5 yr old to school every day and picks her up....cuz that's their alone time. He is the best dad I know and struggles like this man did every day. He looks so terribly worn out and tired all the time but is a positive person determined that his kids are going to grow up loved. I fear he will have a major medical issue before long because of his age and the physical stress and lack of sleep for so many years. He has had custody of the two youngest since they were babies. Their moms are not in their lives at all so the kids don't go for visitation to give him a break.

I can't imagine the stress of having FIVE.....when I see what having three at home...has done to this man. Plus we can't hardly find time together lol. Stolen moments. Just wanted to share my thoughts.

I'm a single parent of three kids. When I started losing my mind I sent one to live with her father, not murder her. This man has family, maybe not in the area, but still. He was very active in his church. He had neighbors, friends, coworkers. The children have a mother and she probably has family. He had options. Hell, I'd have helped him as overwhelmed as i am sometimes, and he lived right up the road so I could have. I don't agree @mybum62. He's evil.

OMG I wasn't negating what this father did. He did have options. He chose to kill his children. He deserves to die. I was just sharing my thoughts about the level of responsibility he had which could lead to a mental breakdown. He is still responsible for his actions. He is evil. Something sent him over the edge.

I know but I'm thinking there is more to this story than just being overwhelmed. It's not rational for a normal person to have a mental breakdown and do this. This man was highly intelligent(most narcissistic people are), history of domestic violence, past drug use and criminal behavior, history of neglect and abuse complaints. He was crazy.

Rumor has it, he strangled them with a belt and it has been confirmed they were killed in the home, most likely on the evening of the 28th:( The kids were not in school on the 29th. With it being a long weekend due to labor day, nobody became too concerned when until Tuesday when they didn't return. He also had plans to visit his parents in Mississippi but never showed up. I was hoping he drugged them or sat them in the car and let the carbon monoxide kill them, but when I heard there was blood in his vehicle I knew better. I guess we will have to wait until they release the autopsies to find out what really happened.

neither of them sound very stable
Im sorry her kids are dead but she moved in that trailer with hubby an kids
shortly afterwards according to neighbors
she move out and in with a neighbor and they had joint custody
Joint custody is great if your going to put aside your differences and make the kids number 1
sounds to me like he had not only drug issues but mental ones also
I think both parents failed these kids
she was wrapped up in the newest man in her life and he was wrapped up in doing his drugs
kids went dirty according to neighbors and drinking from neighbors hoses etc

Joint custody just means they made medical and educational decisions together. He had primary custody and she had visitation every other weekend. I know very well from having been divorced in the same county and knowing countless other people who have too, that he was given primary BC she had no way to support the kids. She should have gotten a damn job instead of fucking the neighbor boy. I strongly believe the judge made his decision based on the best interests of the children and DSS did everything they were supposed to and a lot of people around here are blaming both. They can only go by what information they have, although I understand people want answers and someone to blame or figure out why. The courts here also do not take domestic violence seriously at all. We have the highest murder rate from it in the country. I know from personal experience, again in the same county, that a judge will not use that as a basis for a custody decision if you go back to the abuser. Had she gone and left him, gotten help from sistercare (our local domestic violence agency) they would have helped her with an attorney (BTW it's also impossible to do anything in family
Court here without one), and gotten a job things would have played out differently. Then again he may have just killed them during his visitation time if that happened, so I don't fault the mother much at all.

I could be wrong....but I FEEL when a parent does the unthinkable and kills a child in a "violent" manner (strangulation, blood) it's less calculated than if they do it by pills or carbon monoxide. I don't know. It seems MORE unhinged, if you know what I mean.

I read somewhere - can't find it now - that he told police they were plotting to kill him. If that's true it was the drugs.

I've been thinking about this...My theory is this...dad was afraid that with CPS involved ONCE AGAIN...he was fearful they would take the kids away...he believed his ex and her new younger boyfriend would get custody then...and he was not going to allow that...so the best way to prevent kids from being taken by the state and to hurt her...the ex...was to kill the kids so she could not have them.

