Judge rules to release secret indictment in JonBenet Ramsey killing
BOULDER, Colo. — A judge ruled in favor Thursday of releasing a secret indictment of the parents in the JonBenet Ramsey case.
The decision in favor of the plaintiffs means there will be a second hearing where the Boulder District Attorney’s Office must show a compelling reason that the documents should not be released to the public.
“This is a complicated legal issue,” District Attorney Stan Garnett said in a statement. “My office is reviewing the court’s ruling very carefully and will make a determination how to respond by middle of next week.”
Daily Camera reporter Charlie Brennan and the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press are seeking the release of the grand jury’s 1999 indictment of John Ramsey and Patsy Ramsey on charges of child abuse resulting in the death of 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey.
That indictment was never actually prosecuted. It emerged earlier this year that the grand jury voted to indict the slain child’s parents, but that then-District Attorney Alex Hunter refused to sign the document and prosecute the Ramseys.

Some documents in the JonBenet Ramsey case will be unsealed on Friday despite the objections of her father.
A judge in Colorado on Wednesday ordered the release of 18 pages that were sealed after a grand jury went home in 1999 without charges being filed.
In January, the Boulder Daily Camera, citing unidentified jurors as well as an assistant district attorney, said the grand jury had actually voted to indict JonBenet's parents on charges of child abuse resulting in death, but the district attorney decided not to move forward with the case.
"We do not have sufficient evidence to warrant the filing of charges," then-Boulder County District Attorney Alex Hunter said in 1999. He did not sign the indictment, according to the Daily Camera.
There will be nine pages on John Ramsey and nine pages on Patsy Ramsey released this week, according to the order from Judge J. Robert Lowenbach.
The Daily Camera reported Wednesday the release was a response to a lawsuit by one of its reporters and the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press seeking the unprosecuted indictment.
In 2008, then-District Attorney Mary Lacy wrote a letter to Ramsey, saying that new DNA evidence had cleared him, his wife and son.
I for one am excited to read it, regardless of whether they were cleared through DNA or not!

I still can't get over parents who dress their little kids up to look like mini adults. I just don't fucking get it. I know that a kid doesn't have to have make up on to get a pedo going but why in the world would you sexualize a fucking CHILD? I don't even like bikinis on 10 yr olds. I have watched a couple episodes of Toddlers and Tiaras and it seems to me the parents of these kids are usually fat and ugly and are pretty much just trying to profit (either financially or emotionally) off their kids cuteness. Sorry if I am rambling, just looking at her cute little face gets me all upset.

I agree with you. Its like the parents are trying to profit and/or trying to live vicariously through them, with the kid receiving compliments on their looks and such.

i think the guy who killed himself seems likely, and also maybe the Wolf guy. But couldn't they just dig up the dead guy and get his DNA?

http://www.examiner.com/article/if-not-patsy-ramsey-then-who-the-suspects-jonbenet-s-death

