JUPITER — When Thomas Sutton called 911 after shooting a woman, he claimed it was an accident, police said Sunday.

Sutton, 26, told dispatchers he was trying to teach Brittany Armstrong, 18, gun safety and didn't realize the weapon was loaded, officer Kelly Sanders said.

Paramedics flew Armstrong from Sutton's apartment on Thelma Avenue to St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, where she died Friday morning.

Armstrong and Sutton knew each other from working at the local Chili's restaurant. Sutton told Armstrong, who wanted to be a police officer, that he had been one in another state, former boyfriend Jonathan Gates said.

No employment information could be found to verify that Sutton worked in law enforcement, and Sanders said police could not verify it.

Sutton was arrested on manslaughter charges and denied bail at the Palm Beach County Jail.