My vote is drugs. Specifically spice. When reality hits, he drives around for a few days, has family in Al and Ga, heads that way, and does more drugs trying to figure out what to do next.

I'm not familiar with some drugs...like spice...and the effects they have on people. My only knowledge really is weed and it doesn't affect people for days at a time and keep people in a drugged stupor. What is spice and what does it do to someone?

Spice is a type of synthetic weed, so it is chemically made. It's marketed as being safer than pot, however a user has absolutely no way of knowing what's in it, and usually comes with a label saying 'not intended for human consumption'. Because it's legal and not regulated, ppl cut it with crazy things.
It has been known to cause anxiety, paranoia and hallucinations. From what I've heard, here in the Midwest, bath salts are involved in many batches to bulk it up.
Sounds like pretty scary stuff. He still had some on him when they found him.
IMO, everything looking perfectly fine with all the kids, then overnight something happens and he has a drug history? That makes think it wasn't a mental/emotional breakdown thing.

I'm not 100% sure there was police involvement that day at Walmart. I think this was reported by him after he was arrested. No other article says there was, but I guess we will find out for sure soon enough.

They should have.

They are saying it happened that day. The Walmart they are referring to is less than three minutes from his house. He ordered them to the back of the vehicle, probably went home, and killed them. I would hope that if someone saw this, they would have reported it. Not sure what good it would have done tho considering the police take forever to arrive when contacted and despite there being a sheriff dept sub station directly across the street, there is never ever an officer there.

His lawyer asked not to seek the death penalty but the judge denied it.
That's not a decision that his lawyer has any say in. The seeking of the death penalty is completely up to the prosecution, the defense has no part of that dicussion. Because if the defense could have a say in that then no one would ever get sentenced to death because their lawyers would always asked for the death penalty to be taken off the table.

I wasn't saying that you mis-read anything, I was simply pointing out that the death penalty is a decision that the prosecution makes not the defense.

I have been thinking about this case the last few days. Not a ton of information. He waived his court appearance. His lawyer asked not to seek the death penalty but the judge denied it. He's supposed to be in court again tomorrow, November 13th, my birthday no less. I still can't find any real details on why or how. Was he crazy? Was he on drugs? Was he killing them out of spite? This is one of those cases that will drive me insane forever.

They say something on the local news every now and again, but nothing important. They have a gag order in place so we won't hear much until after the trial.

There are stories I don't comment on but keep up with regardless becoz sometimes what can you say other than what's already been said. I got the feels man. My heart hurts and my brain can't process how someone could murder their babies in coldblood like this?
I don't think anything they do to him will be as bad as what he did to his own kids. Beat him, kill him, set him on fire. It still won't be as bad as what he did. There is just some evil you can't be rid of.

Prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty against a South Carolina man charged with murdering his five children last year before driving their bodies across several states and dumping them in Alabama, according to local media reports.

Timothy Ray Jones Jr. faces murder charges in the September 2014 killings of his children, ages 1 though 8.

On Wednesday, Eleventh Circuit Solicitor Donald Myers in Lexington County, South Carolina, told a judge he planned to seek the death sentence again Jones, 33, according to a report in The State newspaper in Columbia, South Carolina.

The judge ordered a psychiatric evaluation of Jones at the request of prosecutors, the paper reported.

Neither Jones' public defender nor court officials could be reached for comment late Wednesday.
[...]
Jones, who worked for Intel Corp in Columbia, had joint legal custody of the children. The children's mother, his ex-wife Amber Jones, reported them missing on Sept. 3.

Detectives believe Jones killed his children about a week earlier after picking them up from school and day care, the Lexington County Sheriff's Department said.

One of them was beaten and the other four strangled, authorities have said.

While it's easy to blame public servants, the case file actually vindicates the SS case workers.
The fact that the father went off the deep end is obvious.
My vote is drugs. Specifically spice. When reality hits, he drives around for a few days, has family in Al and Ga, heads that way, and does more drugs trying to figure out what to do next.
This is why humanity has found a bottomless well of hatred and anger. Chemically enhanced insanity.