The Ramseys' book "The Death Of Innocence" names five people who they believe should be further investigated, including Wolf.
According to Carnes, Wolf was identified as a possible suspect by Detective Lou Smit, who said there were too many "unanswered questions" about him.
In August 1997, Wolf's then-girlfriend, Jacqueline Dilson, told Patsy Ramsey's sister, Pam Paugh, that she believed Wolf was involved in JonBenet's murder.
According to the Ramseys' book, Dilson had reported to the police that Wolf had disappeared on Christmas Day and returned at 5:30 a.m. the next day. Dilson said he took a shower and went to sleep.
The next day, Dilson claims, Wolf watched the television report of JonBenet's death and became angry, claiming that he believed JonBenet had been sexually abused by her father.
Dilson told Paugh and police that Wolf hated big business and once had a sweatshirt with the initials SBTC on it, which stood for the Santa Barbara Tennis Club. SBTC was the signature at the end of the ransom note.
Police never publicly named Wolf or other people named in the Ramseys' book as suspects.
Carnes notes in her ruling that one man named in the Ramseys' book, Michael Helgoth, committed suicide two months after the murder and one day after District Attorney Alex Hunter announced they were narrowing the search for JonBenet's killer.
A stun gun was found near Mr. Helgoth's body, as well as "HI-TEC" boots. Evidence in the case suggests that JonBenet's killer used a stun gun on her. Unidentified shoeprints from HI-TEC boots also were found in the Ramseys' basement.
Another possible suspect is Gary Olivia, a transient with a history of child molestation, who was seen in the Boulder area in December 1996. Carnes wrote that Olivia picked up his mail one block from the Ramsey home and was present at JonBenet's memorial service.
The Ramseys also identified Bill McReynolds as someone who should be investigated.
McReynolds, a former University of Colorado journalism professor, portrayed Santa Claus at the Ramseys' home for the third consecutive year in 1996 - two nights before the 6-year-old was found slain.
In addition, McReynolds' wife had written a play about a young girl held captive in a basement.
Carnes also noted that McReynolds' daughter had been kidnapped and sexually assaulted 22 years to the day before JonBenet's death. A card written to JonBenet from McReynolds was found in her trash can after the murder.
McReynolds died at the age of 72 in 2002. Police said they never considered him a serious suspect.

It's been a while since I read about this case but I never thought it was Patsy. I'd be "unstable" too if someone murdered my daughter. There were a lot of keys handed out to that house, construction workers, etc. Possibly the guy that committed suicide? Don't know, just always thought someone outside of the family.

The thing about beauty pageants I don't hold against mom. All little girls want to be beauty queens and every mother thinks their child is the most beautiful and talented. My daughter wanted to do it and I just couldn't afford all the stuff that went with it. My sister let her daughter do it. I think it's silly to judge anyone by looks but I must be in the minority because there's an awful lot of pageants out there. And an awful lot of judging.

I don't think all little girls want to be in pageants. I have always HATED being dressed up, my grandmother will attest to that, she struggled every single week to get me in a dress for church. I agree with all those who have said that they hate pageants. If you're grown or in your teens at least then go for it but little girls? Nope. These girls are loaded with make-up, fake hair, clip-on teeth, spray tans, and thousands of dollars worth of clothes. What exactly does that have to do with beauty? Little girls are beautiful for their sweet smiles, cute pigtails, etc, not pounds of make-up and hair extensions. A lot of times the mothers are either hambeast or look like they have been ridden hard and put away wet one too many times and are living vicariously through their daughters and to me it's sick!

All valid points, especially your statement about the numerous keys being handed out. I believe that Patsy wrote the ransom note,if an outside killer , why write the note? It's a shame that we might never truly know what happened that night and JonBenet will never have justice

KUSA - Burke Ramsey filed a $750 million lawsuit Wednesday against CBS, a production company and seven investigators involved in a TV special that aired in September and accused him of killing his younger sister, JonBenet Ramsey, in Boulder in 1996.

The filing of the defamation suit, a copy of which was obtained by 9Wants to Know, came two days after the 20th anniversary of the murder of the 6-year-old, a case that has captivated people for two decades and still remains unsolved.

The show in question, “The Case Of: JonBenet Ramsey,” aired Sept. 18 and 19. It included an elaborate recreation of the Ramsey home and a detailed look at evidence in the case by investigators with extensive law enforcement backgrounds, all of whom were named in the suit along with CBS Corp. and Critical Content, a production company.

JonBenet Ramsey's brother has settled his $750million defamation case against CBS and others involved with a 2016 documentary about the six-year-old pageant queen's death.

Burke Ramsey's lawsuit, which was filed in December 2016 — just two months after The Case of: JonBenet Ramsey aired on CBS — claimed that the documentary implied that Burke, now 31, killed his sister when he was nine years old.

Such a claim, was 'false and defamatory per se,' according to the lawsuit, which went on to note that 'Burke Ramsey did not kill his sister and had no involvement in her brutal murder.'

