A South Florida father chased down a carjacker for five miles and shot him after the stranger took off in his car with his six-year-old son still inside.
The carjacking took place early Saturday morning when the father left his 2012 Honda running in front of a West Palm Beach home as he said goodbye to friends at around 2.30am.
Lamar Thurman, 29, then jumped into the open car and took off, with the child still sitting in the back seat.
The theft caused the panic-stricken father to call police and drive after his car with friends.
Sheriff’s officials and the father followed Thurman for five miles until he crashed.
The father and his friends then tried to free the boy from the vehicle, but Thurman started the car again and began to drive away.
That’s when the father pulled a gun and began firing repeatedly, hitting Thurman multiple times 'in an attempt to stop him from fleeing further with his child in the car,' Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Teri Barbera.
Thurman then crashed again.
He was taken to the hospital in critical condition and will face criminal charges if he survives.
The boy was not injured in the attack.
This wasn’t Thurman’s first car theft.
He was released from prison on February 4 after serving three years behind bars for carjacking, robbery and aggravated battery of an elderly person after he tried to steal an 86-year-old woman’s vehicle in 2016, according to the Palm Beach Post
He’s on probation until 2022, according to state records.