A statement was released Friday from a spokesperson for producers of The Case of: JonBenet Ramsey, stating that 'The parties have reached an amicable resolution of their differences and will have no further comment,' according to the Daily Camera.

Burke's lawyer, Lin Wood, told Reuters that, 'the case has been amicably resolved to the satisfaction of all parties.'

He later tweeted: 'After handling many defamation cases for them over the past 20 years, hopefully this is my last defamation case for this fine family.'

Attorneys representing CBS declined to comment to multiple news agencies.

Terms of the agreement are not being made public.

Letters written by convicted paedophile Gary Oliva in jail have been obtained by theDaily Mail, and they reportedly claim the 54-year-old is taking full responsibility for the crime, saying he killed her by accident.

“I never loved anyone like I did JonBenet and yet I let her slip and her head bashed in half and I watched her die,” he allegedly wrote. “It was an accident. Please believe me. She was not like the other kids.”

The child sex offender, who is serving time in a Colorado prison for child porn charges, reportedly goes on to explain how much the she “changed” him in a second letter — revealing her death induced remorse in him.

“JonBenet completely changed me and removed all evil from me,” Oliva claimed. “Just one look at her beautiful face, her glowing beautiful skin, and her divine God-body, I realised I was wrong to kill other kids. Yet by accident she died and it was my fault.”

The sensational letters were sent to music publicist Michael Vail, a former school mate of Oliva’s, who has reportedly suspected his involvement in the crime for years.

The shock admission is one of the biggest breakthroughs in the now infamous case, which has stumped detectives for years.

“My suspicions began when Gary called me late at night on December 26, 1996. He was sobbing and said, ‘I hurt a little girl’,” the 55-year-old told the publication.

The next day he saw a newspaper headline about a ‘slain girl’ in Boulder, Colorado, sparking his long held suspicions around his former friend.

Oliva, who has a history of sexually abusing minors, lived just a few blocks from the Ramseys at the time of the murder.

He was questioned four years after her death after being arrested on unrelated charges, but Boulder police cleared him, the Denver Post reported in 2016 when he was arrested over the discovery of sexually explicit images of children found on an email account he owned.

The report detailed how in 2002, while Oliva was in Boulder jail over a parole violation, he gave a jailhouse interview in which he said he was being “persecuted” over the JonBenet case because of his history of pedophilia.

“JonBenet’s murder touched me very deeply,” Oliva told The Post. “I feel she was an exceptional girl whose death was an exceptional loss. I felt the need to build a monument, a shrine, to remember this little girl.”

He told police this was the reason why he had a photo of JonBenet in his backpack, when arrested on a drug charge in December 2000.
[....]
In 2016, a documentary called The Case of JonBenet Ramsey aired ahead of the 20th anniversary of JonBenet’s death, which ultimately accused Burke — who was nine at the time — of bludgeoning his sister to death.

As a result, Burke launched a $750 million ($A1.05 billion) defamation lawsuit against American TV network CBS which was settled at the start of this year, according to the New York Post.

It was the second lawsuit the 31-year-old filed against the TV network.

Not long after the damning doco aired, Burke went on US talk show Dr Phil to deny any involvement in her death.
[....]
During the three-part show, which aired in September 2016, Burke revealed who he suspected of brutally murdering his little sister, who was strangled and left with a lengthy ransom note.

“I kinda always thought it was a paedophile who saw her in one of the pageants and snuck in (to our house), who knows,” he told Dr Phil.

His suspicions are eerily close to the alleged written confession of Oliva, who theDaily Mail reports are now aware of the development in the case.

In a statement issued to the publication they said they had passed the additional information provided to them onto the relevant investigators.

The statement in full reads: “The Boulder Police Department is aware of and has investigated Mr Oliva's potential involvement in this case.

“We have passed the additional information provided onto investigators. We will not comment on any actions or the status of this investigation.”
